Honorable Mentions: *Keep Your Faith/Throw Your Mask Away - Persona 5 Royal -The instrumental, Keep Your Faith, plays during the final battle against Dr. Maruki and his persona, Azathoth. But then, phase 2 begins. Azathoth evolves into Adam Kadmon and we are treated to Throw Your Mask Away. A song that is basically Maruki begging you not to fight him, asking the Phantom Theives to throw their masks away and accept their new reality where no one has to suffer. It's a song about a man with the best of intentions, but the wrong idea of going about them. *Too Many To Count - Sonic The Hedgehog Series -There are too many Sonic final boss themes to count! Open Your Heart from Sonic Adventure, Live and Learn from Sonic Adventure 2, What I'm Made Of from Sonic Heroes, and many more. *The Great Mighty Poo Song - Conker's Bad Fur Day -A opera song from a giant sh!t monster that sings about throwing his shit at us and shoving us up his butt. Live and Reloaded added a remastered touch but censored the profanity (though there is also an uncensored version)

The orchestral His World against Solaris (06), With Me (SatBK), the orchestral Endless Possibility (Unleashed), Infinite (Forces), Find Your Flame, Break Through It All and Undefeatable all from Frontiers, Sonic has no shortage of bangers among boss themes.

For me, N's theme from Black and White and it's sequel is my pick. The way you meet this guy and have you start it with "why is this guys got his own theme", and you meet him and realize his associate with Team Plasma and that's where you realize, alright time to end this. And by the time you catch either Reshiram or Zekrom, his theme changes and oh lord everything changes, from being a soft into a symphonic Rage and gosh. And by the time the sequel you battle him, he remains his theme from the prequel but seems to be missing a lot, it's just write the important of the character and put it in a song.

I had a feeling It Has To Be This Way would be number 1. But every boss theme in MGR? That rocks so hard! Nice to see Dedede and Sephiroth's themes here too. Far too many Sonic themes to mention. If all the monsters in MH are bosses, one that hits harder than others would be Fatalis. Cynthia's theme in Pokèmon Gen IV does hit hard but I understand mentioning Ghetsis in Gen V. The last one is Throw Away Your Mask from P5R. The final theme for the probably the best final boss in the series.

I would say that Library of Ruina is a good source for these with plenty of unique themes for the various bosses you encounter. To me, the Love Town theme is perhaps one of the standouts when it comes to atmosphere though, yikes. The various themes from The Caligula Effect 2 is also a good pick with how the game uses them. Oh, and one old time favorite of mine would be Reflux battle theme from Rayman 3.

Not gonna lie, I'm kinda shocked that Gilgamesh's battle theme from all of his Final Fantasy appearances didn't even get a mention. "Battle on the Big Bridge" is legendary, and it's followed him in every boss appearance (sans FF1: DoS and FF6 Advance), often getting a really cool remix to fit the theme/setting of the game. I think my personal favorite version (aside from the original FFV one) is the version used for his DLC fight in FFXIII-2. It has a very Japanese feel to it with some heavier backing, making for a really unique take on the song. And if you factor in The Black Mages version, that's still one of my favorite tracks of theirs to this day!

Unfathomed Force from the Trails games. This theme is majestic in every sense of the word. It somewhat loses its punch in Azure, considering you hear it 3 times, but in Cold Steel 3, Oh, my Aidios are you in for quite a musical treat. At Juno Navel Fortress, You control both Rean's party consisting of himself, Aurelia Le Guin, a badass swordswoman who's mastered both Vander and Arseid styles of swordsmanship, which aside from the Imperial family, have very high prestige among the Erebonian nobility, Jusis Albarea, a nobleman, and member of old Class VII, Millium Orion, The Ironbloods' White Rabbit, and Altina's older sister, and Gaius Worzel, a foreign exchange student from the land of Nord, and new Class VII, 5 students under Rean's tutelage, with Angelica Rogner, who, without mincing words, is the game's resident lesbian pervert. While the new Class VII watches in shock and awe at their principal getting ready for a fight with Ouroboros' 7th Anguis, Arianrhod, The Steel Maiden, the fight unfolds with her and her legion of 3 knights, known as the Stahlritter, fighting Rean's group. And it is awesome. I know people are gonna point out that unlike Azure, which is brutal, because you don't have things like combat links, and Brave orders to bail you out, and while I can see why the challenge would be more appealing, I personally enjoy the Cold Steel fight, because you actually have to win in order to progress, and the bosses are at the same level as your heroes. The song itself gives you a sense of otherworldly wonder, but has that underlying sense of honor and humanity. Perfect for Arianrhod's character, because while she's aligned with the villains, she's actually one of the kindest members of Ouroboros; a true anti-villain, and that's all I'll say without going into Cold Steel 4 spoilers about her motivations, and her role there.

Glad Dedede’s theme showed up, but I also have to give credit to Meta Knight’s theme, especially Sword of the Surviving Guardian from Forgotten Land. I find it beat that the quintessential musical reference in MK’s theme, My Friend and the Setting Sun, is so minor, as if that battle was so long ago it’s started to fade from Kirby and Meta Knight’s memories. Also gotta give credits to both Hornet’s and Grimm’s themes from Hollow Knight. Hornet’s being surprisingly upbeat foreshadows that she’s not really your enemy, even if your first encounter with her is while she’s literally standing over the corpse of one of your brethren. Both of Grimm’s themes, meanwhile, are just as bombastic and intense as the man-bat-moth-whatever himself. It’s also a good thing NKG’s theme is so good, since you’ll be hearing a lot of it.

Man, that Ridley boss theme is seriously one of my favorite classic boss tunes of all time. It also was my introduction to the musical compositions of Minako Hamano. Along with being one of the composers of the Metroid series up to Metroid Prime 3 (the other big recurring name in Metroid music being Kenji Yamamoto), she also composed many of the tracks in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and a few other games. To this day, she's involved in either the sound or music support for various Nintendo games (the latest being as the sound coordinator for the series she's primarily known for with 2021's Metroid Dread). Every single track on this list is a certified banger, though. What could be better for that than boss character themes? :)

I'd also like to throw Doopliss's theme from TTYD and Malevolent Magikoopa from Sticker Star into the ring. The former has vibes of a demented carnival, befitting Doopliss's appearance and personality, all while adding in chimes of the bell he used to torment the citizens of Twilight Town. Malevolent Magikoopa, on the other hand, really captures just how sly and crafty Kamek is, going on to become his leitmotif for the Paper Mario games since.

I think I'll go with "The Black Wolf Stalks Again" from Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers that plays during the second phase of the Castrum Marinum Trial (I'll list the trial names instead of the boss names for spoiler reasons). Freaking love the guitar in this piece combined with the orchestral and synth aspects brought in during various parts of the piece. Honestly feels like it could fit in really well in an SMT game. Some honorabel mentions (that are also from FF14): "Fiend" (Containment Bay S1T7); "Wayward Daughter" (Castrum Fluminis); "To the Edge" (Seat of Sacrifice); "Return to Oblivion" (Eden's Verse: Refulgence) and "eScape" (Alphascape 3.0).

Archange from Ace Combat 7. This plays in the final battle with Mihaly, who comes at you with a railgun-equipped superplane to "test" if you are worthy to end the Lighthouse War and stop Erusea's production of combat drones, but admits that he was partially responsible because he provided his flight data for the Erusean radicals to use for the drone AI, and he did so to satisfy his ego and continue flying. My honorable mentions: (Disclaimer, Not all of these mentions are “Character Boss Themes” per se, but I mainly put them here for how much they slap.) All Of Them (Cuphead + Delicious Last Course) From Floral Fury to Baking The Wondertart, all of these songs are amazing. Attack! Fury Bowser (Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury) Apparently Bowser was into rock and roll before he was voiced by Jack Black. Who knew? Boss Noize (River City Girls) A musician girl who fights via a scythe shaped guitar and giant Guitar Hero prompts should also have a killer theme to boot. Bury The Light (Devil May Cry 5) A song worthy of Capcom’s greatest sibling rivalry. Chum Bucket Lab (SpongeBob SquarePants Battle For Bikini Bottom) Probably the most epic final boss theme in any SpongeBob game. Dingodile’s Theme (Crash Bandicoot Warped N Sane) Break out the butter, he’s gonna make toast. Dr Finkelstein’s Song (Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie’s Revenge) While it’s not a remix of the original movie’s iconic soundtrack, it’s still pretty great. Gang Plank Galleon + Crocodile Cacophony (Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2) Whether it’s the SNES originals or their Smash remixes, these are some of K Rool’s finest hours. Konga Conga Kappa (Crypt Of The Necrodancer) Come on, shake your body baby, do the Conga I know you can't control yourself any longer. Megalovania (Undertale) If you even think about choosing the Genocide Route, you’re gonna have a bad time. Meta Knight Sword Of The Surviving Guardian (Kirby And The Forgotten Land) This is the best Meta Knight theme so far. And this is for the masked badass that one a Grammy for Void’s sake. A Million Gruesome Ways To Die (Billie Bust Up) A giant ghost owl chases you down while singing about all the ways you could meet your demise. Sloprano (Conker’s Bad Fur Day) Because of course a fight with a giant singing turd should include a full blown opera. Starring Wario (DDR Mario Mix) A dance battle against Wario set to a dance remix of Greenhorn Forest from Wario World? Yes please! (Sorry, Waluigi) U N Owen Was Her (Touhou) Well, need I say more? What I’m Made Of (Sonic Heroes) The ultimate track for the ultimate battle against the ultimate overlord.

Dedede's theme is always great, but I want to also give attention to another reoccurring boss from the Kirby series with his own set of kick ass themes, that being the blue swordsman, Meta Knight. While his theme isn't as consistent as the King's, it's still awesome every time. Whether it's the Super Star theme or a newer take on the Revenge of Meta Knight credits theme, this swordsman always has an excellent battle theme to accompany his awesome sword duels, especially with Forgotten Land's Sword of the Surviving Guardian.

Okay, I have two different tracks I wanna highlight. First off, Hero of Darkness from Fairy Fencer F. It plays when you fight Sherman during the climax of the Goddess route (or just the original game before Advent Dark Force added alternate routes), and it perfectly suits his madness by that point in the game. He's gone so far up his own justice-obsessed ass that he is willing to risk the destruction of the world just for a _chance_ to fix everything he sees wrong with it. Also, the techno kinda feel definitely works with the futuristic motif of his Fury. Then there's Light of Strength from Mary Skelter Finale. At first, I was a bit confused on whether or not it would even work, given how it's the theme for a group of bosses rsther than a single one, but then you put Trap Phantasm into your honorable mentions and I realized it's fine. It's the theme of the Massacre Pink, the main antagonistic group of this game. You first hear it when Guillotine wipes the floor with your party with little to no difficulty, which immediately sets the precedent of them being dangerous. And when you look into their backstory, you realize that some parts of the theme are... kinda sad, actually. Which makes sense, given that said backstory shows that they all desperately need a hug after all they've been through. Especially Guillotine herself, who has a very _personal_ relationship with the final boss.

Number 1 was pretty obvious Some I'd add: - "Remember/ Mechanized Memories:" Armored Core 4 & 5 A chaotic piece that sounds like its being sung through an intercom speaker, describing the feeling of unease, dehumanization and isolation of being trapped in an unbeatable war machine that is the White Glint, mirroring the experience of AC pilots as a whole. The theme shows up not just for White Glint but for mechs built from parts of it, giving it a cool twist of it being the machine's theme rather than that of a pilot in particular. - Gabriel's themes in ULTRAKILL. Call them like that cause its more of an evolving leitmotiff similar to Dedede's theme. Divine Intervention is a short loop portraying Gabriel's pride and power. Death of God's Will adds his hatred, despair and self-doubt and "The World Looks White/The World Looks Red" slows down expressing his sorrow and soon demise.

I'm going with Battle! Bede from from Pokémon Sword and Shield. As a person, Bede feels like if one of the classic "jerk rivals" from older games were given a secondary position and was very salty about it. Throughout the first two-thirds of the game, he ties his whole identity to his relationship with League Chairman Rose, from his endorsement to the Gym Challenge to helping with Rose's ambitions. It comes off like an inferiority complex, to the point where he *needs* to be the best just to feel any self-worth. His battle theme reflects this in its fast pace and frantic melody. It also feels like there are two songs trying to compete for space at times, making it sound even more unhinged.

In regards to best gaming guns; Halo CE's pistol immediately comes to mind. Of course, there's also the RYNO family from Ratchet & Clank and Ratchet himself even lampshades this at one point in the series. The finger machine gun specifically in Armored Core: Project Phantasma was quite overpowered. Team Fortress 2's stock guns are generally solid; except maybe for the Medic's. I wonder if Samus Aran's arm cannon would even count. Then there's a gun that doesn't have its own built-in ammo but can be quite handy; Half-Life 2's gravity gun.

My 5 favorites (in no particular order): 1. Receive You: The Prototype and all its following variations-Yakuza Series (Wherever Majima goes, some remix of this song follows. The version from 4 being my favorite on account of the fast paced intensity that I think befits the Mad Dog of Shimano) 2. The Vital Vitriol-Shovel Knight (Plague Knight's mad scientist persona and the erratic nature of the fight itself are encapsulated in this fast pace 8-bit tune. It even reappears in his own campaign as the first final boss theme) 3. Vs. 1010-No Straight Roads (One of the earliest songs from this game I heard, it got me liking this game's OST right away. The clean and poppy feel of tune gives off a sense of artificiality that befits the literally manufactured boyband this song belongs to. Honorable mentions go to SAYU and Yinu's themes) 4. Maiden's Capriccio~ Dream Battle-Touhou~ Imperishable Night (The main heroine has you in her sights and you're about to regret it. Reimu has had plenty of character themes across the series, but this is the one that I readily associate with the Shrine Maiden of Paradise) 5. Battle! Piers-Pokémon Sword and Shield (A rock star Gym Leader deserves to have an intense rock piece for a battle theme. The only time that has ever happened for a Gym Leader)

Two major shout outs. Megalomania and Throw Away Your Mask. Megalomania is a cheat but I'm counting it because theyre all against Odio. Regardless of him being technically different every time, I think it counts Throw Away Your Mask is perfect. Doesn't count by the rules of the list because it's the final boss theme but I don't care it's so damn good, for the same reason as the Revengeance themes. It just perfectly encapsulates Maruki's character and its literally just him asking you to stop fighting and to accept that he's trying to do something good for the world

This countdown had some entries that I recognize and others that were new to me. How could I forget Ridley's theme and One-Winged Angel as possibilities? If I had to bring a personal honorable mention, I would also choose Dr. Neo Cortex theme, from the Crash Bandicoot series, but just like you did with Dedede's entry, I would pick every track he's in, throughout the games. The idea that there's a leitmotif that expands with each new fight is amazing, and thanks to the remakes you can make a comparison between the PS1 and PS4 versions to see which instruments were used. And in Crash 4, not only we have two new boss battles with him where we see new iterations of the iconic theme, but there are also some levels where you play as Cortex and his leitmotif is still there, with variations based on the world's environment.

I thought you are gonna go with Fury Sparks at least an honorable mention. If you wanted to talk about clash of Ideology, look no further than Yuri vs Flynn. They are like Lelouch and Suzaku. Yuri and Flynn got their technique name mostly the same but their executions were very different. Flynn believe in tradition and following it to the teeth while Yuri was more flexible and creative. Heck, there was a skit when they argue how Tiger Blade should be like. Yuri believe the Empire should be fixed from the outside while Flynn want to fix it in the inside.

If I had a nickel for every time we had an antagonist with an imposing backing theme that perfectly exemplified the nature of their struggle...I'd have two nickels...which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. O.o My other honorable mention would have to be Undefeatable from Sonic Frontiers; much like "It Has To Be This Way", the song could very much be interpreted as being from both Sonic's point of view and the Titan, Giganto's, but as for me? I see it as Sonic's hype track: he's back and better than ever and ready for Round 2 against the big bad Evangelion that curbstomped him at the beginning. And, come on, it's vehemently clear that these boss themes took some clear inspiration from Metal Gear Rising with head-banging, pulse-pounding, HEAVY! METAL! ACTION! I can't NOT love the frenetic kinetic and oh-so-energetic nature of these tracks, but Undefeatable in particular just hits different: it really feels like a meta commentary on how Sonic is back in true form, and I wouldn't have it any other way. ;)

Is a "Best Final Boss Song" Countdown possible? Dunno if you've ever played this game, but I highly recommend "Fancy Meat Computer" from Hylics 2. It's the grooviest final boss theme ever!

In Monster Hunter; the monsters sometimes have their own themes. Favorites for me include Ceadeus part 2, Zinogre, Brachydios, G-Rank Crimson Fatalis (Frontier), White Fatalis, Shantiyen part 2 and part 4, Deviljho, Nargacuga, and Rathalos.

Admittedly I expected number 1 to be what it is, as soon as I heard "less final boss fights." You can't put out the flames of dank memes. I'm still surprised that toons like Cannonball, although being a final boss fight, and Zero's battle themes, both of them whether it be X2 or X5, didn't make the list.

Honestly, you could do a whole countdown for Final Fantasy XIV’s music, but I’d like to highlight “The Final Day” and “With Hearts Aligned”, the themes for Endwalker’s climactic battle against the embodiment of despair, The Endsinger. Over the course of the final zone, Ultima Thule, Meteion has done everything in her power and then some to try and make you give in to despair, believing the end she brings to be a kindness, as she has absorbed the despair of countless stars and is in desperate need of some hope…Well, when you finally confront her right after the dungeon simply known as The Dead Ends, you ride atop Zenos (Who has been hounding you for a good chunk of the expansion only to realize that he’s not gonna get the 1v1 he so desires unless he does you a solid first) in his dragon form from the climax of Stormblood and chase down Meteion(Now the Endsinger), calling forth 7 of your allies to take her down as “The Final Day”, a wonderful medley of the themes for previous final bosses, blasts in the background. And then, when the Endsinger thinks she’s gotten you and your party down with an attack that in any other case would probably cause a party wipe, the music stops and the screen goes black for a little bit before the reveal that your party survived the attack thanks to the fervent prayers of your comrades, at which point “With Hearts Aligned”, a rocking mashup of Endwalker’s main theme “Footfalls” and the player character’s leitmotif “The Maker’s Ruin”, kicks in while you and your party proceed to flip the script on the Endsinger, as by that point she can only flail desperately in a vain last ditch effort to stop your inevitable victory, for no despair she can inflict can possibly match the hope you and your comrades bring, as her song of oblivion is drowned out by your banging song of hope. It perfectly illustrates that you’ve come a REALLY long way, and you’re not about to let any amount of negativity stop you. You are carrying life’s song, cradled fast within your arms, and it’s chorus WILL ring for all. TL;DR: You are bringing hope to someone that desperately needs it, AND THEN SOME.

I have a couple of HMs to add! A couple are from the same games or series, but they speak for their characters beautifully (or badassically) all the same. “Don’t Stand in My Way” (Vergil Theme 1, DMC3) Cerberus boss battle (DMC3) “Rivers in the Desert” (Shido/The Holy Grail boss theme, Persona 5) “The Battle for Everybody’s Souls” (The Avatar of Nyx, Persona 3) Nishikiyama’s final battle theme (Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami) Kuze’s boss theme (Yakuza 0) Scarlet’s boss theme (Silent Hill: Homecoming) “Insane Aristocracy” (Isaac, Castlevania: Curse of Darkness) This all being said, I do love the list. They are all excellent boss character themes, no question, and they are all badass bops.

There are three characters whose boss themes just scream "I AM THE HYPE!" for me Miror B: probably loses points for having two different boss themes between games, but his role is also different. He went from the Cipher Admin with by far the most personality to just a guy who randomly shows up to cause trouble. I prefer his XD theme, but there's certainly a place for his Admin theme in Colosseum Rider Willie: certainly stretches the definition of boss battle, and arguably isn't one, but he's a trainer with a unique battle theme (in XD), so let me have this. The fucking strings man, Colosseum and XD have such great music, and he's the only character to carry over his battle theme from Colosseum Star Wolf: cheating to include a (small) team here? Probably, but their theme is unforgettable for anyone who's played Star Fox 64, and especially Assault, where their theme is taken up to 11 on better hardware. The symbolism isn't really there, but it's a theme iconic to the characters nonetheless

If there's one series I think you missed out on this Countdown, It's the Ace Combat Series. There are PLENTY of Tracks from that Series that are Both a Joy to the Ears... and Total Heartbreak. If you want a Soundtrack that Beautifully and Hauntingly showcases both the Reality of War Itself AND its Aftermath... Look no further.

This would be a hard list to do, especially with the metal gear pick. While I haven’t ranked my own list, my picks would be: Cannonball (hard revenge) Megaman zx (had to disqualify the original version but zx’s version still gets your blood pumping) Supporting me - sonic adventure 2 (an underrated gem IMO. Compared to a lot of sonic boss themes at that time, this one is more mellow, kinda suiting shadow’s attitude heading into the battle against the biolizard) Betting on the Last guide - Tales of Xillia 2 (while it is used for 2 boss battles, the 1st time it’s played is when it’s revealed that “Victor” was actually alternate dimension of Ludger who’s responsible for killing most of the main party members in is timeline, while the 2nd time has ludger refuse to sacrifice his brother to save their dimension, snap and kill all the other party members… becoming “Victor”) Highbrow - Star Ocean 3 (kinda cheating here because it is the final boss’s theme, but it’s used again in a post game hidden dungeon where it’s used in a rematch against Luther and a alternate version of Fayt) The great mighty poo - Conker’s bad fur day (it just fits the game and the boss perfectly) Mingy Jongo’s theme - Banjo tooie (will admit, vs Grunty from the 1st game would’ve been in but it’s the final boss, however I have a soft spot for dark reprise’s of character themes… in this case Mumbo Jumbo) Ashen Demon - Fire Emblem Warriors 3 hopes (anytime byleth appears and this plays and you start to feel like a mook being hunted down by an overpowered fire emblem protagonist) Giga-Gideon - Scott Pilgrim (I initially overlooked it because I forgot Giga Gideon isn’t the final boss 😂) Spear of justice/undyne the undying - Undertale (I couldn’t pick one without mentioning the other.) Lubu’s theme -dynasty warriors (I count this because a. Lubu is the only character to have his own theme. b. It only plays when you face him. c. Like ashen demon, when this plays, you’ll get the feeling of “ohhhh crap” if you are unprepared)

Leibniz Rising from Blaster Master Zero 3 Leibniz was introduced in BMZ2 as a foil and rival to Protagonist Jason Fundrik. Like Jason, Leibniz's home planet was invaded by the mutant menace, the Invem Dark Star Army, and their hope for salvation fell to Leibnez, the Metal Attacker Garuda (a flying super tank supplied by the Sophia Defense Force), and their support droid Lucia. But where Jason succeeded in liberating the Earth, Leibniz failed, HARD, losing everything but Garuda to the mutant invaders. This left an imbittered Leibniz to roam the galaxy in Garuda, attacking any MA pilot that crosses their path. Leibniz has it out for Jason especially, as not only has Jason succeeded in nearly everything Leibniz failed at, Jason only even met Leibniz in route to planet Sophia because he's hoping to find a cure for Eve's Mutant corruption. But over the course of the game, Leibniz comes to respect Jason as a pilot, and Eve's refusal to give up, even stepping up in the true ending to rally the other MA pilots to their aid, and evenprotect the Earth from a second Mutant invasion while Jason and Eve finally reach planet Sophia. Fast forward to Zero three, Jason and eve have been incarcerated due to Eve's Part Mutant condition, and Leibniz gets shot down by the Sophia defense force, totally not while trying to pull off a daring rescue or anything, Baaaaaka!! Fast forward again to the true final chapter, which pits you in rematches against the four MA pilots from Zero two, for reasons that the game withholds till the final act because Spoilers. The last line of defense is of course, Leibniz, in the newly upgraded Rising Garuda. The boss theme, Leibniz Rising, is a heroic rearrangement of Leibniz's dark and gloomy character theme, that perfectly encapsulates their growth as a character, from dark rival to antihero, and to a true hero who gives their all, because Leibniz has something to protect, and She is going to give Her all to this fight.
