I much prefer to see an attempt to recreate a tank over just using whatever. So many movies, especially in the 50s - 70s, just used what was current. Kelly's Heros might have been the first to at least try. Of coarse when you have a limited budget corners have to be cut someplace.
@JopardBDS

To my mind the Kelly's Heroes tiger was one of the best Tiger mock ups. Unless you do some serious engineering the lack of overlapping road wheels will give away any attempt to impersonate late war German armour. Also by stressing the rear attacks (based on Odd-ball's comment) they reduced the number of side shots which are the big give away

Loved this video. I have to give these movie makers credit. I hearken back to the days when films used unmodified M47's, M48's to portray Tigers or generic German tanks and Chafees to portray US tanks. Even though their tanks are sometimes silly looking, at least they're trying. Not everybody can get the Bovi Tiger for their films. Perhaps the Pershing was based on a Chinese tractor rather than a tank?

I just watched white tiger the other day. I thought it was pretty cool as far as infantry weapons were concerned seeing them carry the SVT 40 rifles and seeing at least one PTRS (didn't get a really good look at it but it was a anti tank rifle) BUT the "tiger", once again, horrible. We all understand getting the real tiger is extremely difficult to say the least but man, that one was, I think, the worst mock up I've seen. It's one thing to take American tanks (Battle of the Bulge/Patton) and just throw some paint on them and call them king tigers or take a T34 and mock them up but dang, white tiger mock up was just plain horrible. lol (and we won't go far into how the main gun sounded. no idea what they were trying to do there.) And while the story line jumped around a bit the message at the end was good. (At least I thought it was.) Would I watch it again? Probably not but I had to give it a watch.

Those were actually active service Spanish Army vehicles, bought from the US by the then-Franco regime. The Patton production not only borrowed the vehicles, but hired the crews and Spanish soldiers as extras. As far as I'm aware, most of the tanks and troops came from the Brunete Division, now disbanded and reorganized. One of their main bases was at El Goloso (Madrid), pretty close to where I live, is still occupied by one of it's successor units, and is host to a modest armored vehicle museum.

Real reason was, at that time, military high command was annoyed by interpretation of officers in earlier military comedy movie and refused to participate in any movie done by the production company. @@David-eh9le I did some research and apparently not. The US doesn't allow the private ownership of vehicle models in active service, and since they're the ones who commission and build them, and they're not selling them, save for select US-aligned governments... Besides, the exact composition of the Abrams's armor is not public, so I doubt they'd let it fall into private hands where other nations can get a hold of it, which is a very real possibility, and something the US itself has done, to test the capabilities of equipment from non-allied nations.

After watching White Tiger the first time, I tried to figure out what tank they were using for the supernatural Tiger tank. I read some article that claimed the movie company had a visually good replica built but after running it a few times, the tracks started to break apart. Apparently they didn't have time to have new tracks made so they went with a vis-modded IS-2 instead because one was quickly available (however while the vis-modding required hiding the wheels to prevent it being identified as a Soviet tank, I think all it really did was make it look too weird to be convincing!). How true that is I have no way of knowing, it was an article on the internet I read six or so years ago, so take it for what that's worth.

I do ww2 German reenacting and our unit has the stug from band of Brothers that got knocked out with a bazooka. It was 2 FV432 British APC's welded together so that it would have six road wheels like a stug 3. The super structure is all real thin metal and a lot of the spare track links all over it are like paper mache. Also the drivers position used to be on the right side and he had his own thin metal hatch that has since been permanently attached when they swapped the drivers position to the left

The Tiger is rare as many were abandoned and destroyed during the late stages of the war to prevent them from being pressed in Allied service. Plus they were expensive to make and overly complicated so it wasn't easy to produce them in large numbers. Barely 1,350 were built with 900 lost in combat! Those kinds of numbers will definitely put a huge crimp in your supply chain, LOL...
