Ys 8's initial translation was hilarious. Some of the worst lines were: "I-I was actually a medical student.." "A medical student...?" "That's a student who studies medicine." "My name is Allison... Please, just call me Allison." "He looks terrified.." (said while looking at an inanimate object) and of course the Archeozoic Big Hole. But there are countless other errors like Primordials becoming Ancient Species, character names being closer to the romanized word rather than the intended English equivalent like Icarusia instead of Iclucia (there's a song called Iclucian Dance so this mistake is really strange), and just awkward sentences.

I still remember the pre-release hype for Fallout 76 here. I live in West Virginia, and people who knew the game was coming were **so excited!** There were in-game tours planned, play parties, Fallout fan launch parties… The WV Tourism Bureau (or whatever the official name is) was actually planning a special tour route through the state for out-of-state and international players, which would showcase key areas, monuments, landmarks, and cities throughout the Mountain State! Local gamers were so happy to finally get to show off our beautiful state, and honored that Bethesda was recreating it all in a major game like this. So you can imagine the backlash when the game released, and it turned out to be the mother of all Bethesda bug infestations. Fallout has never been that big a deal for me as a gamer, so I just breezed right by it while flipping Bethesda some extra birds. But I do know a few local gamers who STILL haven’t forgiven them for Fallout 76 and their overall attitude about it. Heck, one of my father’s students went out and bought every used copy of Fallout 76 he could find, and used them for target shooting at his family’s farm! The game may be fixed, but I reckon that level of animosity ain’t going nowhere anytime soon.

It really amazes me how some poorly terrible games on release can be improved upon years later and end up being the game that was promised. Not every bad game gets that opportunity.

Honestly, I'm surprised Nickelodeon All Star Brawl wasn't at least an honorable mention. Because much like the OTHER games on this list, it was overhyped beyond all reason ("smash killer" ring any bells?) and released as a VERY lackluster smash clone that everyone wrote off. But the devs didn't give up. They kept trying to make improvements and listened to the fans. But I think the moment it was clear it was truly on path to be fixed was when Jenny's reveal trailer dropped, as not only did they get the MOST requested character in, she also came with the one thing pretty much everyone was demanding: VOICE ACTING.

The part with NISA and it's Falcom localizations hits harder after the official english release of Trails from Zero just as early as this Tuesday. And don't get me started in the ZeroField spreadsheets...
@chloethespider6298
2 жыл бұрын
@Grima the Fell Dragon Well, the thing with the Trails from Zero release is that the official localization comes from The Geofront patch, a really, really good localization made by the team by the same name, which was released early 2021, and not much later, so was the patch localizating Trails to Azure, the secuel of Trails from Zero. NISA decided to collab with them to make the official localizations of both games. Here's the thing: Trails from Zero already took more than one year to be officially released with the english translation. And it has one or two errors like text that is straight up not translated. You know, despite that all the work was already done. And the official localization for Trails to Azure will be released in March 2023. Which is, again, a ton of time to wait knowing that the work is already done. The ZeroField spreadsheets, on the other hand, was also a team of fans, creating a tool to translate Trails into Reverie and Kuro no Kiseki in real time. And like, one month before Kuro 2's release, with the team getting ready to work on that, they got a cease & desist from NISA, which made them retire the spreadsheets from their web, and they won't be allowed to work on Kuro 2, of course. So, yeah, Trails fans are, as you may expect, kind of pissed with NISA.

I know this list was made before it came out, but I feel like Sonic Frontiers Final Horizon should get an honorable mention, because the updates literally elvated it from good, to one of the 3d Sonic games ever, at least for me. The original Frontiers definitely wasn't broken, or even bad. But it definitely had a couple of glaring issues, such as it being too easy, a lack of momentum, and a pretty weak ending, etc. But when the released the second and third updates, they changed everything. You can spindash, you can keep your momentum, more playable characters that we haven't seen since 06 17 years ago. And the big thing was the new ending. It solved literally every problem with the original. It gave an epic final boss, a new super form, and gave us an actual satisfying climactic finish. It wasn't maybe fixed as well as the ones on this list, but it definitely deserves to be recognized. Especially since all of it was done for FREE.

Here's an idea for a list, unless it's already been done, top 10 Mystery Games. The criteria being: "How well does the gameplay mesh with the story? Do the gameplay mechanics compliment the story being told or are they aggravatingly distracting?" "How well built up is the mystery itself? Can you notice the subtler details hinting at what was really going on? Were the clues perhaps good enough for you to draw the same conclusions as the cast, or were they all too vague for you to draw the same conclusions?" "How well written are the characters, can you trust everyone or never trust anyone? Was the mastermind someone you suspected from the very beginning or a curve ball that throws everything you thought you knew out the window?" "Was the payoff any good? Did everything wrap up in a nice little bow, or did it intentionally leave things vague for the sake of sequels it may not even get?" "If there were sequels or multimedia peices surrounding it, how well do they compliment the story if at all? Do they add on to it in a way that respects the original and even sheds better light on things that might've intentionally or unintentionally been left vague? Or do they take away from the original story by retconning story elements and/or motives that may have been simple to understand at first only to now make them as confusing as the FNaF Lore/Timeline or throw in some new big bad that claims to be the true mastermind when the original clearly states that was the case, and so forth." Bonus Criteria: "How much fun was the game itself? Despite now knowing everything, can you still go back to these games and still have fun? Do they have a gameplay loop that draws you in, or a post game that offers additional modes or a chance to finish 100%ing it if you were previously locked out of doing so once the climax started?"

@@CountShaman Danganronpa would probably be 6th or 7th on the list though, to be honest. The first game has a LOT of flaws, one of them being certain story elements that may have worked in the Japanese version REALLY didn't translate well into the English release and sometimes it can be predictable as to what's going on meaning it can become a slog to sit through as the cast end up playing catch up to the player. Another thing I feel brings it to those slots is three things: One, The End of Hope's Peak Academy's absolute lackluster way of ending the Hope's Peak Saga on top of comiting character assassination to anyone and everyone it could just for the sake of a "Story". Two, Killing Harmony attempting to Quasi-Reboot the franchise by having it set in an alternate universe... With an ending absolutely no one liked. And three, while all the multimedia surrounding it expanded the lore, story, and characters of past games... 90% of it is Japan Exclusive with the ONLY way to get them in the states is by looking them up online through fan translations... Take some notes, console versions of Cyberpunk. >:( 10: Okay, if Rare is going to play around with old IPs, I don't actually have a strong connection to Banjo-Kazooie. I would want to see Kameo or Viva Pinata. (Sea of Thieves) 9: Konami is just the worst. I kinda wonder what could've happened if P.T. had actually managed to be made into Silent Hills and become more than just a playable teaser that Konami decided should be wiped off the map. I KNOW that people would have liked it, because to this day, it's considered one of the most terrifying experiences in gaming. And what is the point of a game making company again? To provide games people will like to get money.(Silent Hill Downpour) 8: Of ALL people, why did it have to be EA who bought Pop Cap? Pop Cap has made some of my favorite games, and EA has massacred their main success and left the others to rot. Sorry that this has nothing to do with Star Wars, I just needed to rant. (Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)) 7: So, is this a bad time to try to get into the fandom? 23:24 with regards to cyberpunk, I am still willing to give CDPR the benefit of the doubt about how it came out. It was basically a case of “we want to delay it a little longer so that it comes out good” vs “fans are upset that the game is not out yet, we need to put it out.”
@jokiu4

When No Man's Sky was announced, sure I was really interested, but at the same time I had a feeling that it wouldn't be good at first. I guess it's been a pattern with games that would promise the moon but under-deliver. So I felt I would sit that one out, but keep an eye on it. Sure enough I was right, but I didn't hate the game or the people, I kept waiting it out, to see what would happen, and my patience was rewarded. Update after update came out, it wasn't until the Visions update that I finally thought "okay, this game is amazing now, and it's on sale!" Now NMS is, without a doubt, one of my top favorite games. I don't play it much now but I'm always happy knowing I have the game and I can play it anytime. But also because part of me always wants to reset my progress whenever a big update comes out, so I guess I'm kinda waiting until the game is """done""" before I can commit to a complete playthrough.

Biggest fixed game that came to mind for me was Street Fighter V. At launch it barely had any content, 16 characters, no arcade mode, poor netcode, sub par story mode, etc. Now we have Champion Edition and it’s a much better game overall.

One more thing about Fallout 76 that I’m surprised you didn’t mention. They went back on their promise to not have any gameplay-effecting microtransactions. The worst of it came in Fallout First, which had features that should’ve been in the game at launch, locked behind a subscription paywall.

Yoshi-P basically told his entire team to go play World of Warcraft for 6 months after they took down the servers before they began rebuilding the game, and it shows. XIV's gameplay is very similar to WoW, and during the last part of WoW: Shadowlands, you had a _lot_ of WoW KZitemrs saying that XIV's Shadowbringers easily beat WoW in nearly every way, except for PvP and a few players saying that they missed Mythic+ (though I can't imagine why, as M+ is one of the worst things about WoW right behind the PvP). So basically, XIV beat WoW at their own game, lol.

Honestly for the Blizzard entry I would have chosen the original World of Warcraft when it first came out if people wouldn't realize I just meant the original game without the expansions if not for two reasons. One, NO ONE could have expected how many people were going to buy and play that game. NO ONE. Blizzard had no idea how absolutely chock full of people it would have. Two... well... most people look on those original couple months as one of the world's greatest game launches of all time due to how World of Warcraft Vanilla got so much attention but also, well, how many people STAYED.

It's a little late to be posting this, so you may not see this, but I thought of an interesting top 10 list for you. You recently did the Top 10 Dragons in Gaming, so how about we go with their eternal rivals; the knights? Meta Knight and Shovel Knight are both candidates that immediately come to mind, though considering that I don't play a lot of games involving medieval worlds, I am sure that there are plenty of knights that I'm not thinking of.

I genuinely liked and enjoyed Cyberpunk2077 at launch on Xbox One and only experienced two glitches then, an npc t-posing and textures not loading due to driving too fast. But the thing that kept me from playing further and even beating the gam then was the memory leak issue that didn't get fixed till the second big patch, and once it was i kept coming back to the game and playing it for awhile and then stopping for a bit, only to have sunk nearly 50hrs into the game on my most recent playthrough without having gotten mid way through the story. And, one thing alot of people forget is that the Witcher 3 launched just as, if not more buggy then Cyberpunk2077 and it took CDPR 6 years to make it into their quote unquote magnum opus, and if given the same amount of time and love i do believe Cyberpunk2077 could surpass the Witcher 3.

Of all the games on this list: NMS and FFXIV are easily the biggest redemption stories. I play FFXIV on a regular basis and it's easily one of the best MMOs out there, and Naoki Yoshida is one of the main conductors to its success. NMS I kept an ear and eye towards and have heard nothing but praises in recent months. Not all games get the redemption arcs they needed. Some games that had promise sadly failed and died as a result. Others did get redeemed, but the damage was done and the devs or publisher can be blamed for it.

Here's one for me personally, and a lot of others. Monster Hunter World. The game was far too easy, the more open map design was poorly handled in most cases, the new monsters ranged from alright to godawful (hi Kulu, Pukei and Titzi) and the weapon balancing pretty much didn't exist. Also the endgame grind was horrible, arch-tempered monsters were far too overtooled and Xenojiva, the final boss. Was a huge dissapointment compared to other endgame fights in other base MH games. Then Iceborne happened. Holy shit. Give variants to some of the best newcomers, bring back fan favourites like Zinogre, Nargacuga, Glavenus and Brachidios. Introduce new monsters like Beotodus and Banbaro. An actual interesting endgame with not only fights like Safi Jiva but also the guiding lands, ruiner nergigante, the Final fantasy XIV crossover with Behemoth, new monsters added with updates and of course, the big finale. The best version of Fatalis in the series history hands down. Rise had a similar cycle, but at least the base game was still fun if somewhat easy. Sunbreak just added to an already good game. Iceborne fixed a bad game.
@treadingwater86

The funny thing is that for me, it is the opposite. Rise is still fun to play, at least once you are actually in the quests themselves (even if the particle-effects looks kind of cheap when combined with the lifelife World-esque models and Teostra is a particularely bad offender), but there is a lot of annoyances with everything that surrounds the quests that puts it below World in my opinion. The room customization is so barren that you might as well have cut it out of the game entirely (something they could have fixed in Sunbreak like World did in Iceborne but they chose not to), the endemic life are reduced to nothing but stat-buffs and there is little incentive to actually explore the nooks and crannies even though the maps are really well-thought-out with plenty of hidden secrets and areas to find (I am still salty that the only reward you get for collecting all the Relic Records are just some statues), and not to even mention that it has potentially the weakest story of any Monster Hunter-game that actually tries to have one. Which sucks, because the ideas that are there (feeling useless because of not being a hunter in a village full of hunters and finding your own way to contribute, as well as the link between Hinoa and Minoto and the two serpents) could have been really interesting if explored more. This makes the game feel even more tedious than it needed to be because there was very little keeping me invested beyond just how fun the quests were by themselves. I do acknowledge your criticisms of World, I personally stayed away from Tempered Monsters entirely because of how sharp the difficulty-spike was and I admittedly is not a fan of how samey a lot of the weapons look as well as how every single weapon in a set requires the same amount of parts (making the grinding way more tedious than it has to be if you want to have multiple weapons from the same monster), but for me personally I felt much more connected with that world. The way the story carried you from quest to quest made me really interested in continuing to play in order to find out where the story was going and I was way more invested in the characters because it allowed them to feel like people instead of just NPCs you only interact with when you have to. And even though the new monsters weren't always the most exciting, they did feel like they were apart of a living ecosystem and had interesting interactions with both the world and each other.
@hariman7727

My only other experience with monster hunter was trying to play monster Hunter tri and not really getting into it at the time, so monster Hunter world was everything I thought was missing from the prior game. But I also agree with you that the arch-tempered monster system was awful, and there was a certain limited nature of the content in the base monster Hunter world.

I must have been extremely lucky because I never encountered any of the notorious glitches when I played Assassin's Creed Unity, and this was before the mondo patch. The problem that I had was with the way you earned in-game money, in that it was too little and too slow and the prices for various items and even outfit elements were exhorbitant. Which boggles my mind because every single other main Assassin's Creed game barring the first had these exact same money earning mechanics and yet they worked way better.
