That last comment about some parents who are just going to bow out and tell their kid to find another hobbie. I saw that with my own eyes with a friend of mine. I happen to be at our LCS and my friend entered the store with his teenager. He was hoping to buy him some basketball cards, this was last summer. His dad couldn't believe the prices, the variety and the fact that they didn't even have loose packs. Store owner told him to buy into breaks. I heard him say "you're just going to have to find something different than collect cards. this is crazy!" and he walked out .

Spot on. It’s about the breakers. The days of us normal people trying to get any decent cards out of a normal pack is way gone! There is no middle class. You are either pulling 1/1 RPA’s or you have trash base cards worth nothing.
@870543weeg

You hit the nail on the head with this one. Fanatics is fueling the breakers and repackers and then steps back and says it is the secondary market driving the price. In 2018 I has at the National and you could find higher end product everywhere at reasonable pricing not this one. If the market were truly dictating the pricing then flagship and heritage hobby boxes would be selling at half what they were this year.
@ryanbauer8317

Fanatics is still butthurt about Topps Chrome Hobby Boxes last year shooting up from the affordable for the average collector $125 to $200 because of the National hype. They saw $75 of lost profit potential per box as a major negative, never mind the $80 of profit per box they likely made on it. Now they're just pulling strings and seeing what they can get away with until people run away.

Honestly, I think what they're trying to do is price up the flagship product so that they can introduce lower tier products beneath it. Look at Big League baseball as an example. I happen to like Big League, but I don't want another even cheaper brand to come in underneath it.

Great points totally agree. Like, they probably know the majority of the hobby are the "silent collectors", but are trying to maximize revenue while breaks are still big. At some point, breaks will get slow their pace and give up market share, and then Fanatics/Topps will pivot. They're not going to reduce wax prices until they need to, even though most of us wish they would. Thanks for another great vid!

I listen to your show and think you do a good job bringing up relevant points in the hobby. But I wish you’d stick with your positions during discussing. Example: ‘Breakers dictate the high pricing (which is true), not John Smith in Wisconsin buying a box, etc. But…maybe sometimes John Smith does influence it’. Your overarching opinion is clear throughout the video, but just a thought. Thanks for your work.

If a new product is inaccessible 1 second after it becomes available... it is inaccessible to the collector. Boycott all licensed products in 2025 until the following changes are made. All products are equally accessible to all consumers (ie random draw), require all products to be sold at the original retail price from the manufacturer for a period of 12 months and address the CT Scan issue... until then boycott.

Topps and fanatics only care about their margins and profit. They will never give a hobby box 1/2 price, let alone provide discounts to us the consumer. 2024 chrome baseball hoppy went up how much this year? I don’t expect them to care about us as long as breakers keep buying. Wait until you see the prices of topps football. Sticker shock inbound, mark my words. 😂
@natehunt1033

Seems to be lack of long term vision with both companies (Panini/Fanatics). The other issue that seems to be not as clear is what does this mean for long term value. You have high retail prices combined with an enormous supply (variety of product has increased 3x in 4 years, rough calculated print runs are approaching highs). Seems like a recipe for a bubble and maybe this hobby has turned cyclical with these long term licensing agreements (e.g. Fanatics taking on the football license next year). Either way, long term value looks to be headed toward depreciation from a business perspective. Eventually someone will end up with a lot of unsold inventory. In the meantime I'll keep scooping up the scraps from the breakers. Let them spend money on packs and reap the reward of singles at historical low prices.
@RedStorm1383

That is a great idea on how to say thank you to loyal customers however Topps/Fanatics doesn’t give a shit about that type of buyer. All they care about now are the breakers who are going to get them their biggest and quickest stream of revenue.

Let’s face facts, before now a scalper would walk into Walmart or have special deal with the vendor and buy every box at $20 a box and then scalp them for $40 a box. Topps just got tired of seeing all that product going to scalpers.

Of course Topps and Panini are embracing the breakers. I’d like the next steps in the hobby, to be subscription service. (I know people don’t want more subscriptions) BUT, it’s one of the only way they can get hobby stock to customers at different tiers. Have different tiers from weekly/monthly/quarterly that range in price. Give those customers first access to higher end product (on top of subscription) with a limit. I’m done fighting for FOtL or Chrome that sells out in minutes. I’m a customer with money, but I don’t want to pay 2x the markup with breakers. I just want to order product in advance. It’s 2024, it shouldn’t be this difficult.
@montana01
Ай бұрын
The other reason this is important… no way do i expect high end breakers, not to scan boxes/cases for hits. They’ve got to figure out a direct to customer solution. I don’t see low end being scanned, but hard to trust breakers/hobby shops even.

It's quite simple - Have $20 dollar retail options (Silver Box) available for the public and those can consist of base, and maybe a couple of variations that aren't crazy chase cards. Have a $30 - 35 (Gold Box) That has a more variations that consist of the cards that are more desirable. You have to have a price point that an average parent will buy kids to keep the hobby growing. Any retail over $35 I'm not touching. First time in forever that I haven't bought 10 - 15 boxes of Topps Chrome.
