Struggling to topspin against a backspin ball/push?
-
-
Learning to topspin against backspin is a particularly difficult concept for most people starting to learn how to topspin.
-
-
One of the most common struggle is understanding that you need to beat a certain amount of backspin from the push.
-
-
More specifically, waiting for the ball longer (the ball has more downwards speed due to gravity and can meet your bat with more friction, friction=spin) and spinning the ball up/spinning the back of the ball to create spin and thus, arc over the net.
-
-
It is wrist and your dominant leg that really need to create an upward explosion on the ball as you brush the ball from bottom to up (hitting upwards on the back of the ball).
-
-
The most common misconception is that to spin the ball more, you need to slow your bat speed down. WRONG WRONG WRONG!
-
-
The reality is that your bat speed needs to be moving extremely fast, but with the correct muscles and you also don’t put the speed into a forwards direction whilst spinning up.
-
-
Lastly but far from least, you need to hit the ball in a thin way, you’re not looking to hit through the shot when you play a spin up against backspin.
