On the last day of our trip, we decided to fish the upstream section of one of the rivers. We have never been this far upstream before and because the river gets very narrow here, the only way we could get that far up is to use a log canoe that's less than 2 feet wide. Brian and I had to go in separate canoes as it just could not fit both of us.
The scenery upstream is completely different from the river mouth which we are more accustomed to. The river is extremely narrow with overhanging trees and fallen logs all around us. The tight space makes it very challenging for us to cast our lures. But if you get a topwater hit up here, it is guaranteed to be loud and explosive. As we couldn't cast far ahead of us due to the thick terrain, the strikes are usually in close range. The hits were so fierce and unexpected, they gave me a heart attack every time.
The upstream is where the Spot Tail bass live. I was not expecting to find monsters in such a narrow stream, but I have been proven wrong. Who would have thought a river as wide as a big longkang could produce such beasts. This is truly is an eye-opener for me.
