A torch test is a group of blood tests that are commonly performed during pregnancy to screen for a range of infectious diseases that can potentially harm the developing fetus.
"Torch" stands for Toxoplasmosis, Other (syphilis, varicella-zoster virus, parvovirus B19), Rubella, Cytomegalovirus, and Herpes simplex virus. These infections, collectively referred to as Torch infections can cause a variety of problems in pregnancy, including miscarriage, stillbirth, and birth defects.
It is important for pregnant women to undergo torch testing to identify any infections early on so that appropriate interventions can be taken to minimize the risks to the developing baby.
In this video, Dr. Manjushri Kothekar explains torch testing and torch infections in pregnancy in more detail.
