We'll be starting Kindergarten next year and I am so thankful to have stumbled upon this curriculum! Being a Christian I am honestly happy that it is secular and I get to decide how and when we bring in our faith. I love how inclusive it is. In literally crying because I'm so happy to have found something that seems to perfectly fit our style. (Could be the pregnancy hormones...) Thank you so much for sharing your perspective ❤️

Aww! I am so glad you found a curriculum that clicks with you! I l know that feeling of being so relieved and excited to find something that seems like it checks all the boxes and will work. I was so nervous starting out, but, honestly, finding this curriculum got me excited instead of being so anxious about it (and I know those pregnancy hormones well, especially at the kindergarten homeschool time with mine too!). I think so many people hear "secular" and turn away thinking it means something else, instead of understanding it really just opens up so many more doors and opportunities to include more people and more faiths. Please keep in touch and let me know how it goes once you get started!

OMG This covid19 been driving me and my wife crazy with public school unorganized virtual teaching, these teachers are putting assignments without teaching anything. I am ready to homeschool, I never grew up with anything religious so I was highly discouraged when every curriculum I looked online was religious based. I don't understand like is that the only reason people homeschool their kids? Anyways glad to hear about a secular curriculum for once.

When we first stated homeschooling a few years ago, a lot of people automatically assumed we were doing it for religious reasons and almost all the curriculums suggested to me were religious based. I was so excited to find Torchlight as I wanted a program that taught so many wonderful things with great literature. People can always add in their own religious items if they choose, but that was not what we were focused on when looking for an educational program. I know this time is crazy right now with so many challenges, so hopefully Torchlight may offer a great alternative for you!

Making sure I'm understanding correctly....this would cover social studies/history, science and music, and the parent would find other curricula for math and language arts? I have been using a different curriculum for the last 2 years and am exploring our options for next year. thanks!
@everydayimmotherin1393

Yes, Torchlight covers history/social studies, science, music, art, personal development and literature/poetry. Depending on the level, it would also cover other items like religion, cultures, etc. You would definitely want to add in math. If you are using one of the lower levels, you will need to add in language arts for spelling/grammar/learning to read. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have other questions!

We started homeschool this year with my first grader. So far we have done logics of english Fondation level A and B and working on C now. I just found torchlight we can't wait to start! I'm thinking about starting torchlight when we start Fondation D. Maybe you say in another video but how many days do you do logics and math during the week while also doing the torchlight curriculum. Also we have not been doing alot of history or science this year just a little ancient history and nothing about the human body. I'm thinking we should start at level 1?
@lanctotc

Do the levels build on each other? Meaning, if we are trying Torchlight for the first time, should we start with Level K and move onto Level 1? Will we have missed any important pieces if we don't start at the beginning? We have a first and third grader and are wondering if we need to start both of them at Level K and just move along at our own pace, if we should keep them both learning at the same level, or start one on Level 1 and one on Level 3.
@everydayimmotherin1393
4 жыл бұрын
Level 1 does not build on Level K, so you could skip that one and go straight to Level 1. For the following levels, they do build on each other in terms of History (Ancient then Medieval to Early Modern). If you want to keep them both on the same level, then Level 1 would be a great place to start and your third grader could always go more in depth or you could add in a bit more science. I also have videos specifically on the levels that may help if you haven't watched those yet so you can get a better idea of the reading for each.

Thanks for this video. I’m considering homeschooling my two daughters who are 19 months apart and I’m considering doing the same curriculum with them so they would be effectively in the same ‘year’. This eased some of my fears around that. I do have a question though that I’m hoping either you or another homeschool veteran can assist with - my main concern with homeschooling is that my kids won’t be given the opportunity to develop as much independence as if they went to school, I.e. the opportunity to spend time away from me and away from the family etc… is this a real concern? Does it matter. I would (and have already) enrol them in extra curricular activities such as sports, dancing, music, swimming etc etc… but am wondering on the impact of less independent time?

Many thanks for this review! It is seems like a very engaging, though-provoking curriculum. Do you think Level 1 would work well/ could be tailored for a 10 year old? Seems like Level 1 would likely be a good foundation for the later levels but not sure if it would be too "young" for him. Or I wonder if we should head to a higher level off the bat like Level 3 or 4. Appreciate your thoughts!
@everydayimmotherin1393
4 жыл бұрын
I think Level 1 could work well for a 10 year old and then you could always check out more books to really dive into a subject he is interested in. It would depend on your learner though and what he has already studied, but I know a lot of families do use this for that age. The only think I would consider supplementing would be some more science. You can take a look at my Level 1 in depth video to see what the actual reading looks like for a week and some more of the books to get a better idea! kzitem.info/news/bejne/xXmJupiGsIGoh6g

Hi! I am new to homeschool and have been loving everything I see about Torchlight. I have a 3 year old, 5 year old and newly 8 year old(2nd grade). I am curious if the the level K wouldn't be enough for my 2nd grader and if I should go with purchasing two different levels. Then I am nervous that I won't have enough time to do two separate levels!! I know you said you were going to be teaching both of your girls different levels this year, does it seem like it will be a lot? So many questions! Thank you :)
@everydayimmotherin1393
4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I think that Level K can certainly be enough for a 2nd grader. You can always add more books on a subject (from the library) and add more in the series for the series books. For that age, I would add in more science (just a book with science experiments would work!). If I was starting out with those age differences, I would probably have done that as well for my first year. Since I have already done Level K once, I know now that it goes pretty quickly for us (we did most of the readings on Monday morning) so I am more comfortable doing two levels. Of course, this is new territory with me also this year with having a pretty "wild" two year old running around in the mix so who knows how this will actually play out 😂. I think Math and English are more likely to be the subjects where the age difference would require different levels vs. Torchlight. With that said, you can always start with Level K for a month or so and then if you want add in another level! There is so much flexibility that you have that option as well. If you haven't yet, check out my level specific videos so you can see more details on the books and let me know what you decide to do and how it is going! Finally - don't be too nervous: you've got this no matter what it ultimately ends up looking like 💕
