@@jeffblydenburgh5938 and I disagree deeply and profoundly with your disagree. the vocals on the original simply do not agree with the emotion of the lyrics thenselves. @@jukeseyable The dissonance between the sweet, simple singing in the original is perfect for the lyrics. Life is dissonant. We are tone deaf to the suffering of others and cannot and will not bear witness to it even as we cannot come to terms with our own. Cries for help are met with silence. Consonance is all we're trained to hear and to respond to. I love both the original and the cover. Each performance has its own depth of message.

When I was pregnant with my one and only child, I listened to Tori and Leonard Cohen every day. She is 21 now and a musician now and songwriter. I made sure she learned piano, but she taught herself guitar. She graduated with a degree in philosophy and politics, and is getting her master’s in Public Policy. She wants to work for an NGO. BUT her first love is music, and she told me yesterday that she’s dedicating two days a week to practicing and writing songs. I have encouraged her to never stop playing. She said it’s her fantasy to just be able to play and write songs every day, but she is a realist. It’s her life- and I can’t blame her for wanting a “normal” career. She’s goiMy to record an ep soon and shop it around clubs in London!

@@shnootch I think in this case, it has to do with some shallow Christians attempting to label people like Tori as Satanists, because people like her criticize Christianity. My response to that is that it's important to have things out in the open and not to lie in fear of such people like Tori even if they are "Satanists". It is true that Tori is talented, and the best thing to do is to debate certain issues rather than cowering in fear and downgrading one's obvious musical talent. I have a pretty serious problem with shallow Christians myself having grown up with and around them. Christians who don't like Halloween, for example. I know of one family who won't let their son watch a single movie, not even a Christian one, because reasons. Tori knows what she's about. I saw her live back in September of 1992 during the Little Earthquakes tour. It was a smallish venue and I was in the fifth or sixth row, right side, pretty close to Tori and her piano. She sat just like she's sitting in this video, legs askew, and her eyes constantly scanned the crowd. (She met my eyes several times, but as she was under hot lights and most of the crowd was in the dark I'm not sure how well she actually saw any of us. But she tried.) As a performer she wasn't what I was expecting at all. Given her vulnerable lyrics and that aching soprano I thought she'd come off as shy and distant, even damaged. Anything but! She was warm and supremely confident, without a hint of stage fright. Her stage patter was bold and amusing...I remember her telling us a funny story about a sexual awakening she had while looking at a poster of Jim Morrison when she was young. Her performance was flawless, too. She didn't sing a single note off key.

This is exactly how you do a cover. The first problem with many covers is the song choice, and once facet of that problem is the risk of covering an immensely iconic song that truly "belongs" to the original artist. This scenario for covering often ends in disaster, and yet Tori aced it. The second point is general criteria for an excellent cover: a fresh, new spin, adaptation to produce the covering artist's true style, and backstory: personal connection the song and possibly even portraying a new meaning than the original has. Check, check, and check.

Oh, the early 90's when Tori Amos was the sexiest woman alive. My heart was broken by a girl, I had my new driver's license, Tori's "Little Earthquakes" album and Smashing Pumpkins "Disarm" on repeat in my car, Marcus Schenkenberg's abs were everywere and all the guys wanted to look like Nuno Bettencourt in Extreme.

I'm a firm believer that certain movies should never be remade or certain songs should never be covered... this was one of those songs on my list. Im sure this song has been covered by someone else but I havent personally heard it nor will I. I ran across this on a "voice coach reaction" video. It was Tori so I wanted to see it. I had a moment... a hard moment. I couldn't finish that video and had to find the unadulterated version. This was totally hard to get through.... but it gets 100% of my support. I dont think anyone else on this planet could or should pull off this song. She didn't try to cover it. She didn't try to remake it... she made it her own. like Cash did Hurt. Just not in the same way.

This song isn’t even the best song on Nevermind. Watch the Live version of “Breed” from October 31, 1991 at The Paramount. You can find it on KZitem. It’s one of the greatest Live Performances of any song in history. Their manager hired an INCREDIBLE video crew for $100,000 and it was worth every dime. It’s worth seeing.

She brings out the melody on the song by performing it this way...a lot of ppl put off this song because they disregard grunge as just screaming. This shows how talented Cobain was.

This is exactly how you make a cover of a highly successful song just one year after. By doing it totally different. I remember first time hearing Amos' version and just laughed out load. So briliiant doing a piano based ballad of that loud rock song (which great riffs I instantly loved to play on guitar my self). Tori Amos is such a great musician, and God bless her heart.

I totally agree. Used to get funny looks from the record shop staff, when I'd buy a Bolt Thrower, Sabbat, Napalm Death etc epic and something by Tori at the same time. Love the energy and oh so subtle intensity from this lady. Her themes are so brutal too. Check out "Time does not heal" by Dark Angel. Two beautiful peas in a very disturbing pod.

@Dugganworks "After hearing this version, Kurt Cobain refused to ever perform the song again, stating that the way Amos did it was "the way it was meant to be done." Direct quote, man. Kurt liked Tori Amos and was flattered that she covered one of his songs. He said this outright in an MTV interview. Just because you think Kurt wouldn't like it, don't assume that's the truth.
