Y’all asking about her rasp and strain, y’all clearly need to understand that before recording this album, she hadn’t performed or recorded in a year so it wasn’t easy, and plus her voice has gone through a lot. Recorded so much for Unbreakable Smile, did lots of live radio stations where she sang and tonight shows, and the move sing, and CMON HER TOUR?! She went off on that tour and legit gave all of her self every concert. So yeah her voice is a bit tired rn, but let’s pray that it gets back to its normal self for tk3

I don’t understand people. I love that rasp!!!! It’s intentional! Raspy singer like Kim Burrell and jazmine Sullivan and brandy etc get me hype!!!!!! Keep it comming tori! (P.s why is everybody like she is tired cause of the raspy sound. Literally she’s been doing this forever.)

Xavier Martin I can’t say I always enjoy the rasp, but it fits the genre. But yeah, it’s definitely nothing new. Perhaps she made more of a conscious effort to minimize it when singing pop, but there hasn’t been as much change in her technique as many seem to think.
@Gameworks1407

It's not her rasp. It's her placement she's thin and shouty. Adding the rasp makes her sound strident and shrill. It sounds less intentional and more a decline in her muscle coordination in that range leading to bad vocal chord adduction.
@MrSkinnyJeanz3

Ive Mc Fallen she’s not thin because of her placement, she’s thin because she’s straining. she has always been thin and shrill in her upper range. like I said, there might’ve been more of a conscious effort to minimize the rasp and grit during her pop efforts but even with that, she doesn’t sound all that different. these issues aren’t new.
@BMEZY

MrSkinnyJeanz3 agreed.. Tori’s voice was a little husky and she’d do some intentional voice breaks for intensity, but this excessive rasp is clearly early distortion from her faulty technique causing strain. I’d also imagine that she probably sang more in the past 5-6 years than ever in her life. damage makes itself apparent in light lyric sopranos earlier than other sizes and fachs. two years ago even her D5s had clarity with more freedom than what she’s doing now.. She may be conciously adjusting to the more aggressive stylistic of gospel, but ‘rasp’ can be heard as early a G#4 and those long tones are usually ample and clear as a bell. She’d better get a handle on it too. Im speaking strictly from an analytical view.. Personally i enjoy the timbre on this album because it works. Musically she expresses her artistry in this music realm. she seems very comfortable and that makes for a good listening experience.
@Gameworks1407

@@MrSkinnyJeanz3 She's utilizing placement that Beyoncé JoJo, and to a lesser extent Gaga used during their early years. They all had problems with nasality and thinness. And all of them could barely produce volume on their mid-belts without getting extremely shrill vs a light soprano like Mariah utilized more volume easily, who in her debut had better placement. Tori does strain, and it's obviously part of the reason she's so thin. But it isn't just strain, since Christina also strains yet her voice doesn't thin nearly as much. Tori is a combination of strain + bad placement.

My goodness didn't miss a note! I personally think she sounds better now, but not analyzing it note per note as contradictory as it may sound. Love the runs on this album and the harmonies, it may not be as commercial sounding as her previous one but I think I like it more, althought I still haven't replayed it too much times yet. I find also surprised how you were the first one to upload this video, idk how but nowdays most channels have these videos done in a day, this shows she's not given enough attention.

It seems like most in KZitem's "vocal community" will never understand that singing isn't always about "perfect technique" but mainly an expression of oneself, their emotions and creativity; specifically when it comes to Gospel music, in this case. Sure the "rasp" isn't technically great, however it's an expression of the pain and angst most go through in life; and how we seek refuge and answers. For Christians (including Tori) we seek these things from our Saviour Christ but we might not always get these things at the time we want them, which can hinder our faith and lead us to despair, but can also renew our faith. This album is a musical journey, it tells a story; not a "clean and perfect" one because that's far from what life is. That's what Tori is trying to show, through her voice & songwriting (low notes, harmonies, riffs, runs, upper belts, rasp, falsetto, melody, lyrics etc.).
@Gameworks1407

Technique doesn't need to be perfect always. But repeatedly doing it causes damage and grows into a habit. Eventually it hinders her expression, because someone with good technique can easily employ a bad technique for a note or two, for the sake of expression. But someone with bad technique can never achieve the things someone with good technique can. Defending bad technique is just defending the laziness or ignorance of some singers, they never learned to do something without shredding their chords and now it's suddenly emotional.

I couldn't agree more but there's always a consequence. It's ok to use it but not all the time; no one has a perfect technique. Tori is one of the best vocalist in this generation but she lacks ease in her higher notes. She approaches higher notes like a mezzo (but will always slay every performance). Her tessitura is like a mezzo but yes she is a light-lyric soprano. Oh the fact that she can support lower notes than a usual soprano makes her voice sounds like mezzo-ish. Really confusing.😂 But yes, she is always improving! Btw, her voice sounds very mezzo in this gospel album. Very dark and full. And that's why I love about Tori, she's never afraid to try something new.😍
@Gameworks1407
5 жыл бұрын
@@damsapollo she really can't support lower than mezzos. I mean P!nk, Gaga, Miley, who's technique is lacking, and Barbra Streisand all support down to D3 consistently. Beyoncé and Aretha, who isn't even a mezzo, support down to C3/C#3 consistently. Tori supports lower than most sopranos though at Eb3 and keeps more fullness down to G3 than most sopranos with her tessitura, which starts at C4. She just seems to wanna lower her tessitura for some reason

This sounds like my favourite album from her. The range is very complimentary to her voice. Music and tone-wise sounds like something between JoJo, Beyoncé, Mariah and Gospel artists. I wish she'd edit her technique so her voice would be less forward and will enrich her tone. And mix a bit more to support her upper belts. Plus using head voice over falsetto would be preferrable.
