This version of Torn was recorded in 1996, and released on Trine Rein's album "Beneath my Skin". It was a big hit for Rein in Norway, Japan, and Denmark, and it also opened for new territories in various European countries. The track is produced by Phil Thornalley who wrote the song in collaboration with Scott Cutler and Anne Preven.
The original version was recorded by Scott and Anne's band, Ednaswap. A Danish version was also recorded by Danish artist, Lis Soerensen, called "Brent".
Later, the song was recorded by actress and singer, Nathalie Imbruglia, produced by Phil Thornalley. Although the two versions between Rein and Imbruglia are quite similar (possibly due to the fact that they were both produced by the same producer and writer, Thornalley), Imbruglia's success with the song made it world famous.
There was a major discussion about Torn being "stolen" from Rein during Imbruglia's success with the same song. Imbruglia did not do anything wrong by recording her cover version of Torn, but the media created a case of the fact that the two versions were almost identical. On MTV, they organized a competition between the two versions of Torn, playing the two videos back to back to have their viewers vote for the better version. Rein's version received the most votes - possibly due to the media hype of trying to put Imbruglia in a bad light - but at the end of the day, Imbruglia's version of Torn became the world famous hit.
Trine Rein's record company at the time, EMI Records, took no action during this entire process, and probably lost a major opportunity to break their artist on a much bigger scale than they already had...
