FEMA defines a safe room as providing “near absolute protection” based on their current knowledge of tornadoes and hurricanes. The ground-level wind speed for an EF-5 tornado is felt to be less than 250 mph. Safe rooms built to FEMA guidelines are designed to withstand the winds of an EF-5 tornado and occupants will have a very high probability of being protected from injury or death. This one is certified to be FEMA compliant. Better than crouching in a closet in the middle of the house.

I like the deflecto-matic technology in this shelter (it's round). That should help deflect debris, houses, cars, flying witches, and other crap that gets caught in tornadoes. I like it.

I would want something larger. that way I can just go to bed in the shelter and if the tornado hits unexpectedly, I'll be safe and sound.

Folks, New Day Shelters have one about the same size and about the same price but they use 3/8" steel. This one uses smaller 3/16" steel. The New Day shelter had been certified at Texas Tech to withstand F5 tornadoes.

Needs to be larger, even though debris would have trouble hitting it directly, debris will still dent it im sure therefore possibly injuring the person inside, smart design but needs to be larger

There are 12 bolt holes for standard RedHead Anchor Bolts into concrete. 3/8 inch bolts. These can hold 4000 lbs with ease so the total is 48000 lbs for the dozen. The unit weights 980 Lbs. It would probably take say 100000 lbs to rip the unit off the slab. Concrete weighs 4050 Lbs per cubic yard so you have to have it anchored to a slab with 10 cubic yards of concrete and not some small sidewalk short section. :)

I live in a rural country side and don't have any where to go. but open country. We bought this and watched them install it, I'm very satisfied with it. Specifically with nothing here and a bad storm shows up.

@@cowboyup545 so you have been in that thing during a bad storm? Because it really looks like it'll just get tossed about.

@bizotically_yours83 We used it once when a high storm was producing hale and winds at 65 to 70 mph. Not a problem. Didn't shake or anything. Lost a tree and some siding .

I don't like it and here is why...doors on storm shelters need to open to the inside..if anything lays against that door, you are trapped! Another problem is...its rated for 4 people? Not for 4 average sized over weight Americans it ain't adequate! My custom installed 6.5' x6'x6' shelter is large enough to hold gear for 3 adults, weapons, portapotty, and all the rest, with an inward swinging door, installed for $7500...not claustrophobic, and even bullet resistant to use as a home invasion safe room! This thing is a sardine can!
