These old machines are great if they get some love and care. If i want a brand new one here in Norway it costs 2500 dollars and that's all made of cheap plastic. Bought myself one of these for 50 dollars and have spent 100 on parts. I got it running. I also need to replace this bearing

@ethanlindsey also more tips: You can use the female end of a 3/8 inch drive extension with vice grips clamped to the other end it to loosen and tighten the set screws on the back side of the pulley. make sure you have the auger engaged when you put the 2 halves of the snow blower back together or the rubber auger brake might come off and you will have to take both halves apart again to put the brake back in place.

Great video, looks like i have the same exact machine but the bushing i got has a slightly dif style, it has a little grease fitting on it- had to check with ur vid to see which end of the ball goes up. I had a very hard time getting pulley off too, used a wedge tool (i think its usually used for separating tie rod ends), worked ok- PB blast helped. i welded a regular bolt to that square set screw to get it off, your 5/16 wrench idea may have worked if i had thought of it! taking key out was a pain too- but mig welder rescued me again, was even able to reuse :) just picked this blower up on craigslist for $200. hopefully can get some years out of it. Thanks!

@SuperColin1983 I just replaced the bushing on my 1986 Toro 724. I took a socket with a smaller diameter then the shaft (12mm 1/4 in drive) set it on the shaft then set a ~12in long piece of 2x4 on the socket and used a clamp on each end of the 2x4 to press the pulley against the 2x4 which presses the pulley off the shaft. I did not need to use any heat. I think most of donyboy73's problems were a result of using heat.

I just bought an 824 OE last year and it works great but I could see this bearing as a weak spot. Too much speed and load for a plain bearing in my opinion. So yesterday I removed it, drilled it out and put a grease fitting in it. I also drilled grease ports for the auger bearings.

Don, thank you for making and posting this video. (I'm replacing the same auger bearing/bushing in our Toro 824 Snowthrower, [1984, model # 38080]). Question, please: ¿can I use general purpose automotive bearing grease instead of the low temp grease (~2:30) you've used, please? (I don't have access to low temp grease, and would rather not buy a big cartridge that I'll likely not use again). Also, question about the anti-seize for the pulley to shaft interface. I see you used some 'copper' containing type (~4:53). I only have (Permatex Anti-Seize Lubricant 133A/81343, 1 oz tube) sold in automotive parts stores, made for spark plugs into aluminum alloy heads. ¿Is this good enough to use for the pulley to shaft re-installation, please? Any and all comments appreciated. Thank you very much, Don. tonyd\.

always helpful to watch! great job. i have a murray 5/22 older unit. the auger moves side to sdie quite a bit. is that play normal or could the bushings on end of the shaft be worn, and causing that to happen? PS: we had a our first snow fall here in the northeast yesterday

did you say that you pre soldered the pulley and bushing holder, before you had the welding done? I am asking because I wonder how you insured that the pulley was plumb with the bushing? Great vid thanks

Hello sir. On the 3 carriage bolts all I have is the holes and no slots to slide the bolt in. Do you think I could cut a slot with a small saw so that I can slide them in like you did in video? Thank you.

I just talked to a Toro mechanic and he states he's never had to replace one of those bushings. I thought replacing it with a ball bearing would be a better idea but I guess I'll just see if mine ever need to be replaced.

Don't believe him. They should have used a bearing not this brass bushing. If he's never had to replace one it's probably because the owners replace the bushings themselves.
