My older model (smaller engine) did not come with the front baffles and seemed to work for me. Try to mow in the afternoon (not commercial mower). Note, my transmission stopped working (would not push), so I drilled a hole in the transmission and filled it half full of gear oil (80wt). Thing took off and I needed running shoes to keep up. I think I will switch over to corn head grease sold by large equipment john deer dealers. Corn head grease very close to spec and cheap at eleven bucks a tube.

The blogging issue was mostly the original engine being unperpowered. When I had the Briggs engine one there it would bog down with even dry grass If it was too tall. I changed it to the Kohler command pro cv 224 and the engine bogging was partially resolved. That being said a large part of the bogging is from the deck being clogged. The only difference between the two engines is that the command pro would power through the deck being caked and the Briggs would stop. After removing the front baffle, I've noticed the engine runs wayyyy more smoothly and I haven't had the deck clog at all. I've been mulching rhizomatous tall fescue at 3.25 inches with leaves and I haven't had any issues. I am using Ballard gold blades and the airflow is sufficient. If you have a time master I'm asking that you take the front baffle off and test the theory. Maybe we can help a lot of others

@@atg4469I am about 3 weeks after spring fertilizer and seeding, so I will be cutting pretty tall grass when I get back home (minimum 6 inches). I will remove mine and cut at the highest setting first pass and drop it to 3” for my final passes and let you know how it goes on each.

@@atg4469follow up!! I removed mine yesterday, spent the day clearing the underside of the deck and applied 3 coats of EZ Slide graphite paint on the underside. Sharpened the factory toro blades and went to cut this morning. Dew on the grass and it was dang near a foot tall absolutely no problems I had a small amount of grass underneath same as yours on side discharge. One big note is the side chute is a huge hindrance as well I popped that off and tied the flap off with some fencing wire just to check. Throwing grass like 15 foot. No bogging no clogging!! This saved me!

Interesting. It may be due to the engine being underpowered; the exmark 30 and toro turfmaster do have the same deck, but different engines. The toro / exmark w the Kawasaki FJ180v is kinda underpowered like the Briggs on these, the Kohler powered ones w CV200 do a mulch better job and don’t hardly bog down at all no matter how thick. I also found that spraying some lube on the deck before mowing thick or wet grass helped out a lot, something like silicone lube spray or even wd40.

I agree with you 100% the first fix I did was replace the engine with a Kohler command pro cv 223. That helped quite a bit, but removing the front baffle was key. I'm gonna try the silicone spray today and let you know

@@atg4469awesome. Ya mean the cv224? That’s the one the scag sfc30 comes with. But that mower overall is like 250 lbs way to heavy imo. I had 2 Exmark 30s w the Kohler 200, and they were amazing but I moved on from them due to their weight, I got hurt and I couldn’t push mow for a while, and even before that my wrists / knees etc were taking a beating from handling them for years. I had 2x older 30s as well w the Kawasaki, one Exmark and one toro Turfmaster (older design w single handle), they were fine but slightly underpowered, the toro also was unable to really adjust the self propel on (which in those years was also undersized). The newer Kohler powered 30s have a trans that is like double the size of the older ones and it pulls amazing.

@@BigRedServicesLLC Oops yes, that is correct the cv 224. My transmission works fine with it I don't have an issue but it is a lot noisier so I eventually was going to switch the the Turf master transmission once it broke.

Along with the new tranny I put on this summer, after replacing my motor (looks imminent), did I mention pullies, the belts don’t count….

Lol! I've been there brother. But after doing all of that the mower can literally be used commercially and it will run and run and won't give up.
