Thanks for the video! Mine wouldn't work until I disassembled it and added the drops of oil you recommended. Now, it's working great.

Thanks for the video. I realized I need to really press the gear shaft to the base until clicked. I lubricated everything and now it works fine.

*Great* video showing assembly! I am curious ~~ I've been trying to figure this out but haven't posted anywhere else yet. When I print this model (on X1-Carbon, with OcraSlicer, "default" settings for PLA, Bambu cool plate) the gears (worst case) are frozen and cannot spin, and I've broken them trying to free the center to spin, and in my best case so far: I can take pliers and work the gear loose so it spins. How can I print the model so there is a bit more space and not be frozen? Is there any slicer setting you do that made it be a lot easier to get the center to spin freely?

Thank you very much for the kind words concerning my assembly video. I did not run into the specific problems you are describing, so I'm not really sure how to deal with them. Maybe the designer of the model (Brent Peterson on Makerworld) can help you out.

Normally this is due to thermal expansion and is worse with lower quality filaments in my experience. One way to normally fix this is by making the print larger so something like 120% scale might fix your issue. If this doesn't fix the issue another way is just using the default slicer (Bambu Studio). If none of these work I would buy something like Bambus' filament. I don't know what filament you are using and if you are using bambu filament then try one of the first two options. If neither of those work then idk.

I had a similar problem. For me it turned out everything was printed perfectly. I was "setting" two gears on one side of the ring and then closing it on the single gear on the other side. What was happening was that the first two planetary gears were actually on or two teeth too close to each other. So when it tried to spin the would basically bind. It took me a lot of fidgeting (I worked with the single ring just to practice the technique. You can also use the flats and ridges on the outside of the ring for guidance. Once I had all 3 planetary gears equally spaced inside the ring I could spin with two fingers and it would coast a bit beyond that. If it doesn't do that, you may not have it lined up. I made two of them and had the issue on both of them. Once I assembled correctly they work fantastic.

@@techringo6469 I freed mine with oil but after a couple of rotations they lock again requires more force in another direction is that similar to your problem?

@@techringo6469 same - I lucked out and the first one I printed slipped together perfectly and was smooth. The second one I printed was stiff and I thought it was the different color fillament I used so I printed one in the original color.. Same stiffness.. Finally dissasembled and fiddled with it. I think you can get the planetary gearsets 1 tooth off and they kinda work but are really hard to turn. So - just fiddle with it until it all slips together and spins with little force.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned another launcher worked better with higher acceleration which one is that?

I was referring to the more commonly used "rack and pinion" launchers for toroidal propellers. makerworld.com/en/models/82443#profileId-87869

With printed gears it's recommended to use lubricant (grease rather than oil) on gears teeth, too, to prevent quick wear.

For this model, it made no difference to me whether the gears were lubricated with grease or not. If it has helped with your build, there's no reason not to do it.

@uhltimate It's only that the grease is more lasting than the oil. The important part is to use it on teeth, too. But for sporadic uses you won't notice a difference. My advice was more in general.

The pins will not go inside of the round gears on the wider side. They basically need to be hammered in and broken. This was printed on an X1C with calibration on.

What brand lubricant do you use?

You can use the lubricant that is used for greasing the spindles of the 3D printer. I have used a bicycle oil.

Hi, i am not using a glue but a lubricant, to make the gears turn more smoothly.

I'm not sure if I got mine together properly. It's really hard to turn. Hurts my thumb trying to grip it tight enough after only a few tries. No way my kid will be able to use this.

I had the same problem. For me, disassembling it, adding drops of oil to the center hub of each gear, and reassembling it did the trick. Good luck.
