Omg I literally love this video and I have never heard of toroids until you made this video. I feel so blessed that you make videos like this. I am learning so much by watching your videos.

Thanks for the video!! I would love to see more content on all things "3D poi". Toroids are an elusive beast that I have been chasing for a while now, but have made very little progress in.

I love toroidal work and 3D in general. There's a bunch of awesome stuff out there in the soup of potential but folks aren't willing to do the work and discover all the dope aspects of 3D. Watch a 3D spinner irl and you'll understand the appeal. Screens can capture 3D like our eyes can.

I think a lot of poi for the past decade and a half has been constrained because the primary medium by which it's communicated is online videos. They tend to flatten everything down in such a way that there's not a great reason for doing a lot of 3D work. Sometimes you do get outliers (I love shooting videos with a gimbal because it definitely allows me to explore the space around me a lot more) but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. 3D spinning in person, though, is indeed fantastic!

Well now I just have to start drilling the Z plane and not just switching between wheels and walls. (Yes, yes, while z is actively bending...) Well it's not like that's going to require remapping of my physical attunement of/with my surrounding space to a completely different foundational set of motor skills... Oh wait, it does... ((Grappling with the daunting nature of this challenge seeing as how my current practice is still predictably linear and the switch to a model that requires visually seeing the volume as a point density range... Nerd stuff... About two weeks given my current flowbility... So now I basically have to move Z plane bending up to first practice to relearn how to spin... Again.

Incredible video. Ive been working day and night over the last month on breaking down some concepts for toroid based exercises, and in a way people can learn them. I returned to spinning POI, and was baffled that practically everyone has moved to juggling and contact type spinning. Funny that you should post this now 🤣

I'm interested in seeing toroid tutorials. It seems like a fun drill technique and if there's a few tips to make it easier that would be nice. Though I have a feeling it's drill, and drill some more. Thanks!

Yes, please, more toroids content. Toroids are cool. I have been vaguely drawn to plane bending and toroids over the past month but didn't really try to look for content intentionally until now. Can you good people put some links to your favourite toroids/3D patterns videos and tutorials and moves?

The use of this term I'm familiar with is a specific mesh orientation of tethers that Arashi is fond of. It's basically Together Same, but one plane is set at 90 degrees from the other and it's notable for incorporating moments of both separation and togetherness in the poi but in such a way that neither the tethers nor heads can make contact anywhere in their path. But again...not sure if that's what this comment is specifically referring to.

Word! I use Isobends all the time. Especially with pendulum patterns and stacks. I can get probends to look clean sometimes & I think look best above the waist line imo. Antibends I can do without… Perhaps I just haven’t spent enough time finding the right pocket or pattern to use because they are so hard for me to fit into a flow.. but I do admit, they do have this type of a type of optical illusion of sorts.. especially from the side view as you have displayed here.

Oh antibends are one of my favorites! I'm glad you've found uses for probends, though. They were always the hardest for me.

I've added them to the practice list ever since watching you bend the path of a five point star so that it condensed the light trail for a viewer/camera. I thought that was a brilliant idea when you get what that path is tracing in 3d. I've not been drilling it consistently though because I'm still working on more foundational skills. Soon enough.

That's definitely one of my favorite toroid patterns and I wish the pattern was more visible without long exposures. I'll try and post some more videos covering the basic techniques behind these soon!

@tempMentive

It is. Part of a concept I've been working on, when you flip certain directions of spin, stalls are applied (but don't necessarily have to be).

Really good video, it's very interesting to see people's different perspective on toroids and how you can apply them in your flow etc.. I have an introduction to some shapes you can do with toroids in different timings and directions, more research videos are gonna come on my channel so if you are curious you can check it out🤗
