+1. While Jason did a tremendous job explaining it, this model is really well done. Love how the arms of the toroidal unit - that was the only part giving me pause in EE's video and it is a pretty magnificent design as implemented here. I wonder if Nissan/Jatco brought Torotrak's design for use in future Nissan/Infiniti vehicles.

If you're wondering why these aren't common in different vehicles, it's because the company entered administration and has been dissolved / sold since ~2016 or 2017. Investors lost interest when the pure electric car became common, which is a huge shame because this could have been amazing for a variety of reasons

To improve conventional motorcycle fuel consumptions, this could still be important. Especially since the development of electrics is not as fast/as active in this segment as in the car industry.

No you didn't. This was never released, it was a project by Nissan and NSK and it needed a special oil to about it breaking by the huge wearing caused by friction.

One thing I find interesting is that this type of transmission could have a PTO output if it were put just in front of the rear axle of a truck, where the output gearset can shift out of gear and allow the engine to run in neutral. It would allow farmers to tow things with their truck as usual, in a low gear at the peak torque of the engine to save fuel while doing so, but when they need to they can hook a bit of farm equipment to the hitch and plug in the PTO shaft to power something like a windrower, or a seeder, or something. A truck could become a tractor if needed, and of course the tractor would also benefit from the CVT. Its smart, and its a really good idea alongside PHEVs for the decades it would take to shift the world to full-electric, and even then biogas vehicles would always have their place no matter what. I think Halo ironically had it right, the hydrogen-powered Warthog is a combustion-powered vehicle and that is always very useful for lightweight long range vehicles.

I only hope that the contact fluid for traction between the discs is effective because if I rely on my snow blower, (of course my snow blower only has rubber as a contact point) at some point this principle will slip over time.

Could not they do something similar with gears ? I mean, the gear would have the exact shape so the small pivoting disks always have a good occlusion in the bigger disks.

Tbh I think this type of transmission wouldve been way more reliable than the conventional steel belt configuration. This set up looks way more confident and stronger. I am also here because of the Nissan Toroidal CVT

There's other types of CVT, but that's a great tech because it allows the engine to run at either maximum power or maximum efficiency regardless of the speed of the truck. You may still want a separate crawler gear for high torque though.

my question is how do you keep all six rollers perfectly synchronized (at the same angle) otherwise they will be working against each other, if there isn't something automatically self-correcting in each individual roller actuator it seems things will get out of whack soon, and the thing will first loose efficiency and eventually wear out prematurely ???

Try switching to a fully manual gearbox. 2x less consumption and an incredible level of control over the traction with a clutch you control with your foot. Tedious for city driving though.

What happens if you chain some of these together? Would you end up with something close to an IVT?
@sleeptyper

If one unit has gear ratios from, for example, 1:4 to 4:1, chaining two would mean 1:16 to 16:1.
