Toshiro Mayuzumi [黛敏郎] (1929~1997, Japan)
Dance of Golden Branch from the ballet "Kaguyahime (Princess Kaguya)"
Haruhi Hata [秦はるひ], piano
Recorded: April 26 & 27, 2016 at Radiant Hall of Ninomiya Town Lifelong Learning Center, Kanagawa Pref.
In 1948, Mayuzumi returned to Japan and surrounded himself with many professional dancers. This later led to Jane Burlow, an American dancer who performed Setsu Asakura's directing debut for set design, commissioning for the ballet music from a scene of "Princess Kaguya" be made into a independent piano solo composition. At that time in the Japanese ballet world, famous composers Akira Ifukube and Yasushi Akutagawa were in charge of much-discussed works for ballet music and presented one after another. The "Dance of the Golden Branch" depicts the scene with Princes Kaguya issuing a challenge to the men wishing for her hand in marriage. She told one of the man to bring her a "Tree branch that sprouts gold," but he instead brought an elaborately made fake golden branch. Because he did pay the craftsman of the golden branch the proper amount of money, the branch was exposed as a fake, ending the scene. What sort of music do you think was create for this so called "trembling waltz" ?
References about the ballet "Princess Kaguya" still remain in Yoko Kono's diary stating that in the fall of 1949 Mayuzumi and a colleague read through the libretto of "Princess Kaguya" and exchanged their thoughts on it. However, for some unknown reason, this ballet was not performed. Only a piano sketch still remains today. On January 28th, 1951, only the piano version of this piece was broadcasted on NHK radio while the other parts of the music have not yet been found. Later on Mayuzumi was commissioned by the New York City Ballet to write "Bugaku," and also later worked on "The Kabuki" and "M" with Maurice Béjart. Because of this "Princess Kaguya" is noted as an important stepping stone for Mayuzumi's later ballet music.
