Right as he was coming to his peak as a film star, Arnold decided to revive a script which many others had failed to succeed with before. Total Recall, the action thriller taking a construction worker, Quaid, on a confidential mission across planets to topple tyranny. Quaid has to battle his enemies both physically and psychologically as he determines what’s real. The film was a big success in 1990, earning over $260 million at the box office. It wasn’t afraid to take risks and differentiate itself, with memorable scenes like the triple breasted woman and arms being severed. It stayed true to Robocop director Verhoeven’s vision and had many gruesome and dark scenes, ultimately earning an 18 rating. The film is based on Philip K. Dick story, ‘We Can Remember It For You Wholesale’ was written by Shusett and O’Bannon originally, with Goldman providing touch ups. The film also has a strong cast, with Michael Ironside, Sharon Stone, Rachel Ticotin and Ronny Cox featuring. Along with Jerry Goldsmith providing a fantastic soundtrack. Of course, being a Schwarzenegger film, the dialogue and action won’t disappoint, although the plotline is very strong here also. It is evident why this film was able to make an impression and earn its plaudits. Hence why here we’ll look at this film and discuss its strengths and weaknesses, to appreciate what the film offers.
