Actually, I have found that it can be made a lot easier by holding Britain. It´s tough at the start, but well worth it ultimately, because it protects Iberia and Africa from the northern tribes, who usually focus on Britain first. The African Provinces are not that difficult to hold, because Roman infantry and town structure are both ideal for defense. As for your other borders, abandon the region east of Italy (Pannonia?), but hold your line in France. Try to persuade hordes to take one of your regions. It will stop them from moving, keep them at peace with you, and they will even take care of your rebellions. When your front has been stabilized, you can send a few armies to destroy them at your leisure. From there, it´s just a matter of slowly conquering everything.

@@AndysTake Also, if you can, try to build Imperial Libraries in your rich provinces, mainly Italy and Africa, while you still can (you lose that ability as you advance your tech). Basically, if you can build 5 Imperial Libraries, you get a 100% research speed bonus, which is absolutely insane. It´s especially useful to get faster access to the technologies that reduce corruption and increase taxes and happiness. You get a huge advantage over the other nations, and won´t really suffer on the military side, because all you need is Legio and Comitatensis Spears.

Attila's campaign really does feel like the best iteration of the Total War formula at least in terms of difficulty. Every other Total War game to date just is waaaay too easy and trivial on the overmap. They should lean more towards its standard for how public order/sanitation works in future, but I doubt they will because people will complain.

Attila was my first Total War and pretty much the only one I’ve played. I do think the overmap is too complex. Having to remind yourself to deal with Diplomacy, Politics, Public Order, Food, Squalor, Agents, Building, Technology and only THEN your army, is a bit much. Too stressful. Not to forget all the minute upgrades to armies and characters. And there’s so much more unnecessary bulk. Perhaps if the UI would lend itself more towards these things, make a better overview. Oh and that’s without mentioning the horrible controls on Total War games in general when it comes to battles. Maneuvering units in the way I want is pretty much impossible.

Yeah, back in the shogun 2 and rome 2 days, I used to occasionally use the "use agents to ferment a revolution, let the rebels take the province then take the province from the rebels" strategy to snipe regions from other nations without declaring war. I've tried the same strats in the newer warhammer games... it's basically impossible. Even for the player, it's generally hard to get to the point where public order is an issue, and with the AI cheats, I barely ever see AI with less than like +15 happiness per turn.

The campaign is more interesting in terms of challenge and objectives, the atmosphere and cinematics are just superior, even to Rome 2 (that I love as well) I have an advice for every person who wants to play a very good immersive strategy game : just go and play it ! don't listen to those who prefer to play campaign where nothing happens nor those who don't like it because "romans are weaker" (they are so strong and cool to play btw) :)

Attila is still pretty unique, in that by playing the any of the Roman Empires(especially western), you have to throw out everything you know about playing 4x strategy games. You start at almost max level in size, this is where other games would deem you victorious. But forget about it, you cannot save your outee provinces, they will get sacked, razed and conquered, you have to know what to give up and where to concentrate your thinly spread armies. The legendary difficulty is much about the player getting their mental mood into this sort of defeatist attitude at the very start. And this is hard since most strategy players will destroy their own faction immediately by putting their armies against the large barbarian hordes at the very start. In this game you have to learn to lose first, then when you have been pushed back to smaller but more easily defended positions, then you can start building armies to take back what you lost.

It's really just the perfect point in history for a game like this. There's the corpse of the Roman empire, you can either reanimate it and restore it's glory, or be one of the many factions looking to take a bite of it for yourself. There's the nomadic factions, shaking up the static total war settlement-hopping formula. And then there's Attila's faction, putting constant pressure on everyone and exacerbating all of these scenarios. The fact that you can play any of these from any of the different sides is astounding. I think Attila was just released too soon after Rome 2

The game mechanics of TW: Attila is so unique, intriguing and fun. You basically have this huge world map where it feels like the world is coming to a bleak apocalyptic end because to the lack of food due to the continuous shrinking amount of arable land, and what arable lands that remains is fiercely contested among every faction who is all racing to secure said lands for themselves. Overall, the goal here shifted to just bracing yourself for survival rather than eliminating or subduing everyone else.

For me, the game is not great. The corruption system is like its better to let the enemies take your land so to improve your economy? What? The food system is basically unrealistic, Italia would never EVER grow enough food to sustain 1M people locally, thats why they always import their food from bread basket like Egypt. And Roma has always never be able to feed itself and still they are the economic centre of the know world. And yet you have to eat -15% economic output is dumb, the public order is fine tho. The AI rarely if ever settle down, in my campaign the Deutsch literally raze Frankreich to the ground and never capture anything, they just sack, raze, and only cares about Britain for some reasons. The Huns are Mary sue on steroids, kill them once and they come back with machine guns on horseback, the game never inform you to stack wipe the Huns or else they would come back with Hittler’s chainsaws, turn Ravenna into saving private Ryan and the summer offensive combined while Attila is in Byzantium, CHILLIN. And that with just the WRE.

I like attila more then rome 2 cause you can been like wolfpack, hunt then burning or sacking then leave XD. Hun are really badass and cool. Rome 2 are good but if rome 2 have attila system would have more good game experience for me. I play and love both anyway XDD.( Visigoths from attila and Baktria from rome2 ) Thank you again. This video are truly great. Hope more people come see this video.

Thank's for this Andy and all other reviews you post. Great work! I thought I'll give you a hint on a absolute outstanding Attila mod, "Ancient Empires". Others has "rewied" it, but it deserves a deeper analyzes and a lot more attention. After playing TW games since Medieval (yes the first one) and a huge bunch of mods, I have rarely been so impressed. AE is just more intelligent in almost all aspects. I have played the DEI mod for Rome a lot, and thought that was the greates one. But now I feel AE actually surpasses it.... Of course it is hard to tell. One have to play an awful lot to be certain that a mod behaves for all factions etc. But watch out for this one, it seems to be something special.

I'm getting sick of Public order decline. No matter how hard i try sanitation, food, greek christianity on top religion, nothing works. As soon as i leave the province, public order goes down. Rome's glory peiods are honestly better covered by other mods than Ancient Empires. I want that mod to work so bad, but the performance in battles are just awful sadly. AI being ridiculous and battles being laggy to very high degrees are two of the major problems. I would recommend FIRST TRIUMVIRATE mod instead. That actually works.

Will I get a constant 60FPS+ with my rig? CPU - Intel I7 10700k Mobo - ASUS Rog Strix Z490-E Gaming Intel ATX Motherboard GPU - Gigabyte 3080 Gaming OC RAM - 16gb Corsair Dominator Ram 3200mhz Based on your response, I will be buying or not.

Hi, Jamie! No, sadly, you won’t be getting a solid 60 fps. You have an amazing rig, and can probably run it better than most, but I can’t guarantee that, sadly. However, Attila prefers Intel CPUs, so you might be in luck. If I were you, I would totally check it out though!

I loved playing the new Persians online my friends are like dude we should take the Roman’s out I said we need to take our time with Rome, in time I said what’s the rush, I have white fucking Huns near my doorstep. I said the best my vassals can do is slow down the movement. Of the hun army until I send a probing force followed by an ambushing force to lure them away from my allies. They said how can you defeat their shock Calvary with just basic units? I said I’m leading them to the river their is a river bank with only two ways in just hope you don’t encounter a flanking force they said. I said even if I do re-enactments depending don’t get deployed quick enough. So I gambled my entire campaign into this battle one misstep is the end for me. I said they said best of luck. So I did what I said lead them away from my allies they followed near the river bank separating the two armies away from its mother migration tents. And yea faces off with two armies on the river bank. I mean it’s quite realistic, I stopped them from being able to use their shock Calvary they didn’t flank me they sent their men into two directions most of it was slowed down by my two spear units on the other side and most of them got wiped out by my main force as they came across the other side to meet up with the reinforcements the long way lol while I demolished their forces I simply went across the other side and repeated this process with just spear and slingers with only a single row of Calvary which I then sent to the other side to clean up the arches. I destroyed the Huns in 10 turns. Would of been more if I had set backs. They are like dude fuck I said I know my spear infratry wouldn’t had held out much longer and ranks would of broken if the calvery didn’t run first even with a front on attack they were something els. I would not have defeated them properly in open field at all with their speed and with basics unit in the field, without research I mean I could of at wha cost though the Roman’s I focussed on allies and vassals to probe the Roman’s forces then scorched earth some of their farming provinces which forces the person to actually downgrade other settlements in order to keep up food supply. This tactic is effective in the campaign as I realised they will send most of their forces against you but if you have players online the process is quick an easy ambushes are easy as I always keep a probing force an another in ambush, mode as their spies only see one army, always assassinate spies so they don’t uncover your ambushing army. Lead Rome on a constant chase don’t occupy scorch earth and occupy don’t face then directly especially online players not until you have upgraded, as you can control their movements and where they will go next. Take out ports food production first as this will force people to spend money to upgrade farm settlements and take their attention away from standing armies, takes them longer to build men cost then finances on the campaign. Which it turn takes away money for forces chances of rebellion in the empire is certain through how many turns the biggest struggle in the campaign is power within your own families, make sure to always get the support of lower supporting generals within your faction always discredit the ones with higher support include adopt them to strengthen ties sfter their power has been lowered or make sure loyalty is up.

There's only one thing missing in Attila and that's the hold position button. Its hard to control battle lines in a big battle when your units suddenly chase a retreating enemy units and then the most annoying one is when your missile units goes to the front line and you need to reposition them again. For me it makes the game unrealistic.
