This was very refreshing to watch. You beat your opponent in a number of ways. Advanced tactics, counter-force (cavalry to their lack thereof and of spear men), and simply by having the superior force although thats a tough one cuz Roman Legionaries are very powerful. I really enjoyed the move where you feinted to go after the ballistas with your citizen cavalry and then massacred his archers.

A Phalanx of spears would always crush swordsmen. They couldnt get close enough and spartans carry swords when their spears break. Phalanx to Phalanx Macedon or Athens has an advantage straight up with extra long spears.

Thomas why do you talk without knowing shit? from what you say it seems like the only sources of information you have are from games like rome tw or stupid movies like 300.. you are probably one of those spartan fangays that talk without any real study behind.. use your brain, why do you think phalanxes stopped being used after a while? why rome was so effective against them? phalanxes were effective only in very limited circumstances, and often it was easy to out maneuver them. just go study the wars between rome and macedon and you will understand how much phalanxes were outdated by then

Just throwing this out there, but I think a way to buff the Spartan Hoplites is to give them the ability to draw swords, the pro to this is that they will be able to "hold" their own against infantry. The con would be less defence because they wouldn't be in phalanx anymore with swords drawn

Okay so I have been thinking about this for a while now. I know that the game is not entirely historically accurate but it aims to have as much accuracy as the game design allows for. What gets me is how they have made hoplites the key defensive unit for the game which I do not get why that is from a historical stand point. History shows us that they are not defensive unit. The men of the Athenian Phalanx charged the Persian line like their lives depended on it then did the work of slaughter to preserve their imperfect democracy. I understand that Rome's key is infantry and they need to be strong but seriously I think the Phalanx has been misrepresented from a historical stand point in Rome 2.
@TemenosL
9 жыл бұрын
willmo42 You're right. History does show us that the hoplite phalanx is *not* solely defensive. Hoplites fought other hoplites long before they fought other soldier types, and if rome 2 had us believing they were primarily defensive, those battles would go nowhere. The phalanx I think, has been misrepresented since rome 1, but in terms of effectiveness, from what I hear it's been entirely butchered in rome 2. Phalanxes, in my view, certainly did advance toward one another and as such cannot be viewed as defensive only, though they'd perform well in defense. As for marathon, precisely how much they ran is debated, though it can't be argued that hoplites are a static defense troop type regardless. Here's some nice quotes from wiki on Marathon. When the Athenian line was ready, according to one source, the simple signal to advance was given by Miltiades: "At them".[50] Herodotus implies the Athenians ran the whole distance to the Persian lines, shouting their ululating war cry, "Ελελευ! Ελελευ!" ("Eleleu! Eleleu!").[76] It is doubtful that the Athenians ran the whole distance; in full armour this would be very difficult.[82] More likely, they marched until they reached the limit of the archers' effectiveness, the "beaten zone" (roughly 200 meters), and then broke into a run towards their enemy.[82] Another possibility is that they ran up to the 200 meter-mark in broken ranks, and then reformed for the march into battle from there. Herodotus suggests that this was the first time a Greek army ran into battle in this way; this was probably because it was the first time that a Greek army had faced an enemy composed primarily of missile troops.[82] All this was evidently much to the surprise of the Persians; "... in their minds they charged the Athenians with madness which must be fatal, seeing that they were few and yet were pressing forwards at a run, having neither cavalry nor archers".[83] Indeed, based on their previous experience of the Greeks, the Persians might be excused for this; Herodotus tells us that the Athenians at Marathon were "first to endure looking at Median dress and men wearing it, for up until then just hearing the name of the Medes caused the Hellenes to panic".[76] Passing through the hail of arrows launched by the Persian army, protected for the most part by their armour, the Greek line finally collided with the enemy army. Holland provides an evocative description: The enemy directly in their path ... realised to their horror that [the Athenians], far from providing the easy pickings for their bowmen, as they had first imagined, were not going to be halted ... The impact was devastating. The Athenians had honed their style of fighting in combat with other phalanxes, wooden shields smashing against wooden shields, iron spear tips clattering against breastplates of bronze ... in those first terrible seconds of collision, there was nothing but a pulverizing crash of metal into flesh and bone; then the rolling of the Athenian tide over men wearing, at most, quilted jerkins for protection, and armed, perhaps, with nothing more than bows or slings. The hoplites' ash spears, rather than shivering ... could instead stab and stab again, and those of the enemy who avoided their fearful jabbing might easily be crushed to death beneath the sheer weight of the advancing men of bronze.[84]
@willmo42

If anything in Rome 2 the Athenian hoplites armor is represented well because there was more wealth during that time period allowing for citizens to buy nicer, heavier more protective armor. That being said they still don't last long against the cost effective Roman infantry.

I've never understood how swords beat a hoplite phalanx. The spears out-range swords and the wall of hoplite shields should be difficult for swords to get through. In that sense, I think Rome 1 did a better job with hoplite units.
@TemenosL
9 жыл бұрын
***** For other reasons, I don't think rome one did a wonderful job with the hoplites, but I agree that their efficacy, at least, was higher in Rome I. I personally believe hoplites overlapped their shields and fought overarm with spears, and even so the spears would out-range their roman counter-parts by at least 4 feet, *and* the density of spears would be high compared to that of roman swords up close. It'd be a very tough formation for the romans to face head-on, and they'd be very well protected too.
@rdizzlethephilosopher9755

Because a phalanx is immobile, a more flexible legion could crush a measly phalanx. The Roman's rotational system ensured that there were always fresh troops to face the enemy. Plus, the phalanx was only good on flat, even ground where they can easily charge the enemy head-on. Battles where 2 opposing armies just run at each other in the open is nothing but a stupid Hollywood myth. Plus, Roman pila could break a phalanx formation or at least render their shields ineffective.
@TemenosL
9 жыл бұрын
Sharkworld Very nearly everything you just said is bullshit. Let me quickly sum up what's wrong about this. 'Because a phalanx is immobile' - False. No form of phalanx in existence is 'immobile'. 'measley phalanx' - If you think a phalanx is Measley you have no idea what a phalanx is, and you need to restart your 101 classes. 'The Roman's rotational system ensured that there were always fresh troops to face the enemy.' - The rotational system is nearly mythical. Please cite your sources for this, as most modern theorists agree that doing this is relatively difficult to pull off, especially during enemy contact, and that there is little evidence for this. Ironically, this is closer to Hollywood myth than you think. Read this and educate yourself before you run your mouth off. www.romanarmytalk.com/17-roman-military-history-a-archaeology/211781-battle-line-rotation-during-the-combat.html Tell me how a soldier conveniently turns his back to an enemy soldier that he's engaging so that he can shuffle to the rear. The answer is, while fighting is ongoing, this is basically impossible. No one wants to turn their back to the enemy right in their face. You need a dose of realism. Is it possible? I think it certainly is. During the fighting? It's a *lot* more risky than you imagine. Shuffling out an entire unit might make more sense as well. 'Plus, the phalanx was only good on flat, even ground where they can easily charge the enemy head-on' - Finally, something I agree with. A hoplite phalanx was best on flat terrain, yes. It doesn't mean they're entirely useless without it at all, that's an exaggeration. 'Battles where 2 opposing armies just run at each other in the open is nothing but a stupid Hollywood myth.' - Two interesting points. Firstly, who here in their right mind is claiming that two armies simply 'ran' at each other in big mobs? No one said this. Secondly, ironically, it actually does explain inter-Greek hoplite warfare relatively well, at least theoretically. Each force would line up opposing one another and advance into contact. This is a fact, it's literally a documented understanding we have of ancient inter-Greek hoplite combat. It was somewhat ritualized. 'Plus, Roman pila could break a phalanx formation or at least render their shields ineffective.' - They might. This matter is still kind of disputed, to be honest. Have you video evidence of the Roman pilum both penetrating a shield and also by the weight of it, bending, rendering the shield more difficult to use? Is this a documented function of it, officially, (by users of the pila). Because the last I heard it is more likely, primarily a penetrative heavy javelin, the 'rendering shields useless' bit entirely dependent on how it's foe attempts to remove it. It's not so black and white. Hoplite shields aren't moved around very much at all when they're in close order in a phalanx. Putting a javelin hanging on it won't do very much at all because the shields pretty much remain static and overlapped throughout the entire contact. The aspis also rests on the shoulder and so frankly, it's not as big a hindrance as you imagine. For a more mobile shield, it would be a much bigger hindrance. - All in all you're looking like a Roman elitist fanboy, pulling speculative theory crap from the internet and acting like you can talk down other methods of fighting, the effectiveness of which is historically indisputable.

in a phalanx men where grouped together,the romans would first soften up the phalanx with their throwing spears,then as the phalanx would try to regroup, the romans would charch,remember the romans where clad in steel and iron,the greeks used bronze,which is much weaker,could take far less punishment then there counterpart
@pheonixsheppard9012

Peter Hargraves You are mostly right. Greeks wouldn't separate under skirmish fire though, them and the Romans used the same shield wall tactics. Truth be told, the Greeks were out smarter by the Romans, but Greeks tended to out soldier the Romans heavily at even combat. The game has it wrong. I think an individual Roman soldier could take a Greek soldier, but there's no way they could beat them unit to unit without Calvary.

Don't Sparta have Spartan Pikes for online battles? I don't play online matches as I don't have the organisational skills to be quick enough to do what I want, but for offline battles, the Spartan Pikes wins me most battles. I just put them in tight and deep formations, and they can stop anything. Then I have skirmishers that do all the killing. I use light missile cav to distract enemy cav and skirmishers. It's a slow tactic, but very satisfying. Again, not sure how this would work online.

Amongst the best, yes. Spartan Hoplites, their mid-tier frontline unit, happens to be one of the best value spear units and Royal Spartans are an outstanding elite spear unit. Vecois Pikes are as sloooooow as molases. a pike army cannot outmaneuver any other type of army, A pike army needs to take the initiative or at least act along directly against the opponent moves, because if the enemy army took the initiative it's just a matter of time before you get outflanked. Of course this only apply if the opponent is a decent player

What's the difference between Hoplite, spear men and pike men...?
@SinerAthin
10 жыл бұрын
Hoplites are more organized I guess, a little tougher than basic spear men. Pike men got big spears, so they can keep the enemy at a distance.

hoplites are well armored spear warriors that are very strong in their tightly packed phalanx formation but are pretty easy to flank, but very strong from the front. pike men use 20 ft Sarrissa spears in a complete "spear wall" phalanx formation, this way they are basically unassailable from the front but are pretty much screwed when you get around them. spear men are just simply warriors with spears and typically large shields.

Even thought sparta was not a wrold power they could win and sparta would do a beter job at thermopolyes because they dont retreat,surrender rome would get crushed no matter what :D no way sparta would lose

You realize rome decimated them in real life right? And had rome been in the battle of thermpoylae, i gaurantee they would have won whole handedly

+Kasie N/A Battle of Thermopylae was 480 BC whilst the Marian reforms happened in 107 BC. 300 years is a long time for technological and strategic/tactical development. It's not exactly muskets against machine guns but you can think of it that way.

Are you that stupied? Rome is very powerful against Sparta. Rome had superior equipment and strategic plans. They may not have been trained from kids but they were very powetful military wise. Dont make remarks like "They were trained at a young age, to become soldiers." That means nothing. Spartan's are not greater than Romans, check your research one day.

Lol I get some tough matches from players. Those are usually the ones I show myself on here losing to :) Lots of players online are new. Over time though they will get better and hopefully more tough matches will come

Sparta is kinda weak in this game, their lack of good cav units and sword infantry brings them down, athens or epirus is more useful if anyone here is thinking of using greek states faction
