The fact the driver is being asked to pay 40k should make you think twice before renting a car at the ring. It's a massive turn off tbh. And in the other hand if you afford taking that risk, you afford to buy a pretty nice sports car yourself…I get the ”you only live once” point but still, it’s a hell of a risk to take. I’m guessing most people don’t really understand how high the excess is even though it’s very visible on the price list. I'm sick of people making a big deal that "look, airbags didn't deploy!" and in the same time people get out of the vehicle on their own, almost unhurt., no matter that the whole car could look like a piece of scrap. Airbags needs to deploy when it's needed - it can be with the initial impact, it can be with the second one or even if there is a third - but only if needed. If they deploy with initial one, no matter if it's needed - then they will be useless with a potential second hit from another car for example.

And for a racing-type service company a claim like that could result in termination of the insurance contract (after the pay-out), certainly a second claim like that and it definitely would. The company's insurance is effectively limited, by the common sense decision not to claim for a crash like this, to third party liability, and of course it's a legal requirement. This is exactly why I would never rent a car at the ring, 40K would ruin me financially for years to come and my salary is nearly 6 figures, all to drive a car for 3-4 laps? For that risk you might as well just buy a Porsche Cayman and just enjoy it casually and take it to tracks which don't eat cars like its breakfast. I understand it is your business model but who can spare 40K for a silly mistake and couldn't just buy a car like this? At that point you might as well lease a car like this for 3 years and learn the car and its handling on a safe track before you slowly take it to the ring. I get that crashes like these don't happen every week with APEX cars and the risk is still relatively low, but even with the low risk the potential of being liable for 40.000 euros, it just turns me off, I don't want to ruin my financial future for the next 10 years because I want to do a few laps on the ring, screw it i'll stick to iRacing and Assetto Corsa and pay a deposit for a house. To me this just shows that driving the ring with a nice car is just never going to happen for me, which is kind of sad actually...

@@mgcharoudin first of all let me say this is not me saying you shouldn't be doing this, I love your videos and I have been watching your videos for over a year now. Also nothing against the whole idea of renting cars at the ring, its a great business idea, but the insurance just makes this non viable for me personally. I just looked again at your price list and excess list, for me even making a comfortable living, 8,000€ is definitly a blow I would feel, that would take me 12 months to comfortably pay-off without having to compromise my immediate level of living, it would mean I would be making little to no investments towards my retirement and house deposit fund for the next 12 months. And yes the risk is relatively low, I have driven an F-type before, I have been on other tracks with relatively fast cars 200-300hp, but I just wouldn't enjoy the ring like that, knowing that any small mistake can end up costing me atleast 8000€. Yes not every crash would end up costing that, not every crash is a write off, but it would be in my head every second of those laps, be careful don't crash it, be careful, oh another car shit please dont hit me or unsettle me. It would be nerve wracking and unenjoyable for me, which is stupid because I probably wouldn't feel like that if it was my own car. But a ring taxi definitely might be something to do once this whole corona thing blows over and you don't have to jump through 50 hoops to just cross a border. Again nothing against you or Robert or Apex, you guys are doing amazing work especially with the floods, it is just a bit sad that insurance for the ring has to be like this... Maybe you guys should look into charging a set amount for every lap which is your own in house insurance for these kind of events where the car is a complete write off, I can imagine you might have looked at something like that before, but maybe it makes financial sense?

I’ve seen cars written off with less damage. That gt4 took a big hit and even if it was fixed would never be the same again, they never are. It’s a shame the customer has lawyered up instead of accepting responsibility. Send them the bill for those things too…..

Pawning off all responsibility on the driver is harsh too, this will ruin them financially for years to come regardless of all those extras. I make close to 6 figures in British pounds (over 6 in euro) annually, I could go to the Porsche dealership around the corner from where I live and get a 718 Cayman GTS for 800-1000£ a month, which is expensive and it would be a definite financial splurge but if I wanted to I could make it work. I could drive this car for 2-3 years for the 40k that this is costing him. I am not saying that he is right to get a lawyer, that he shouldn't pay up, or that he even should have rented this car to start with, but Misha explained the crash, lift off oversteer, bloody hell that is such an easy mistake to make. This guy has been served with a 40k bill that would take me probably 3-4 years to pay off, I would get a lawyer too, what is the lawyer going to cost me 2000€? Screw it if I am ruined financially anyway for the next 4 years might as well make it 4 years and 6 months worst case scenario if he finds a way to make it lower. Its all nice to say take the responsibility, when it isn't you who is getting the 40k bill for 20 minutes of fun. Don't get me wrong, he should just pay up or declare bankruptcy which is probably cheaper, but doesn't this sort of show what is wrong with this business model? 20 minutes of fun and 4 years of nightmares, buyer beware. I commented it earlier, this video and the whole situation shows me that renting a nice car at the ring isn't worth the risk, unless you can afford to buy these kind of cars like it is pocket change you shouldn't do it, even the slower/cheaper cars. I get that this all is a business and at the end of the day a profit needs to be made, but at what price?

As for your example, not a great one… 1000£ a month will get in your driveway you crash it at 200km/h anywhere you won’t be covered by insurance so not only would you be continuing to pay 1000£ a month for something you no longer can use you’ll be paying off whatever you hit plus lawyers fees for the charges the police have hit you with as well. 35k is cheap in comparison.

This brings out a very important question anyone thinking of renting a car should be asking. How much do you have to pay if you bin it? Does the driver really have to pay €39k? I would have thought there would be some better insurance in place where they just have to pay a small (ish) excess and you claim the rest on insurance? Apologies if this comes across wrong, I'm not trying to tell you how to run your business, just want to know how it works if you crash. For example when I test ride motorcycles worth around £10k-£13k I sign a waiver saying I'll pay £1k excess if I bin in, maybe £2k. So logically in the same scheme, the driver would have to pay €10k-€20k excess for this much more expensive car? I obviously have no experience with this so would appreciate someone clearing this up

The thing that I dont understand is why someone would rent a porsche and risk having to pay over €40k when u can easily can buy a reasonably fast car for like €15k. If u then total it, u would be also very bummed, but wouldnt be stuck with a huge debt, lawyers and all that crap. I drove my own car on the Nordschleife last year because I wanted to have experienced the Green Hell one time, but I took it reasonably safe and didnt drove on the limit. The risk is always there, but luckily I didnt get in any sort of trouble. Bottom line of the story is that if u want to drive fast cars on a race track, u need to have a lot of money..... Sad but true.

Man that's a lot of money... Dude should've just bought a clio or megane rs. I guess the people renting these have the headroom to pay for damages in case of accidents. I thought insurance would include low excess for peace of mind in such events. 40k screw up is a hell of a cold shower. Nice parts car.

I still haven’t fully understood the cost and insurance situation of the Cayman. Wasn’t it insured? Does the driver have to pay the full 40k or is his part capped by a deductible fee?

Robert spoke about rental car insurance a while ago. So they are insured, but apex opt not to claim in the event of an accident because their future premiums will increase. While I understand where they're coming from for say sub €10k bingles, to me they should make an exception for write-offs. Maybe that's just me though
@ApothecaryTerry

Either Misha or Robert covered it in another video (I vaguely recall seeing the Yaris). They've got insurance but I guess perhaps excesses are different if a car is totalled in their situation. Insurance excesses and things like barrier repairs all add up to a lot of money whatever the case, that's one of the reasons the 'Ring doesn't appeal to me since the barriers are relatively easy to hit (which isn't to say it's unsafe).
@Scientist12345678910

@@happybeerlove I believe they are claiming it. At around 11:10 he said the excess/deductible is $35k, that would imply insurance is involved. Their insurance is probably crazy expensive anyway and carrying insurance with low deductibles probably wouldn't be possible.
@HondaExige1
3 жыл бұрын
@@happybeerlove that doesn't matter. The excess (deductable) is 39k as Misha says. The driver is responsible for that either way. Whether Apex make a claim on their insurance doesn't matter except to them.

I think it's because they were on Instruction Laps. Germany Driving Schools can nearly get no insurance. If a driving Instructor is on the side, the deductible is much higher than in a rental case, because the Instructor "could have avoid the crash". But i don't understand why it's the clients problem.

I’m confused as to how the driver took on the liability of all the damages to the car to start with. Is there no insurance? Did he / apex not have a back up plan to cover his ass in case a mistake is made?

If you cant afford the car you are renting on the ring and cant insure yourself for damages on the ring while driving a rental then why bother renting? You may aswell use your own car. At least if you bin it you can do without the car and not have to stump up 100k in damages out of the blue.

Still a lot of potential costs involved, you'll get billed for damage to barriers, billed for any time spent blocking the track or any cleanup/rescue/salvage services required. Still makes me sad to see the Cayman like that, knowing that 2 days before the crash happened we were standing beside the car and making plans to go on a road tour with it, somewhere around this time now... For me last season was actually last DTM season. Today it`s just another GT3 series (like we haven`t got already about 20+ others). Class One was like superiority of Touring cars same as F1 is for open wheelers. I think they could e.g. get equal hybryd additional engine (about 120 HP) which they would add to regular GT3 cars, or just figure out any other thing that could give them that unique thing that DTM had. For now it`s like u got DTM, but there r many other series with the same cars but much more entertaining tracks like Bathurst, Nordschliefe, Spa, etc. No point to watch DTM anymore personally (like regularly, every race). I feel sad. Will miss that cars.

Interesting thoughts on DTM. While I understand the GT3 hate, as you say it was just too expensive to keep the championship the way it was.. even if you believe the current championship has nothing to do with DTM, you will have to accept that things could not go on the way they did the last few years. I can't deny though that current DTM is a weird beast.. I love GT3, but all 'DTM' seems to be right now is a combination of drivers, teams and a track selection. The more we step away from those drivers, teams and tracks, the less it will make sense to still call this DTM. It's great that experienced GT3 teams and drivers enter and plan to enter the championship, but it undermines the already frail concept that is DTM run with group GT3 cars.

With my eyes I saw the process of the Viper reconstruction and the cost of it and also a comparison with the estimate made by Dodge and insurer. No wonder people rebuild cars in their own garages, when even buying original parts from the manufacturer, even with the taxes can be 3/4 cheaper. This SH*T is made because insurer want money ASAP and prefer to sold wreck for pennies, than awaits 6 month to rebuild it...

I truly believe crashed cars are the core business case of a lot of Nürburgring rental companies. Maybe that's not the case with apex, but it has to be that way for some of them. Buy cars cheap, let them be crashed and collect the excess and insurance money.
@xothierryxo
3 жыл бұрын
The excess goes to the insurer, not to the rental company. Rental company gets reimbursed the residual value of the car or the cost of replacement depending on the coverage they chose. More claims means it will cost more to insure the cars next year, and ultimately more expensive rentals for customers. Nobody wins when there is a crash.

What's the point of insurance if he still pays 40 grand? When a car is totaled, the insurance pays you. Is insurance different in Germany/track? I'm sure the prices are different but the main point of insurance is to not end up paying 40 grand out of pocket.
@FireEye-zd4fm
3 жыл бұрын
true, but the way insurance companies make money is if you never need the insurance. The risk to crash on the Nürburgring is high and many insurance companies don't cover driving there at all. You probably could get an insurance policy with lower excess, but that might increase the price per lap by serveral hundred euros. Look at the flood situation in the area, do you think many insurances will cover those damages for new houses ? The chance of this happening again is high, therefore it will be very expensive or not even available anymore.
@xothierryxo
3 жыл бұрын
35K is way cheaper than 100K. Lower deductible means much higher insurance premium, which means the rental cost would be much higher. Would you accept to pay 2000 for one lap if the deductible was 500 instead of 35K? You get the coverage you pay for, neither Apex or the insurer are charities.
