‘’Africa’ takes me back to 15 or 16, and I knew, just knew, that in the upcoming years my whole life was going to change for the better, and that I was on the verge of becoming an adult. I knew that my world was about to become bigger and more expansive. And it did👍. Love this song

I went to South Africa in 2012. I arrived pre dawn, and a friend came to pick me up. We drove from the airport to Pretoria. It was one of those morning's where the conditions turned the sun into a neon pink ball. We drove through this 'valley' that had been cut into the land, while thousands of black workers trudged along the side of the roads, workers in the back of what you guys call pick up trucks (they call them bakkies), and my friend pops this into the CD player. It was sensory overload, I tell people it felt other worldish. An amazing experience.

In 2015, Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance.[12] He based the lyrics on a late night documentary with depictions of African plight and suffering. The viewing experience made a lasting impact on Paich: "It both moved and appalled me, and the pictures just wouldn't leave my head. I tried to imagine how I'd feel about it if I was there and what I'd do."[13] Jeff Porcaro elaborates further, explaining: "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."[14] So informed

So interesting that David Paich sings the verses but Bobby Kimball leads the chorus with Steve Lukather singing back up, just straight fire. Steve and Bobby sound so amazing together. I was watching some show on YT that had Bobby Kimball's long time manager/friend who is creating a documentary about him. Apparently Bobby has some sort of frontal lobe dementia unfortunately and is not doing well. The documentary will contain interviews with Toto members of course but also his good friend Mickey Thomas. I guess Bobby and Mickey used to be in a band together. Can you even imagine that? The documentary is supposed to be calls Kite on a String...that is how his mother described Bobby. I hope he is not suffering. All variations of dementia just sucks big time. Hard thing to watch someone you love go through it. For his sake, I hope it is not long. God Bless him for the amazing music he has made.

I am new to y'all's channel but I LOVE this song! I was about 6 years old when my teenage brother was playing this...the first time I ever heard it. So funny story one day it comes on the radio and I'm singing it in my brothers room and I thought in the chorus it said I bless the reindeer down in Africa....lol to which my brother turn around and promptly scolds me...it's RAINS not reindeer dingle berry...LOL. Thanks for reacting to this song brought back funny and cool memories from my childhood. ❤️

You can tell that you guys are good friends and have fun! Toto's second biggest hit is "Rosanna," from the same album, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was inspired by actress Rosanna Arquette ("Desperately Seeking Susan" with Madonna, "After Hours" and "Pulp Fiction"). Rosanna Arquette is the older sister of Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette (for "Boyhood" ... and "True Romance" and TV's "CSI: Cyber") and David Arquette ("Scream" franchise).

The rippling keys (possibly synthesized) replicate the sound of the 'finger piano' -- a typical west African instrument based on a gourd, and the sound of the shaker is almost identical to the bead-wrapped gourds typical of west African percussion. That's one of the reasons the song 'sounds like Africa' -- it's the underlying hints that give it the power to evoke the continent for people who've spent time there. Also: west Africa has a dry season and a rainy season. At the end of the long dry season, everyone certainly does bless the rains when they begin.

David Paich sings during verses and his vocals are a little worse than Lukather's and way worse than Kimball's but it's not what it's all about. It's the soul and the versatility of this band. I loved this track since I played GTA Vice City back in the day, many years ago. Powerful anthem, beautiful track and timeless classic. You should check out videos where people show the harmonies done on the chorus - it makes you appreciate and respect the song ever more! ;)
