"A doll cannot choose...They cannot *do* anything, they can only have things done to them." The chilling implication of the opening narration really imbues the story with a sense of dread as to what could befall the dolls, as borne out by the origin of poor PTSD-ridden Mr Plantagenet. A beautiful but brutal series.

I was so sad as a kid when she died BUT very clever way to distill loss into children. The final thungs will pass was quite powerful message to children. Wondeful series!

This is so charming. I’m sharing with my kids, hoping they’ll appreciate the thoughtful, well paced story telling style from days of old. ❤

Thank you for this! I do know there was a sequel to the story "Tottie: The Doll's Wish" broadcast in 1986, but I (and several others) can't seem to find it anywhere, the closest I got was a society in the UK that cleaned up a faded VHS copy and burned them to DVDs, however, they appear to be sold out: "There is a second series of five stories, made by Smallfilms, entitled 'Tottie and the Doll's Wish' but currently we can only find a faded copy of it on VHS from which to make DVDs - However we have spent a lot of time cleaning it up and it looks lovely! These DVDs are burned individually to order and are not packaged except with Tottie The Story of a Dolls' House _ but sold out sorry!" That being said, I might try writing to them to find out when they might have more of the DVDs available. As far as I can tell, no one else appears to have a copy of The Doll's Wish.

I now have a copy of this. I didn't realise each episode is so long, I expected about 5 minutes each one. Im 55 and I don't remember this being on when i was younger. I find the whole thing really quite spooky. I did see a glimpse of the marvelous mechanical mouse organ in one shot!

Love all Postgate stuff. This definitely has a dark atmosphere. Is Birdy on the verge of a breakdown?

Did they cut the birdie scene? 5-year-old me remembers seeing her dancing about on fire. 🤔

I don't think they did. It could be the image it made in your head as it's so powerful. Like people who swear they see Bambi's mother get shot.

Not to sound like a monster but I always hated Apple. Great memories of my childhood all the same.
