pretty much just lamp-black pigment and lacquer. similar to whats used in Japanese lacquerware. which is where it got its name. Im sure there are some other components in there as well. ive experimented with grinding my own lamp-black, but i cant get a good suspension in the lacquer, need oil paint mixing equipment to get a good mix probably.

You need Asphaltum which is an actual mineral also known as Gilsonite. You create a mixture of 50/60% Gilsonite and boiled linseed oil with turpentine. BLO 20% Turpentine 30%. Mix it well and allow it to cure for 24hrs. You want a thicker consistency so that the paint will stick to the sides of the plane in the oven and not pool. Think runny roofing tar. Plenty of videos on actual japanning now
