I think you should repaint the kitchen cabinets a color you prefer. Changing the cabinet style is a further down the line project but I think getting rid of the navy and choosing a color you love would help. Also changing out the hardware on them to be something funkier rather than the kinda sterile looking current knobs. Especially since you love creating meals and it's part of your job, I think that space should bring you joy!

I agree! And maybe a light color such as what your last kitchen had. I believe a light tone of blue (like the one on the top you're wearing in the video) would be a nice combination with the brown natural tones in the house, making it vintage looking. Colors in houses in the 70's is probably nice to look at, with a bit of candy color maybe.

I love the way you speak to Cosmo like he’s a functional being worthy of respect. Of course, he’s a baby so he has his limitations due to age/development, but you don’t talk down to him because of that. You also seem to give him tasks he’s capable of performing, with the expectation that he can indeed rise to the occasion. When you were asking Cosmo to fetch the picture, I couldn’t really tell whether you were talking to him or Eric, and I love that about your parenting style.

I completely understand how you feel about the remodeling!! Where we live people buy up these little historical houses and "flip" them by painting everything white and grey and putting in these overly minimal style designs that do not go with the history of the home at all!! We are currently trying to purchase our rental because its one of the few houses left that hasn't been updated. It needs so much work but I'd rather spend the money making it into something we love then pay a jacked up price on a flipped house that we hate.

I feel ya... the things you mention are actually really easy to create. Just a good neutral paint and different antique knobs/ handles can change the whole vibe. Then.. after sitting with that for awhile, adding some antique fixtures. I have lived in a ton of places... rehabbed many.... the cosmetic changes are very doable and therapeutic!!

I'm by no means an expert, but I've obsessively watched DIY-interior videos for years and I'm certain that you could DIY the kitchen of your dreams. Remove the upper cabinets, paint the lower cabinets as well as the walls, add open shelves, pots, plants etc.! Maybe you could get in touch with Alexandra Gater or book a virtual consultation? She's amazing at redoing spaces on a budget, especially when it comes to girly farmhouse spaces. And it would make for amazing makeover videos, which I'd love to see!

Hi Hannah! Fellow vegan California mom here. I initially was drawn to your channel because of your move to Boise from California. My husband and I have been going back and forth for 3 years now about moving to Idaho from San Diego. We even put multiple offers on properties/land in Boise and were outbid on all of them. We actually now are tinkering with the idea of the CDA area. I love your channel and I love design. I have a few suggestions to brighten up your space- have someone come in and spray paint your kitchen cabinets yellow and paint and/or wallpaper the wood walls in your house a lighter color. God bless!

I absolutely adore the Papillion and bats artwork together! So cute and eclectic feeling. I would also reiterate what others have said that painting and changing the hardware on those kitchen cabinets could give it a more feminine feel. Hardware is such a small thing, but it can really set the tone for a space. Can't wait to see what else you end up doing to beautify your home!

Hannah, thank you for making this video. I can so relate we moved from California to this big house in Alaska with amazing land. I feel so blessed to be here but really struggle with the house feeling like home because it’s bigger than I’m used to and built in the 2010s…which is SO not me either. I’m a lover and old, cozy and quirky too! I feel so spoiled feeling this way. But yes, home is where i am most the time (long winters and stay at home mom) and i want to love it!

The architecture in Boise was really hard for me, too! We moved from a 1940's cottage to a 1990's house. We did a lot of work to bring it into modern times, andI loved the spaciousness of the house, loved the lot sizes, loved the weather, but it's a fact that not many of the houses have much architectural personality.

Great video! I think a great temporary thing is to paint the cabinets and just get rid of the blue. You could whitewash them so you don’t have to worry about priming or a perfect job. Look for handles in your antique store too. Then maybe keep an eye out for people remodeling their kitchens and see if they’re selling their old cabinets. You could see if it works for your space and put some old back in for less money. Then sell yours so it’s not a waste 😊

Try bringing in some flowers in vases, feminine linens & artworks. I actually LOVE your house, but I understand your thoughts! I live in a house, in Australia, that is exactly what you're describing is your dream house. It's a 1930s cottage with volted ceilings & a cute little porch. But my tastes have just recently morphed a little more towards the "Australiana" vibe, & I can't really make that work here. We are allowed to change our tastes, sometimes it's harder than others. But you can totally make you're house a lot more feminine :) When in doubt, just pinterest "feminine mid-century modern" for ideas ❤❤

An idea for a cheeper way remodel the kitchen: You could buy old wood planks and make doors for the cabinets of the kitchen. Also changing the knobs to older or funkier ones (diferent on each cabinet, for example) also gives it the cozy feeling. I totally get the death feeling of new cabinet making and the love for the old. But I see if it is just kitchen and wc is an achivable challange. Good luck and fun with it! Patience and love is what makes it come alive with time. If it is really authentic can't be there from one day to the other. Love from Catalonia!

Similar situation. I, too, moved into a mid century house in a new community within the past year, (during the crazy market frenzy, tho we did see our house for 20 minutes before deciding to buy it) much bigger than the last, also with with 2 separate living spaces - a house that my husband adores, his dream house. (The house we left was my dream house.) I, too, am struggling to make this (much larger house with huge wall expanses) more "me", more comfortable. There is a lot of potential, but so much work ahead.
