I lived there..99th St. the circles.. I was 13 when we moved.. From what my dad said is that it was capped right. The schools 93 & 99. Plus homes had basements.. That permeates the clay cap.. That was the start of seeping up..

On top of that, the perfect storm(from what I've been told) the excessively bad and wet 1976 and 1977 years in weather coupled with the completion of the Lasalle Expressway. The expressway essentially turned the entire area into a basin as groundwater had no outflow any longer and the unprecedented snow and rain rates accelerated the whole thing.

This was pretty nostalgic for me, 99th street school was my first school. Left the city about 30 years ago and will be returning in about 30 days to take up residence once again. So much has changed too little for the better.

If I could 'like' this 10+ times, I would. I found this layman's type of Love canal clip to be so much more informative than ANY of the others. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I'm only sorry I could only 'like' it once. Very VERY informative and it held your interest.

Love this. Mike Dickman (if that's the older gentleman's name) and the linguistic ease with which he speaks and gestures, that's the lesson here. While somewhat lackadaisical on the facts, not the point; he demonstrates empathy for all parties--insight.

The government knew of the chemicals, but pierced the clay container more than a few times for the sake of fill dirt, and to put sewer lines in place. Then, by selling the land for development , they virtually asked for attention to be brought to the site. It was the government's shoddy handling of the waste land, and their concern for money over their constituents, that caused the ultimate Love Canal Disaster.

Very informative and helpful. Thanks for the publication of this interview. One note about "PCB's" however........the tour guide states that "PCB's" are no longer being produced. I would argue that that is not the case. PCB's (Poly Chlorinated Byphenals), are a recurring byproduct of used Hydraulic Fluid, which is still in use these days.

In fact the school board knew there was chemical there.Hooker told them and refuse to sell at first. Prior to the delivery of this instrument of conveyance, the grantee herein has been advised by the grantor that the premises above described have been filled, in whole or in part, to the present grade level thereof with waste products resulting from the manufacturing of chemicals by the grantor at its plant in the City of Niagara Falls, New York, and the grantee assumes all risk and liability ...

Nice video. One correction: LCARA re-sold most of the homes north of Colvin between 1991 and 1993. Most of the "new" Black Creek Village neighborhood was re-occupied by 1993, not 2004.

We have the Johnston, RI landfill which is HUGE!! It's on Central Ave in Johnston and before the landfill got to be where it today....there were beautiful homes on Central Ave & Reservoir Ave that are gone. I drove by there abt 5 yrs ago and it was eerie as they were all boarded up & ready to be demolished. All due to very high methane levels. Today, I looked at the Central Ave/Reservoir Ave in Johnston, RI on BING maps and all you see is driveways leading to empty lots.

probably is mowed by tractor or rider mower. There are many inspection wells around the site that monitor conditions underground, so workmen do go in their sometimes...how often I would not know. But it is monitored often.

this is accurate. it was NOT Hooker, they specifically said not to use the land. the only reason they even sold the land in the first place is because there were rumors of the city using imminent domain laws to take it. for once, you can't blame the "evil corporation" here. also, when Hooker did dump the chemicals, they did follow all the laws and regulations that existed at the time. there was a protective seal placed on top, they used sealed containers, etc.

The clay cap that lined and topped the canal would have stayed intact for decades if it had never been broached. The city also removed the 15' clay cap that covered the canal was totally gone. When they first began to build the school, they found barrels of chemicals, but rather than abandon the project they just moved the school. The City tried to pin it all on Hooker, but the city and the school board caused this, and later sold off land to developers that they knew had chemicals in it.

how many people do you know that do research before they buy a property? RE brokers, in CA at least, are required to disclose these sorts of things. then you have to sue people for fraud and that takes money

This part of the story is very well documented. We don't say that Hooker Chemical is a clean company and that they have nothing to do with the disaster. They Did put the waste there. But they also told the school board about it. And when they constructed the school they did find those barrels and they still decided to continue with the construction and to sell the rest of the terrain to developers. That in my mind is immoral and worst than Hooker attitude

I have drove through Love Canal. It is eerie. You can just sense souls that are trapped there. Never again will I ever drive through there. I dont give a shit about what this so called historian has to say about it being liveable now. You couldnt pay me enough to live there. I am sure the ground is still contaminated, How in the world would they be able to remove it all from the earth. Changing the name to Black Creek sounds like a way to trick people that are unaware of Love Canal to move in the area. They should have never reopened the area and allow people to live there. I always thought New York was screwed up but this crap takes the cake!

It's public record, you can look it up on the city of Niagara Falls water utility website. There's an entire list of companies that contributed to water pollution on the website, including the Hooker sites. The contaminates aren't present upstream in the Niagara River, but show up downstream by the time they get to the treatment plant, even more shows up by the time it reaches the homes because the pipes are getting old like many Rust Belt cities.

Interesting but numerous misstatements and inaccuracies (as presented by the comments listed below). The real story is far more complicated than this presentation. Today, this site is probably the most monitored in the world, and likely risk free. I would not concern myself with the chemicals still buried there. But the stigma is something else.
