The "Rail-Wheel Contact Simulator" at Center for Railway Research (CRR), IIT Kharagpur can be used for following:
(1) Test "Friction Modifiers (FM's)" to be applied on railway wheels/railway track to reduce wear, contact noise, and energy consumption
(2) Recreate conditions at railway wheel-track contact (pressure, shear stress, sliding speed, environment, etc.) in laboratory. This can be used to troubleshoot problems related to wheel-rail wear and rolling contact fatigue
(3) Determine traction-slip characteristics under different operating conditions (pressure, sliding speeds, environment, etc.) that help determine braking distance, conditions for wheel locking, and maximum traction that can be obtained
The "Rail-Wheel Contact Simulator" has six hydraulic actuators that can used under closed loop motion or load control. Very precise location control (to less than 50 microns) is being achieved on the machine. Normal load, lateral load, roll angle, roll centre, yaw angle, yaw centre, can be independently varied. Peak contact pressures of up to 1500 MPa can be achieved.
The "Reconfigurable Mechanical Loading Setup" can be used to do uni-/bi-axial testing of large suspension elements such as air-springs, conical rubber springs, coil springs, etc. in monotonic or cyclic loading conditions. Vertical, lateral, torsional and bending rigidities of springs/structures/joints can be tested on these machines.
Please write to "vikranth.racherla@mech.iitkgp.ac.in" if you are interested in using the facility.
