This model was my very first sewing machine. It was my graduation present in 1976! I sewed many many beautiful projects on that machine! Mine was an open arm portable, however, but I also received a very nice sewing machine cabinet/table with a surround that went around the open arm. My machine met its demise when it was accidentally dropped while we were moving to a new home. I still have that same cabinet tho, and with my newer machine today!

Welcome. IMO, the Singer Instruction Manuals were some of the best written. You can still download them for free from their support page here: www.singer.com/support by entering the model number in the search box. As an example, this is the results of searching for model 513: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513 If you select 513 and download it you'll get a 64-page PDF copy of the original manual. Singer manuals show the main parts of the machine and all the controls and how to use them. They have a thread/needle/fabric chart and show how to wind the bobbin and thread the needle and basic sewing on the machine. They usually have specific instructions for using any accessories that came with the machine as well as show some additional accessories. They always include a section for machine maintenance and oiling. When I get a new model I always download and read the manual so I know what the machine is supposed to do. Then during inspection I can tell if something is off or not working. Sometimes I've tried to download a model and there is noting in their files. This usually happens for some of the model made in South America and Taiwan. If they were not sold here originally they often have no records for them. They also stopped offering manuals for Industrial Models. Good luck, Susie, and thanks for watching my channel.

hi Andy! I’m worried that my bobbin pressure is too tight, the top stitches look good but the bottom thread is way too tight; do you have any advice on how to fix this? thank you!
@andytubesewing1953
Жыл бұрын
If you are sure it is the bobbin thread has too much tension, you can adjust the tension on the bobbin case. This is usually the last resort, after cleaning and adjusting the needle thread tension parts and trying lower top tension. When bobbin thread tension is too high the bobbin thread usually pulls the needle thread right to (and thru) the fabric. The needle thread can show on the bottom as a "dot", a small "v" or even a larger "V". When upper needle thread tension is too high the opposite happens. The bobbin thread is pulled up thru the fabric and is tight on the bottom. Here is a video of cleaning and adjusting a bobbin case for class 66 bobbins. It's an older style case and your machine may have the back plastic Apollo case, but the tension adjustment should be similar: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYprvo5rnouKeIY

Yes, changes to keep up with their compeitors, but many more moving parts inside. The feed regulator system seems more complicated then the the orifinal lever system. I have seen 100 year old Singers with feed regulator levers that work perfectly, and many, many Siners made in the late 1960's and later withvfinicky little parts that are worn out, broken and misaligned. The older I get, the "slotted" take up lever becomes more acceptable for some reason, hahaha.

Hello, Denise. I'd like to help but I need a better explanation of the problem. Did this just start happening, or is the machine new to you? Is the thread bunching up above or below the fabric, or does it wrap around and bunch up on the bobbin case itself? Thread wrapping and bird nesting can be caused by many different things, like tension, timing, thread clearance, bobbin winding method, thread-to-needle size, the timing of the check spring, etc. If you need a copy of the Instruction Manual you can download a FREE copy from Singer Support at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=513

It is just a thread guide to keep the needle thread lined up to the needle and eye of the needle so the thread does not flop and get tangled or sewn over. There are about 20 things that can cause thread breaks. Bobbin wound too tight or wrong style of the bobbin (class 66 plastic) or bobbin installed into the bobbin case backward. Bobbin winding video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/u4VproyQrYF4iZg The needle is threaded wrong and wrong threading path to the needle. A burr on the bobbin, bobbin case, or hook point that snags the thread. Tension unbalanced, like too much needle thread tension or too much bobbin case tension. I found a 513 at the thrift store today for $10 and bought it on a whim. I recently joined a Facebook group dedicated to self-repairing sewing machines so I was inspired to try to fix up an old machine myself; even if I fail I'm only out $10 and I will still learn something. This machine actually looks pretty good on the inside; not very dirty and things move as they should as I move the handwheel (I don't have a power cord yet). The only problem I've encountered so far htat I can't figure out is the stitch length dial won't turn. I was able to pull it off to clean under it, but I can't get it to turn. It's stuck with "7" at the top. Any advice on what's going on?
@sadiehopkins7984

I think I fixed it! Your video helped me pinpoint what part wasn't moving that should, and after using penetrating oil and a hair dryer and letting it sit and work I got the part to move!
@andytubesewing1953
6 ай бұрын
Nope. The dial controls the Feed Regulator that sets the length of the sitch. On prior models, there was a simple lever stitching out the arm of the machine from the Feed Regulator and you moved the lever down or up for stitch length and reverse. On these dial-type machines, there are about 20 more parts inside to do that and some are plastic and things can get stuck. The most common problem with this model is there are 4 plastic gears on the bottom to control the feed and hook systems and they start to break due to age. The first to go is usually under the hook b/c it takes the most stress, but if the gear for the feed breaks it can get parts stuck and nothing moves. The gears cost about 20+ dollars and can be replaced with patience and there are a couple videos about it in general. I have other videos for model 513 but not the gear replacement. kzitem.info/door/PLsCOZgzzaiKLELksv_-MWE7tiAuzOgQj0 I also have the parts and service manuals if you want a copy email andymanuals53@gmail.com and say hi to Alan and ask for the manuals by model number. Hey Sir. I Love your videos. Thanks so much. Do you think I can sew a small amount of thin leather on my 513? Any tips?

5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Dwight, You sure can sew leather with a Model 513, no worries. You can download a free copy of the Instruction Manual from Singer here>> www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/1154_513_0.pdf On page 10 there is a fabric/thread/needle chart that shows leather. Leather needles have a knife, wedge or "cutting" point instead of a regular "pointy" point. It helps the needle "slice" through the leather rather than pierce it. The needles are available at Walmart, sewing & fabric stores and all over the internet >> www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=15+x+2+leather+needle&_sacat=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=2032+15+x+2+leather+needle The Model 513 has a very adjustable presser bar pressure adjusting system so you can find a good pressure on the type of leather; slick, suede or fleece lined. If more feeding control is needed you can use a walking foot like this >> www.joann.com/singer-even-feed-walking-foot/6179857.html Instead of just having the feed dog pull the leather under the presser foot, the walking/even feed foot moves along with the feed dog, like grasping the leather above and below as it travels under the needle bar. Thanks for watching my channel, Dwight. Hope to hear from you again.

I believe one can purchase these but would you be able to tell me what size I would need for this machine although mine is a 507? Thanks for spending time on my channel. I believe I mentioned before I have no documents for a model 507 and have never even seen one. It is common for Singer to use the same parts on a family of machines, like the 5xx models. My 513 parts list shows the pigtail thread guide like what is in my video. Parts Number 319721-452 with the finish of chrome or #1055 finish. They called it the "Needle Clamp Body Thread Guide". It seems like it was hit or miss on whether the factory installed it as I have seen many 513, 516, 533, and 534 without the pigtail guide. I don't know anyone who makes it after 50+ years that the machine has been out of production. I think your machine will work fine without it but if you're determined to find one it will be a used needle clamp with the pigtail from a seller on eBay or ETSY or maybe Facebook.

Hey Andy, The plate on my Singer Model 513 Stylist keeps shifting and won't stay in place. Do you have any advice?
@andytubesewing1953
5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Caitlin. Bobbin cover plate? So it's also called the slide plate and bed cover plate too and it is held on the machine by a flat spring under the front of the plate (closest to you) the tips of the spring go into grooves down both sides of the underside of the plate. The spring provides tension to keep it on the machine, in place and guides the plate when you slide it open and close. If it keeps moving around on you, one tip of the spring could have slipped out of the grove, the spring tip could have broken off (can be replaced) or be bent (may be able to straighten). Also, the spring is usually held in place with a screw, or on the 513 I think it is twin screws, and the screw could be loose. That's uncommon but I have seen it. Here are links to some of my videos about the slide plates. This one seems the most popular, with 15K views so maybe look at it first: kzitem.info/news/bejne/oqSCsXZvfIKjoHo Then here are a couple more: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t6yllo6Eo5aBhYo and this one: kzitem.info/news/bejne/05WF06GDppyXf4o Keep in mind that sometimes the mounting screw that holds the spring onto the machine MAY have a set screw to it at a 90 deg. angle to prevent it from vibrating loose. Just saying, so if you need to tighten, remove, replace the mounting screw. It's been a while, but if you have a 513 model I really think there are two screws, going straight down through the spring, and no sets screws. If this doesn't help you let me now, and thanks for watching my channel.

Hi Andy - I inherited this sewing machine and the release knob won't move 1/4 turn counter-clockwise when I hold the hand wheel, I guess it's stuck/frozen. Is there anyway to loosen this release knob? Thanks D
@andytubesewing1953
4 жыл бұрын
I guess it IS stuck. Sometimes the parts get stuck together with old dried up oil. Stuck like glue. Sometimes the clutch washer inside was installed wrong and the small screw in the inner knob is jammed on top of a tab of the washer. So take out the little screw on that inner knob first. Lefty loosey. Can you turn the inner knob to the left now? If so you are lucky.✨ If not (like most of us) then we are looking at the stuck parts and here are a few things to try. We want to soften the old dried oil so use WD40 or similar if you have it and if not then use regular sewing machine oil. Put some into the hole where you took the screw out and try your best to get oil down between the knob, rotating the handwheel while dripping oil between the knobs. You can wipe up the extra oil later when you get the handwheel moving. It can help to use heat on the parts, like a hairdryer. You have to be patient sometimes. It can take a while. On a machine with a metal inner knob, I have given it a good rap straight on from the end to that little knob with a rubber hammer. Kind of shocks it loose. You have to be real careful on a 513 b/c the knob is plastic. It may help you to see what the parts inside look like so take a peek at this handwheel video. It is NOT a 513 but the parts types are the same idea. kzitem.info/news/bejne/l35juXitkX6Cd6A later in that video I explain how to reassemble the handwheel. clamp washer and inner knob. Once you get yours loose you may as well take it off and clean it before putting it back together the correct way. Good luck, Dionne. After 45 years the plastic gear/gears have started to crumble. There are 4 gears on the bottom of the machine, 2 drive and 2 hook. I do not know what repair shops in your area charges or if they will even replace them. I hear ranges of $110 to $250. They usually want to sell you a new machine. You can buy the gears for $20 and a guide to replace them for $11 to download. Then it's up to you to do the work or find someone who will/can. I think a couple-three hours with the guide and correct tools, normal tools. I buy my gears here, but there are many sellers. Look for Model 513 gears: www.vintagesingerparts.com/collections/singer-model-513-parts?page=1 (I prefer buying the 2 sets of white gears) and you can download the instructions from Terry at this link: store.tandtrepair.com/513gg.html If you use my coupon code he will deduct 20% off everything you buy from that site. I would not pay more than $40 here in Arizona, USA. Usually about $25 if a "not in current use" machine, and here is why. There are 2 belts in this model, a motor belt and a drive shaft belt. They can be old and worn. They may work when you try out the machine, but when used regularly they may slip and/or break. $10 to $15 each if you do your own labor. There are 4 plastic gears in this model. They get brittle with age and can crack and/or break. $8 to $10 each if you do the labor. It may not be realistic to believe buying a 40+-year-old machine that has not been used for years can be cleaned, oiled and put back in service. It is possible, sure, but if it needs 1 new belt and 2 new gears (about $30) are you willing and able to spend that money and do your own labor? When I restore a machine like this I sell it for $135 to $155 on Craigslist, no problem. I do not know where you live and if you have access to other models. My favorite zigzag machine is Singer Model 403A. No belts, all steel gears, very strong, takes patter discs if you like to sew designs, a direct drive motor. The last used one I bought I paid $50 for and spent $8 on parts and it sells for about $225 to $245 after restoration. Other ZZ models I like are (all Singer) 337, 338, 347, 457. They have belts and one has a plastic gear that is not hard to replace. They are still strong machines that can easily sew clothing and household goods. You can see videos of the machines on my channel by going to the playlist page and looking for the model numbers. kzitem.info/rock/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4wplaylists?view_as=public If you want information on these, or other Singer Models, you can download free copies of their original instruction manuals and read all about them >>www.singer.com/support here is an example of what you get (this is model 513) >> www.singer.com/sites/default/files/product_manual/1154_513_0.pdf If you want to inspect the 513, open the bottom and side covers (as shown in manual) and look at the belts and gears closely. The manual for the 513 says not to move the needle from the middle position when using a straight stitch. It would be nice to be able move the needle left or right when doing a straight stitch on a denim hem, so the foot centres on the middle of the hem and the needle is stitching the outside edge of the hem. What could be the reasoning for keeping the needle in the middle? Would it damage the machine? Could you get away with moving the needle left or right when sewing with a straight stitch?
@andytubesewing1953
2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean about the manual, and that seems restrictive to me. I have sewn with a twin needle on this model (see page 29 of the Instruction Manual) and had the left side needle against the left opening in the needle plate by putting the needle position on the Left with the control. Either left or center worked for a straight stitch with the twin needle with the center position moving the double straight stitch more to the right. Here is how I would verify that left or right position is OK for straight stitching. Remove thread from needle. Remove needle plate. (page 7) Put the needle in the Left position. Now turn the handwheel towards you while watching the needle go slowly down and up to see if it hits the feed dog or hook. Now try the same thing with the needle in the right position. I think it would work fine on both the left or right sides for a straight stitch. Also, some sewists do sew in the center position but use a zipper foot (page 42) for the type of seam you mention. The foot adjusts left or right instead of the needle. The newer style zipper foot is adjustable on a slide allowing how far left or right to make your seam while holding down the material. That gives the most flexibility for close to the edge sewing.

Do you have a video that explains the different machine series and how the features compare to other models and markets? I'm guessing the 401A was the Queen even though subsequent units like the 513 imply their higher numbers might mean better sewing machines. I now search multiple videos to try to infer their relative performance similarities & differences.
@andytubesewing1953

I do not have such a video, sorry. In general, I prefer the slant-needle machines 301, 401, 403, 404, 500, 503, although I feel the 401A (Cadilac) and 500A (Rocketeer) are over-rated. The slant-needle machines moved the needle closer to you and higher, giving a better view of the work area. They have internal direct drive motors and all-steel gearing (except the textolite) and use no belts at all. The 403A & 503A take top-hat pattern cams and can sew most of the designs the 401A & 500A can and do not have the heavy metal cam stack to bog it down. These machines are great in the drop-down style cabinets or table top. Other vintage machines that still have mostly metal but use belts and pulleys are 337, 338, 347, 513 which are strong, versatile machines. My very favorite traveling ZZ Machine is the Singer 353/354 Genie. Model 457 has a known problem plastic top gear on the verticle shaft that you can replace for about $10 (DIY) and it should last another 20 years and you can find them as cheap a $5 when the gear is broken. I have over 400 videos on my playlist page and the lists are by model number so you can review the model and see how it works and usually, I show how to restore/clean and/or adjust it. kzitem.info/rock/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4wplaylists?view_as=public There are other nice machines, like model 66, 15-90, 99K that are older iron and steel machines (think black w/ decals) but to me, they are too heavy even if they are strong machines. My current series is on one of the last all-metal machines from 1970 that is very popular. The model 237 weighs 28 lbs. Anyway, you can peak at the playlist and see if you like any of the models. There are many very good videos on KZitem to check out once you find a couple of models you like. Good Luck, and thanks for watching Andy Tube.

Hi Andy, You have such great videos! The reason we been watching them is that we just got a used Singer 513. We did some tests, all seemed to work fine. Left it turned on, went into another room, and when we came back five minutes later, we heard a noise, then it started to smoke, smelly chemical smoke. It seems to still work, but We wondered if the fact that the clutch had been blocked was not the issue. We had tested both sewing and the bobbin winder without realizing that there was a clutch problem. We are now cleaning and oiling it to cover all bases. Any ideas for the smoke? Many thanks again for your great work, Beth Austin
@andytubesewing1953
4 жыл бұрын
Glad you had not left your home! So the machine was plugged in, turned on but not running. Not a clutch issue. It sounds more electrical. The old oil stuck in the bearings and bushings can stink when you start running a machine that has been stored for a long time. The motor belt gets dried and flakey and tiny flakes rub off on the handwheel and pulley and can fall on the front of the motor. While running that belt can smell bad until all the loose stuff flakes off, but I've never seen it smoke. Back to electrical. The cords and wiring in the machine are plastic coated. I have seen cords cracked and damaged, especially near the "plug" you attach to the side of the machines. If the insulation is cracked they can start arching and sparking and the insulation can smoke and it really stinks. You don't describe the noise or where the smoke came from (maybe you did not see) but If the machine still works I'd take a close look at the foot pedal, like inside. It uses a long carbon disc "pile" or "stack' inside a ceramic tube as a resistor or rheostat. When you push on the pedal it starts to put electricity through that stack to go to the motor and the harder you push the more it squeezes the carbons so less resistance and more power/speed. When the pedal is out of adjustment it can be pushing a little on that stack and letting some electricity sneak through, but not enough to run the motor. The nature of the carbon stack is the less current the more resistance and the more resistance the more heat. At low-speed sewing, the pedal gets much hotter than at high-speed sewing. The carbon stack can get hot enough to melt the plastic bottom of the pedal and even catch fire! There is usually carbon build-up on the carbons (weird, right?) and black carbon dust can accumulate around the stack. I have a series of videos in a playlist about restoring your type of foot pedal. kzitem.info/door/PLsCOZgzzaiKItPLWcK24FBoMdHK8vTXNi You can glance at the videos and open the cover and just look and see if things look good or dirty or out of adjustment. You can follow the videos as a step-by-step repair tutorial if you like. When I test and adjust the pedal I will plug it into the wall and not the machine and test it for warmth/heat every 5 minutes. If it gets warmer than room temperature it is out of adjustment. If you do this test don't leave the room, OK? One other thing to mention. Rarely, a capacitor was placed across the wire inside the pedal to prevent interference with radio waves and such. They have not been needed for many decades, but some are still around. If that capacitor is failing it can definitely get hot, smoke, and man does it have a chemical smell. If you find one of these simply remove it. Definitely remove it! Hmm... I guess that's enough to get you started on your troubleshooting adventure. A project for you guys. The sewing machine detectives, right? Be safe, and thanks for watching my channel. P.S. @@andytubesewing1953 good morning Andy from France, The machine made a noise just before the smoke started. We have found other people’s stories where it appears that the condenser near the motor (not the pedal) is at fault. That is certainly where the smoke was coming from (near the motor - right hand side of the machine). Having looked all over the insides of the machine, we don’t see where the condenser might be, and can’t really say we see anything burned-looking, except for the white tape-like wrapping around the red filaments which looks brownish and scorched (?). Any chance that condenser theory inspires you? Can you tell us where it is? Hope that is the right word, going from French to English on a limited vocabulary of electricity and motors! @@bethaustin2993 If the capacitor was installed at or near the motor that explains why smoke was there and not the pedal. You can google pictures of capacitors. Here in the US, the type used in for sewing motors was cylindrical but they can be any shape. If the capacitor burned out it can "fail closed" meaning it lets electricity pass through. A capacitor stores electricity and on a sewing machine was meant to balance the current to prevent radio and TV interference. Here are links to a couple videos. One is a belt change for a model 513 but it shows the motor in place and some of the wirings from the terminal (where the cord connects) to the motor: kzitem.info/news/bejne/2K6J1piXk3R9nmk The capacitor could be near where the cord connects to the machine or near the motor. It is connected "in-line" for the current to go through it. Here is a video of that type of motor outside a machine so you can see what it looks like: kzitem.info/news/bejne/06aK35N4s2WhpXY Most of the capacitors here were in the foot pedal, but some from the 1930s & '40s were put at or inside the motor housing in a couple of models, like the 221. If you had already put oil on the machine there is the possibility that some fell on the open motor, but it would only smoke when the motor was running. I wish you had described the "noise" you heard, but anyway good luck.

I bought a 2nd hand Singer 513 and there were NO bobbins at all. I'm looking for the right bobbins. In the internet manual, the right product should be #172336 and on SewingPartsOnLin.com, it also says #172336 AND #172222 Class 66. I found similar bobbins (no numbers on them) but how can I make sure not to ruin my sewing machine?
@andytubesewing1953

Singer Model 513 uses Class 66 bobbins. The Singer parts manual shows part No. 172336 as you mentioned. The website you tried to list sells 172336-S and 172336. The -S is their way of identifying that those bobbins are Singer branded and not generic branded like 172336. Class 66 bobbins also can be made of metal. For model 513, I use the 172336-S bobbins as I find Singer branded bobbins are usually of higher quality than most (but not all) of the generics. According to Singer, the class 66 plastic bobbin measures 10mm in height with a 21mm diameter. The class 66 metal bobbins measure 11mm in height with a 21 mm diameter. Class 66 bobbins fit dozens of different Singer models. You should be just fine with these Singer branded bobbins: www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbins-singer-class-66-172336-s.aspx If you want to try and save money and risk lower quality then these bobbins are the correct size and cost less: www.sewingpartsonline.com/bobbins-singer-apollo-class-66-172336.aspx BTW, I have 20 more videos of model 513 including bobbin winding, belt changing, maintenance repairs and how and where to oil the machine. Thanks for watching my channel.
