💡Source Bregno:
it is the highest in altitude among the Subasio springs (1028 m) and is divided between the municipalities of Assisi and Spello, which fought over it since the Middle Ages. It can be reached via a hiking trail that starts from the church of the Madonna della Spella, which can also be traveled by people with motor disabilities. The source is also equipped with a small refuge with a fireplace and a small area equipped for picnics and bivouacs.
The name derives from its function as a drinking trough for animals (“bregno” or “trough”) and has Lombard origins; in 18th and 19th century documents it is called "Bregnole" or "Bregnola". Precisely because it was a strategic point for watering the herds that grazed on the top of the mountain, Fontebregno was bitterly disputed between Spello and Assisi, until the resolution of 1772, following a sentence by Monsignor Tiberio Soderini, who defined the boundaries of the municipal areas to the advantage of the city seraphic and which was imposed as an act of concord by Pope Clement XIV, at the request of the municipality of Assisi.
The source had three openings and consisted of a high parapet and short side wings; there was also a plaque walled up on the façade, which commemorated the sentence of Cardinal Soderini, who ordered that the municipalities of Spello and Assisi should jointly provide for any future restoration of the source. This is because the two filtering galleries that converge in the intake structure are built, one in the municipality of Assisi and one in the municipality of Spello. Today the source, restored in 2012, is equipped with two vents and in correspondence with the left one, there is a sculpture by Fiorenzo Bacci, which depicts the Healing Nymph of the Subasio waters: this, which therefore represents a tribute to water, is part of a series of works dedicated to the four elements (earth, wind, water, fire) which are distributed within the Subasio Park.
