It was originally tracking like it was supposed to, so maybe he did have the wheel lashed to begin with. But then, it becomes painfully obvious that the steering wheel is no longer secured. Why not just stop and fix it instead of being stupid?
@darrylhuber4937
10 жыл бұрын
It appears to me the driver is aware and is deliberately driving as far to the right as he could. As to why not stop and fix it, in this case where the vehicle would not be able to stop on the shoulder but would also block 2-3 lanes of an expressway continuing to drive until you can find a safe exit is far less dangerous than stopping where he is.
@scotstclair9102

Darryl Huber I disagree. It would have taken only a minute or two to run back there, straighten the wheels, and secure them. Surely that would have been better than driving on with a large vehicle barely under control.
@beverwyck1
10 жыл бұрын
***** I agree, stopping would have been better especially at one of the exit ramps he passed. I've seen guys use ropes and even bungee cords to lash the steering wheel but the few times I've had to do it i always used a ratchet strap from the wheel to the seat.
@Coolty44
10 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, but what if it was actually a major steering component issue? It looks like it took some good damage to the drivers side prior to the tow. Plus, not everyone is bright enough to see that he isn't moving and would probably slam into him. At least where he stopped people will be paying attention as they plan to merge onto the road.
@MysticMTL

You can see all the damage where he hit the exit signs, and ripped off the bumper on the curbs. Very dangerous, especially if the tow hook came apart and the bus could have flipped! This driver obviously saw what was going on, he has mirrors, and he was staying as far to the left as possible. And even if he didn't look in his mirror, he couldn't hear all the windows breaking and bumper being torn off?!? Very strange situation here.

@Whedabosear

I watched the entire clip. If the bus was in an accident or had a major mechanical malfunction that prevented the tires from being turned, the tow truck driver would had been safer to either flatbed the bus or use wheel dollies, or remove the drive shaft and tow the bus from the front. From the looks of the type of Tow Truck I would say he had a Class A Commercial Drivers Licence. If this is the case he is possibly looking at jail time for doing something that dangerous. He may not have cared but he risked the life of a lot of people.

No wonder my insurance is so high. After all, they take the national claim average to set my rate. This is wrong on too many levels. He is in a tow truck too light for the job. Securing the steering wheel was obviously neglected. The bus was towed without supplying air to the bus in order to get the air ride suspension inflated. This gives the professionals a bad wrap.
@Drummdude1

Not most!!! A small percentage of accidents in the industry are caused by the operator being on the phone. While in transit MOST are caused by people making unsafe lane changes in front of the truck. "It's better to have people think you're ignorant. Than to open your mouth and prove it!"

the tyres don't blow out, because they follow parallel to the truck & the back end of the truck doesn't get pulled over. i've pulled many vehicles that were bent after hitting a tree, the lifting equipment pivots, so that's at an angle, the trailing wheels pull straight, but just offset to the towing vehicle. this however, is just plain dangerous & the driver clearly hadn't taken the various precautions before setting off, he should at least have stopped & tried straightening the wheels up

So, the tow-truck driver deliberately threw his job away, did he? Deliberately risked a citation from the police, did he? I don't believe that he would have continued putting the bus at risk of an accident, which would almost certainly have involved the police had he known that he had not locked the steering. I imagine that the experience would have ensured that he always, but always, locked the steering and checked his mirrors in future, if he managed to keep his job, of course.
