The bricks are decoy. The avarage person associates brick with “tradition” and “artisan”. Ronan point wasn’t built correctly. There’s nothing wrong with precast but ronan point was early technology coupled with inproper execution. They put newspapers in joints where there should have been mortar. The panels should be placed in a mortar bed, with sufficient compressive strenght. But instead due to lack of proper supervision they used newspapers in some places. Oopsie.... Ronan point also didn’t have enough redundancy, i.e. It did not have an alternate load path as a safety fall back. Nowerdays high rise buildings are required to have some redundancy against gas explosions, to prevent progressive collapse. This is ususally provided with extra reinforcement bars that tie the panels tohether. It’s a bit technical to explain in full detail how this works though. Those flats in barking look very similair to ronan point, the walls look like a sandwhich construction with a load bearing inner wall, a bit of thermal insulation in the core and an outer panel that acts as cladding. The panels are joined with rebar or stainless steel connectors.

True, I lived in a new build for 8 years.. The bricks are awful, they was saturated with water, my property got flooded on more than 3 occasions, there was a waterfall of rain coming through all my ceilings, even though I was on the second floor and there was a flat above me. Needless to say they moved me.

The large concrete panels are not just cladding, they are what the building was made from - there is no other structural support. This is what is called a Large Panel System. If the connections from one panel to another panel were not done properly, the building can collapse like Ronan Point did. There is an excellent documentary here on KZitem called "Inquiry - The great British Housing disaster" that explains really well the problems of these LPS buildings and why a lot of them already got demolished in the 80s, only 20 years after they were built.

some of the buildings from the 50s-80s in London are unsafe as they are able to sway from side to side during high winds which is probably why they are being pulled down. RT did a video on this recently

The reason why they are tearing down the ‘flat pack’ blocks is because they are dangerous. Read about the ronan point disaster. It only takes one panel to fail for the whole block to fall down.

The blocks built the same as the Ronan Point were all reinforced afterwards (except three in Southwark which were recently discovered!) and the other types are not built in the same way so wouldn't collapse in such an incident.

They're still building in precast concrete, I would've thought they could reinforce the joints more cheaply than demolishing entire blocks.

Loads of new builds have gen2s. They are horrid. A gen2 can not cope with the abuse that they get in residential buildings. And they are painfully slow. I know of buildings with over 30 floors which have cheap 1.6 m/s gen2s.
