Thanks for doing this, I’m a big Splatoon fan and the analysis of these absolutely confounding osts are some of my personal favorites. That being said, next, you could do the OST for the game Rain World if you’d like to. It’s minimalistic but conveys the atmosphere of the game really well. In particular, the way the Threat themes are organized is great.

Your observation on how each of the instruments feel like they’re doing their own thing is quite apt. The in-universe composer of this song, Omega-3, is a trio of Salmonid composers that vaguely tolerate each other at best. With a snooty cellist, an antisocial timpani drummer and an upstart dj, the three have very little common ground with one another.

Since you mentioned the names, here’s a bit more world building! Salmonid have a very strong sense of unity with their tribes. As such, they don’t have individual names. "There's a melody... and it's dead." canonically the DJ of the band is kind of the troublemaker of the group and usually the melody gets killed by him throwing in sound effects and record scratches. In universe he brings out the best of the band by creating a disorganized sound and kind of keeping the other two members on their toes, kind of having to adapt to his nonsense. He is also the youngest member

Considering how the Salmon Run tracks are "canonically composed" by a Salmonid band named ω-3 (which I have feeling they haven't properly learned music theory), and Xtra wave is usually not to be expected at all, it makes the whole track understandably more chaotic than usual. It's great

This is more food for thought, but hearing an analysis of this song got me thinking. I was wondering if the song is more about the current state of the Salmonids instead of the king itself. Mr. Grizz caused such an imbalance, basically they’re all hunted for profit. Even their king is being hunted now. The strongest Salmonids fall, and hope for the army and their civilization falls with him. Chaos rules their lives, especially without a guiding force like a king I could be overthinking though

This is absolutely one of my favorite songs from 3 (as of release time at least), the part where the cello(?) immediately leads into the timpani absolutely gets me excited for this fight. I think part of why I think the chaoticness works well is because inklings basically have no info on the salmonids and these songs are allegedly “war music” and from my very minimal music understanding, some armies use music to intimidate their foes. I think this track absolutely copies the way the players are most likely feeling. (Similar thoughts on the other tracks) Salmon Run and it’s music have always been a major part of why i loved 2 and now 3 and every single one of those songs only hypes me up now (but then I have always loved “chaotic” songs). Most people hardly talk about this mode and I barely know anything about music so thank you so much for making this. I think videos like this help people like me understand why they’ve chosen to use and make specific tracks and how they work. ❤

I LOVE this interpretation of the music, the way everything is scattered and chaotic, like each teammate trying to focus on something different but everything is falling apart or gets interrupted. This track in particular reminds me a lot of the breakcore genre - you can hear little influences of it in Omega 3's music but this is the first track to fully commit to that style
@artsyomni

There's a short moment where the melody is essentially the first few notes from John Williams' Olympic theme, and I can't imagine it's just a coincidence. That theme has such a sense of regal majesty, but the way it's used here, it's like it acknowledges Cohozuna's kingship, but doesn't take it seriously.

I know it's not a Splatoon song, but Marx's Theme from Kirby: Super Star for the SNES ALSO changes time signature constantly! However, unlike the Salmon Run tracks, instead of being breakcore-esc it tries to sort of... maintain a melody? I suppose instead of anxiety, Marx's Theme tries to provoke insanity and... malevolence? Again, it's not a Splatoon track but I'd love to hear your thoughts on it anyway!

1:10 to me it sounds like a roar of dread, as if the music itself didn't want to continue, ' it's over shifts done, good job crew, let's get our pay and...' but then as the ending victory song is ending, someone roars at them saying 'it's overtime... Get back to work.' Which is what the distorted melody is, the horrid realization that the job just started and they know the horror that awaits 1:38 the music was not prepared, just like how the inklings and octolings are never prepared... For the entrance of a king... The music scrabbles in horror as they attempt to continue on playing 8:18 panicked, but still knowing a job must be done, the threat Infront of them brings some form of stability... 'goal: survive, subgoal:kill that thing, think not anything thi- I WANT TO GO HOME! MOMMY!!! THIS IS THE END!!! Focus n-n-now! Just a few... More seconds... Right? We... we can live... RUN' is how I would describe this part... I don't have a job or a degree in music but this is just what I surmised from that part of the song 😅

One thing I really love about this track is the sudden melodies that appear only to die moments later. There are some that have almost a sort of "regal air" to them, like what one might associate with depictions of royalty. It's like on one hand, the music is meant to depict (and encourage) your team's panic and disorganization, and at the same time, act as a fanfare for His Fatty Majesty.

I hope if they make a new song it doesn’t use any normal instruments but rather DIY ones, the idea of something familiar but completely foreign like a fishing line string Ukulele but the base is just drift wood, or pots being banged on by ladles, or use a strainer with junk inside to act as a maracas that is then brushed by a hard piece of metal. You could even use the scrapping of fishing hooks on like leather or metal to add a disturbing background sound, everything out of tune trying to make an orchestra, like trying to play one of beethoven’s symphony’s with only pans.
