For someone who says he's not an accordion player, you do very well!

Your videos and others I've seen on KZitem about the so-called toy accordions convinced me to order a new one online. They're very inexpensive. I'm not an accordion player -- I play ukuleles -- but I can see the potential of these little accordions. Just like the ukulele, they don't seem to get the respect they deserve as real instruments. I think that calling them a toy is a disservice. I'd like to see them called "17/8 piano-key accordions," meaning 17 piano keys plus 8 bass buttons, and drop the term "toy". A more informative name would be "17 chromatic-key / 8 bass-button" accordion, but that's kind of a mouthful. However, it would distinguish them from the diatonic button accordions that have 8 tonal buttons and 3 bass buttons, which are also sold as toys. Learning when to push and when to pull the bellows for the diatonic accordion would be annoying to me. But the piano keys are intuitive -- what you see is what you get. Thanks for making these videos! As for the limited range -- the standard ukulele's lowest note is middle C (C4). Although they can go up to 12 frets or more, ukulele songs rarely go higher than the 7th fret on the A string, which is an E5. I can see that nearly all of the ukulele repertoire can be played on the 17/8 accordions. Now if we can just get a simple notation comparable to the ukulele tablature, we can make song charts for the little accordions by rewriting ukulele tablatures that have melody and chords.

Hi. I love my recently-acquired 8-button accordion, but it is OLD; it is NOT a newer model, such as the ones you'll find on Amazon or eBay. If I play it too long or too hard, parts start to come loose--or stick together. Just the other day, I had to spray teflon on two treble-key pivot points. Perhaps the newer models are more durable; I just don't know. You'll find out soon enough! Regarding "terms," I use the term "toy" for my littlest accordion not to diminish the instrument itself, for as anyone can see, I love the little fella! I use the term "toy" in the sense that someone might use the term "ladies" or "stroller" for an accordion that is the NEXT size down from what is commonly referred to as "full-sized." My ATLAS accordion is--just slightly--one size down from "stroller." Yes, I would like to have a nice "stroller" (say, a Sonola, or an Excelsior), but as far as liquid cash goes, I don't see that happening!

Thanks for watching! I DON'T really play this song correctly; I just sort of make things up as I go. I don't have any sheet music, though you could probably find the music on the Internet. For the verse, I just play a "D minor" chord and a "C Major" chord. (Remember: On this accordion, the "major chord button" can be used a Major chord or a Minor chord--because the "third" tone is missing.) For the quick Chorus (or Bridge), I simply play an "F Major chord" and "G Major chord" over and over, then finish the Chorus with a "D Major." But--KEEP in mind that this is NOT the correct way to play this song. When I first got this accordion, I played the crap out of it--and it started to fall apart! So now I rarely use it. Tired of making repairs!

@@scalephrase Wait, so I bought a toy accordion recently, but was rather disappointed I couldn't play other chords. I thought I was trapped with major chords. Are you telling me the buttons on this toy accordion (and most others) basically just play power chords? If so, I will be able to do A LOT more with it. Still a bit bummed I can't take advantage of the fact you can play entire chords with one button on accordion.

In this video, at the 3:54 mark, I explain how on THIS accordion, the "thirds" are missing. Other brand names of toy accordions might NOT have this feature. The truth is this: I got tired of repairing this accordion over and over, so I gave it away!

What chords do you use for this?

For the "Drunken Sailor" song, there are only TWO chords: D Minor and C Major. When I played that song on this little accordion, I was improvising. I can't remember which chords I used for the "improvised" part (in the middle); and I can't recreate the song now because I gave this accordion back to the people who gave it to me. The darn thing kept falling apart! If you have a 120-button (bass) accordion, another of my videos might be useful for you: 120 Bass Accordion: #14 "Drunken Sailor" Improvisation. Hope that helps.
