The Battle of Hoth, toy photography.
Inspired by Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Hello and welcome back to another behind the scenes toy photography video!
This week I'll show you how to make an icy battle scene. I call it The Battle of Hoth.
I'll also show you how I edited the image in Photoshop.
For this shot I used LEGO sets 75300 Imperial TIE Fighter and 75320 Snowtrooper Battle Pack.
The basis for this setup was a large concrete slab that I covered in baking flour and placed in front of my background TV. I discovered the hard way that flour is really difficult to get out of LEGO holes, so I don't think I'll use the two of them together in the future, but I'm still happy that I took this shot.
With my lighting in place, I filled in the scene with these 3D printed rock formations. I'll leave a link to the print files in the description.
With the terrain in place, I positioned my LEGO. I only recently got this TIE Fighter and have been super pumped to use it in a shot. I used a magnifying filter on my camera that allowed me to take a super close up of my main Snowtrooper. Then I filled in the background with some more infantry.
When my setup was complete, I did some light painting with a single red LED. I wanted to brush in some muzzle flash during my edit, and this LED allowed me to light up my minifigs without illuminating too much of the environment around them.
Here is main exposure. I used this as a base to blend my other exposures on top of with layer masking and the brush tool. This process often requires some trial and error but after playing around for a bit, I was able to blend the layers to my satisfaction.
Next I added adjustment layers for levels, colour balance, hue and saturation.
Following that I added a custom vignette and cropped the image, before doing some dodging and burning to further fine tune the lighting.
Lastly, I used some custom brushes to add muzzle flare to the blasters.
So once again, here's my starting image.
And here's where I ended up!
