I don't think you have mentioned which of Toyotas V6's you are talking about but I guess a later one. The V6 used in 4Runners about 1990 was an absolute heap of junk. They had a design error on the head gaskets which as far as I can tell they never fixed. The design failure was passages between the head and the block which were too close to each other thus making the head gasket with weak walls and they kept blowing. According to mechanics many years later they never fixed them. So although I hear a lot about Toyota's reliability etc they have certainly had some bad engines. I know because I had one.
