The reason to use one of these Baxter adapters is NOT performance, it's CONVENIENCE. A lot of home mechanics absolutely hate Toyota's modern messy and fiddly cartridge filter system. After changing the oil on my 2021 Tundra yesterday, I agree with them. Toyota's cartridge system is a real pain in the a$* compared to normal old screw-on filters. I hate changing oil, but I live in a very rural area, so I have to change my oil myself, and anything that makes that job easier and less messy is worth it to me.

Beautifully engineered. I now just buy normal oil filters now instead of those stupid messy paper things Toyota uses. If you do your own oil changes, this will be a game changer. No offense Peter, but since the owner already had the Baxter adapter it would have been much cheaper and better for the customer to have just installed a replacement spin-on filter. That adapter allows the use of a much larger oil filter. The one you removed looked like it had at least double the amount of filtration media, plus a Wix spin-on filter will have an anti drain back valve built in. The cost of the spin on filter is almost identical to an OEM Toyota filter, and given the outstanding quality of some spin-ons, particularly Wix, she would have had better filtration with that setup than with stock. So you charged her an additional $45-50 that she didn't need to spend to get her back to an inferior stock setup just because you didn't like it. Plus she's now out the $250 she already spent for it. That's a total of $300 in needless additional costs to the customer, and that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Just saying

The dealer did the first few oil changes as part of the rip-off extended warranty they sold my daughter with her brand new 4runner. On the last free oil change that dealer cranked that plastic housing on so tight I couldn't get it off with the standard Toyota filter wrench. I ordered a high strength steel one and a replacement aluminum cap from Toyota before I cranked that housing off with a 3 foot pipe on my 1/2 inch breaker bar. This was very deliberately done by this dealership. Toyota makes the best cars but their dealers are just as crooked as the rest of the brands. They especially like to take advantage of women that want to take care of things themselves.

Baxter is a very good quality convertor to the normal filters. Also it allows to use a larger filter with large filtering area, instead of a small cartridge. Baxter adaptor in combination with large WIX canister 51516 (4.8" long) is order of magnitude better than toyota's plastic housing and crappy paper cartridge. I think, Toyota made a mistake when moved from regular filter canisters to the housing with cartridges. The only negative side of Baxter adaptor is a price. If they would be able to sell the adaptors below 100USD per piece, they would sell millions of them.

If the adapter weren't so huge, I might do it on my Toyotas because a can does seem easier to me. That adapter looks similar to the one I installed on my 2010 Porsche Cayman S (LN Engineering), as I feared at some time the plastic canister (crack) or the relief valve would fail and I'd be buying a $30,000 long block exchange engine that I would have to install. I saw that Toyota offers an aluminum one to replace the thermal plastic one and I'd do that on a Prius which goes through less stress than my Porsche. No different than a traditional filter installed incorrectly.
