If he says yes to the repair, will you video parts of it please?

I wish you were here in Buffalo NY so I would have a Toyota expert to work on my first generation Tundra.

I love how you talk about the bidirectional controls and feature of the more advanced scan tool this time. Like controlling recirculation mode. Great way to test. Too bad this customer had a servo motor and not just a compressor or condenser leak. Hey it sometimes can be a relay but I didn't think that for just a young Toyota. I think the book time could be like a while day at least to remove the whole dash down to the core support (big metal structure bar you see in the middle). I think even the steering has to come out too. Poor guy.

The more complicated they get, the more problems they will have. Wait till you have to take your car to someone because it got 'hacked'. Real fun stuff awaits.

Would you recommend changing the evaporator while you are in there? Hate to have all that labor again down the road.

Would a chewing gum and bailing wire fix be to put a valve in the hose going to the heater core? Inconvenient but you could shut it off for the summer. Anything to avoid thousands in repair costs.

Yes. That repair was mind boggling. I would think the chance of a mechanic getting it back together correctly would be pretty slim.

Put in a new heater core and AC evaporater as long as you're in there. Might as well, they are cheaper than having to do it again.

t least they can try to cool the whole car using the rear AC just leaving the front in recirc with the front fan off.

I would advise him to just turn on the rear AC unit to get cold air. 😂Its a very expensive job. The car care nut channel did this type of job on a lexus and it is a big job. The whole dash has to come off.

They probably have never done it before. If not, they are learning on your time. See a shop who knows what they are doing so they won't miss a screw or route a harness wrong. If they don't take it back apart, you'll get a rattle or a pinched and eventually broken wire. But book time is around there. 16 hrs. A good shop can do it in all one day. Maybe 9-11 hours. See car care nut for a recent dash removal video for a blend door change.

This price is mostly labor. I had this service performed on my 05 Avalon. The entire dashboard had to be removed and the servo motors replaced under extended warranty back in 2014. The warranty paid over $2,200 in labor costs at $136.00 per labor hour. It’s not just Toyota that does this, these electronically controlled HVAC systems end up costing when it comes to repair/replace.

Given that this is an extremely labour intensive repair, would it not be possible to go down to your local "Hood" or "Ghetto" snd look for some illegal immigrants that could carry out this work for a paltry fee? I am sure there must be plenty of desperate creatures willing to do a days work for $5?
