This is by far THE BEST setup I've seen. Thanks Braam! I would like to reach out as it is the setup I have been looking for my own Hilux!

Hilux camping may be a good solution for many. Your setup in this video looks great and it is clear You have put a lot of thought into it. The combination of a dayly driver and the overland setup sounds like a dream come true. A simple and massproduced version, adaptable for individual fittings, may make if more realistic for more people. Beside holyday use and adventureing, it may fill the need for workers moving about at different workplaces and even homeless people can experience a quality of life step up.

Hi Svend, as always with enthusiastic people and their overland setup, things constantly change. We have embarked on a Phase 2 of our Overland setup and I am planning to replace the Roof Top Tent, the awning, and the battery box as well as the Power box. I am also seriously contemplating moving the fridge to the back seat. The main aim of Phase 2 is two fold: 1 - redistribute weight forward and lower down. I can achieve this easily by moving the fridge to where the back seat currently is. 2 - camp setup and camp breakdown took too long for my liking. If one is an avid photographer then you need to be out there in the wilderness at the best times of the day. Early morning and late afternoon. One should not spend time breaking or setting up camp during those times! We will create another more comprehensive video from front to the rear once the changes are complete - which should be before 20 June 2020 as we are going back to Botswana and the Moremi!! 😀

Hi EWA, I love your video and depth of planning. I am planning an almost identical setup with a Hilux to travel from the UK in 2023. Would you consider possibly sharing your spreadsheet for calculating the weight spread on the vehicle, it would be incredibly helpful?

Hi Allen, Apologies - was on a hiking trip, and did not have access to the internet. Sure I will share my spreadsheet with you. Please send your contact details to Info@ExperienceWildAfrica.co.za and I will share with you. Thank you for watching!

Awesome setup. How did you mount the drawers frame on the load bin? Did you use existing mounting points or just drill and bolt it down? I'm looking at making a similar setup
@ExperienceWildAfrica

Hi Chris Unfortunately I had to drill holes (ouch! 🤕), prep them for rust prevention and fitted rivnuts. These work great as I only have to use a socket above the frame and tighten all bolts. No crawling underneath the vehicle required (To be honest I will be unable to get to the nuts due to the Long Rang Tank in any case)

any concerns about diesel quality with such a modern engine? i'm from austria and consider a 2.8 Hilux as my new overland platform, but i've heard all kind of stuff why this engine is not ready for world travel, like adblue, AGR, diesel particulate filter, sulphur level of diesel around the world and so on, what's your take on that?
@ExperienceWildAfrica

Hi DooMRunneR, I am very careful where I fill-up with Diesel. So far in all my travels I have not had any issues in the last 15 years or so... I do have a LRT (Long Range Tank) which helps a lot in planning my stops, so I am not forced to take diesel from any filling station on my journeys. I also look for a fairly modern, well used filling stations (lots of traffic etc), as this will reduce my chances of getting contaminants in my diesel. I never use diesel from Tanks / Drums next to the road!!! I am planning to fit a secondary filter unit - just to be safe. (I always carry 2 additional diesel filter cartridges as part of my spare parts) Most countries are cleaning up their act when it comes to low sulphur diesel as they too are limited in the vehicle choices when they import 4x4 vehicles. Not everybody likes to drive the legendary 4.2 1HZ Diesel in the Toyota Land Cruisers. A bulletproof motor, easy to maintain, but you have to accept the low power & torque for such a heavy vehicle. When you are serious to use your vehicle for *world* overland travel, then your concerns are valid. If your travels are limited to lets say Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho etc) , you should not have any issues when using a modern diesel engine. As an example: Botswana source their Fuel & Diesel from South Africa. I am unable to comment about Northern Africa, South America etc. I know the Australians do not have major issues with diesel - these guys love their 4.5 V8 diesels, and these engines are more sensitive to bad diesel than the 2.8 as an example. Please let me know which vehicle you settle on for your overland rig! Not always an easy choice. Thank you for watching!

@@ExperienceWildAfrica To be honest i would like to keep my old LN65 and replace the 2L with a 3L but it's a single cab and i need a doublecab because of the kids (you can have a look at it @HiluxLN65 on instagram). Actually i realy like the new 2.8 Revo but i think it's too much of a hassle with the Diesel exhaust fluid (which is not available around the globe and i think your south african version doesnt need this stuff right?), the EGR and DPF (does your truck come with a DPF and EGR too?) We have super high regulations now in europe so i think i opt for the previous N25 in good used condition without all this environmental stuff.

Hi EWA, in you overland experience is the hilux manual gearbox better option over automatic, thx
@ExperienceWildAfrica

Hi faizsamsodien, Both have their place in the off road world. The auto gearbox does have some advantages over the manual gearbox, especially in sand, as your are always in the right gear, and gear changes are very fast compared to a gear down action on a manual gearbox. Rock climbing an auto box is very nice for vehicle control. With the manual the DAC (Downhill Assist Control) on the Hilux breaking is taken care of for you - if you need it. (This used to be a disadvantage years ago with Auto boxes and steep downhill sections - you had to do the breaking yourself) The auto box is less fuel efficient than the manual - on road and off road as well. The auto box may be very expensive to fix IF something goes wrong, while the manual you do need to replace the Clutch & Pressure plate every 120,000 - 150,000 km. (Sometimes less depending on how much off road driving you do) I chose the Manual box as I am more comfortable with a manual box. I do not mind the auto box, my previous Hilux was a 4.0 V6 Auto. WONDERFUL machine, but the auto box tended to hunt for gears, meaning that it will drop down a gear as very soon after, another. Then you had to hold on - especially if you have Cruise Control activated. The fuel consumption on the 4.0 V6 was "not that good" ;-) The auto box has more Torque than the manual. The manual box has a separate functions which I quite like - it is called the IMT - Intelligent Manual Transmission. With this selected, the engine revs are auto adjusted as you gear up or down. Makes for a smoother drive - almost auto like. My opinion - You cannot go wrong with either manual or auto for Overlanding.
