When the 8 speed first came to the Camry in 2018 and the RAV4 in the 2019 it had a little shifting problems but nothing that would leave you stranded. Even with Toyota products, it is never the best to get a first year model of a new design.

Toyota had a ton of complaints about the Aisin 8 speed transmissions in the Camrys and the Buick Regals. I'm no GM fan, but their 9 speed transmission in the FWD Regal supposedly drives better and is more reliable than the AWD Regal with the 8 speed Aisin. Also, Aisin made the gearbox in the infamous VW 09G transmissions used in the New Beetles and Jettas. Those transmissions required a rebuild every 75k miles or so.

Anything from southern Europe. Although, I'd say that Fiat, it quite depends on the model (500 and Pandas seem like sturdy little cars). But anyhow, it's light-years behind the likes of Toyota. Renault Laguna, this model sells for below a €1000 with all options and just 100k km and not that old here. Why? Because everything breaks all the time. I've read a review of a guy that replaced his transmission three times within 50k km. It was all warranty, but still. I drive a Fiat Punto, it's quirky but decent. It was cheap as well. In Europe I'd say buy Volkswagen, Volvo (solid cars) or Japanese. Stay away from older Opels, GM made a mess with that one too. I haven't seen an ten year old Astra without major problems lol.

It was US money that restored both European and Japanese economies after WWII. Marshall and Truman should be better recognised for their foresight - German and Japanese industry was devastated after this war. US Dollars bought them the newest most up-to-date tech after years of senseless destruction. No surprise that in the 50's and 60's product from Germany and Japan was far better engineered than USA and UK - They had new kit and we were still using milling machines from the 30's and 40's. It's historic irony that Japan and Germany, who were the defeated nations, later benefited from the economic fallout I live in the UK and drive a VW Golf. It's a great car - Most of the high value tech in my home is made in Japan or Germany [Hi-Fi/White Goods] Everything else is 'Designed in California' but made in China? 🤓

My wife bought her 16 Soul just before I met her. Compared to our 13 Camry the KIA is very unrefined. Suspension, transmission, throttle response, quality, fit and finish, drivability, is all no comparison. But her soul does get 33 mpg in mixed driving to her work! We are about to get a RAV 4 to replace her soul and we’re keeping the Camry. Not to mention Kia’s are known for blowing engines. In fact Kia upgraded their powertrain coverage to 150k to compensate for this quality issue.

There shouldn't be any more than 6 speeds to ANY automatic transmission. Period. Everyday drivers have no reason to have 8,9 or 10 speed transmissions. And I HATE the electronic garbage they put on knobs inside the cars. The automotive industry is in the toilet right now, and these ideas will continue to push it farther down the drain.

The Rav4 was just redesigned for the 2019 model year on Toyota's new platform. First was the Camry in 2018, then the Rav4 in 2019 and Corolla in 2020. Toyota is working on redesigning their other SUVs and Trucks. Yes, Toyota keeps making improvements to each model as they get refreshed/redesigned

Doubt you’ll see this, but Scotty, you’re the reason I bought my 2018 Camry (got a good deal from a company going out of business - $16k w/ 43k miles). Despite having a ‘97 Tacoma that runs better than I do despite being a year younger than it, your videos convinced me that Toyota is still the amazing brand it once was. I expect to have this car long enough to pass on to my own child, or my (much younger) brother. It’s also nice to know that my car is worth significantly more than I owe on it in case anything major comes up
