Thanks for the video 👍 I was going crazy trying to figure out why there wasn’t vacuum in Port P. I removed the throttle body and found gunk jammed the pin hole size vacuum port. Cleaned it thoroughly and now getting vacuum and the dreadful P0401 code when away. Still need to drive the car long distance and make sure there’s no additional CEL. Next step is to get it Smogged/Emission test. Update: 97 Camry passed emission test successfully!

How did you clean out the gunk in the port? Where was the vacuum port located? I took a quick peek when I changed the air intake hose recently, and my throttle body looked really clean.
@elgatogordo9523
3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanCMonahan Use carburetor cleaner and shop air. The ports are located on the throttle body topside. Follow the vacuum modulator small hoses to the TB. They'll be marked P, Q, and R. Manually move the throttle body butterfly back so you can see the tiny pin hole size ports inside the TB that will need to be cleaned. Blow some shop air through the ports to remove any carbon deposit inside these ports. Once cleaned, use a vacuum gage to see if the ports are producing vacuum while accelerating to 1500 rpm or more. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the compliment. I never checked to see if the scanner did any controls. Especially since the system is very simple and the computer energizes the solenoid pretty much every time you give it throttle. Even in park. So it was just as easy to bypass that transducer with a vacuum connector and see if egr valve opened briefly during that window its supposed to. Thanks again

Should the EGR open when the engine is cold? When I rev it up with the engine cold the valve opens making the engine hesitate. When I unplug that solenoid underneath it does not do that. I wonder if the ECM is bad? I've replaced that solenoid and the vacuum modulator and I still get codes P0401 and P0402. Also, does the valve stay open when you keep the RPMs up? In the video you don't maintain RPMs: you just rev it up and down.

@jamesdanner7850

+TheWiseGuy do u have a vacuum pump? U can pull vacuum on valve and see if car stumbles or stalls to confirm valve operation. U need to check if vacuum is even making it to the transducer from the electric solenoid when u Rev the engine off idle. And if both of those are ok. The little metal line from the egr that ends up under the transducer can clog and u won't get enough back pressure to make the transducer operate and allow the vacuum from the solenoid to make it to the egr valve

I have the exact same car 2000 Toyota Camry 4cyl. Replaced the VSV (EGR vacuum solenoid) and the check engine light went out after driving 50 miles. The computer tests P0401 by energizing the VSV during cruising speed and looks for a quick response from the Map sensor. Good luck to anyone trying to remove the VSV, it's buried on the back of engine. I unplugged the blue connector by reaching from the passenger side, wheel removed. Remounted a new VSV on the passenger side of the intake manifold. VSV bracket reversed so the connector could reach it. Just buy a new VSV, don't bother testing the VSV, it's a heat related, intermittent problem.

Michael Mirro i will have to give this a try as my EGR system passed all the vacuum/pressure tests mentioned in this video (and others) Logically i shouldn’t have a P0401 but if there could be an intermittent issue with the VSV as you say that would explain my senseless situation

With the whole EGR system working correctly how much vacuum is being applied to the EGR valve diaphragm? I have close to 20 inches of mercury all the way up till the hose leaving the vsv and entering the top of EGR valve. only getting around 5 inches I'm guesing before the valve open? is this correct? or should it be higher? any help is much appreciated
@jamesdanner7850
8 жыл бұрын
+Rudy Reyna I want to say the bad bpt I see have low vacuum like that too. But remember they are controlled by exhaust back pressure by name. Those hoses split and the little port coming off of the bottom of the egr valve that that hose is attached to clog up with carbon. If u don't have enough back pressure pushing on the transducer. It won't open the vacuum port enough either. Those are simple systems. When it's warm enough, the vacuum solenoid allows vacuum to the supply port of the bpt, and egr will open just revving in park. U can bypass the bpt and feel the egr lift with ur finger. Then maybe try a long vaccum hose to the bottom of the bpt and blow air with your mouth into it and see if it works that way( everything else hooked back up correctly ).
@mergeform
8 жыл бұрын
My EGR valve will only hold 5 inches of vacuum (vacuum guage T fitting in between vsv and egr). The vac hose from the VSV is 20 inches vacuum when above idle and warmed up. I also got the Dorman vacuum modulator (bpt) which seems to allow more vacuum at lower speeds. Just sent away for a new EGR valve, see if P0401 goes away. The old EGR valve vacuum diaphragm might be leaking. 2000 Toyota Camry 4cyl auto
@jamesdanner7850

Oh. Got it. Hard without a hand vacuum pump but same thing... Put a longer vacuum hose on egr valve and suck on it. U may not suck enough to open valve... Ha.. but if u put ur tongue on the hose, it should stick to it due to the vacuum if the egr diaphragm is good
@mergeform
8 жыл бұрын
Ok, replacing the EGR valve fixed it. The P0401 code went away as soon as the car warmed up. The bad EGR valve held just enough vacuum to almost work, but not at lower rpm. Buy Toyota parts if you can afford it. I bought Dorman for a cheap fix.

I had a hard time reaching the 4th HIDDEN 12 mm nut underneath the EGR cooler. Then, used a Torx E8 socket for the two Bolts ( in the back of EGR cooler) and I finally freed the EGR assembly. It's literally impossible to remove EGR valve only for DYI non professional therefore remove the whole EGR assembly. Good video J.D !!!

Hey James, would you have any ideas on why my 2003 Mazda Protege DX 2.0 Automatic sputters after refueling and also sometimes randomly idles rough, and also is lacks power from a stop while accelerating? Once I am up to speed the car is fine, it is only when the car is from a stop accelerating. It acts like it has no power until i get the rpm's above around 1500. No CEL's. I thought it would be the EGR, but I replaced that, so I tested the EVAP Purge Solenoid and it seems to function fine as well.
@jamesdanner7850
9 жыл бұрын
Ok.. my first thought was purge due to the fill up issue...tough if it's intermittent. But u could prove it while its happening by disconnecting the tank side of purge and checking for vacuum ( as long as its not being commanded/clicking. ) if so, disconnect the plug as well and see if vacuum exists. The other thought is those engines have a pcv system under the intake above the starter where there is a small curved pcv hose that splits and causes a pretty decent vacuum leak. It would be nice if u had a scanner to see fuel trim readings at idle. Or if u don't mind getting wet. while idling.. Spray a hose up under intake above starter(radiator side) and listen for the gurgling hiss of water being sucked in
