You can only engage the rear locker when it’s in 4 low so that rear locker wasn’t even engaged. That’s why the light was flashing. Also hold the traction control button down for a few seconds to disengage it for sand driving. These cars are awesome

I've had a 2019 version GXL for 12 months now, pretty much in the same option spec as this test model. Aside from a bull bar and recovery points fitted. Firstly, they're a fantastic car. We looked at LC200, but for another $50k we'd only just be getting the spec level we got with Prado GXL. Cops a bit of flak from LC owners for not being a real cruiser (or maybe its those who wish they had a LC, but don't have either car, who knows?) It's just a bunch of chest beating in any case, the car holds is own where it counts. As this review showed Prado's are a more than capable off road car with some luxury comforts to go with it. Totally agree on your tyre opinion Ronny, ours will wear AT's too once the dunlops wear out. But like you said they do the job, others will just do it better that's all. Just for clarity for anyone reading these comments before the brochure, the GXL middle row seats have their own climate controls, however the seats are heated only, you need to go to VX or Kakadu for heat/cooling seats in the middle row (and along with some other additional tech, pay a ludicrous premium for the priviledge). Saying all that, in summer the cooled front seats are a bloody godsend! My two cents on the GXL spec is this, the VX and Kakadu drive EXACTLY the same as the GXL (we tested a Kakadu before deciding on a specced up GXL). We could not justify the price premium for what we thought was non-essential tech (a tiny fridge in the centre console for eg, when the GXL has a vent from the COLD AC plumbed into its bin, plus we have a Waeco anyway) The extra accoutrements in VX and Kakadu don't change the way the car performs, nor have we missed them in the last 12 months of GXL ownership. I mean, we bought a new camper with the money we saved not buying a VX or Kakadu. On top of this, the Kakadu felt a little cheap and tacky with its "wood" (read: Plastic) trims when we drove it, the piano black plastics in the GXL look way better.

There's a few more extras than just the fridge in the centre console. You also get a sunroof, memory function seats, height-adjustable air suspension, rear entertainment system with remote, automatic folding 3rd row seats, terrain-selector mode, front camera, side cameras and 360 view, blind spot monitoring system, JBL premium 14-speaker system, cross-traffic monitoring system when reversing, auto-levelling rear suspension when loading, Toyota's KDSS, hill climb/descend assist, etc. Not sure if all of it is worth if, but over here you do get around £12k worth of extra for only an extra £6k
@Wazzaozzyskier
3 жыл бұрын
@@SZDPSantos I'm glad you listed them all, because I couldn't be bothered, nor could I be bothered fitting them to my car. Whilst some of the listed features are smart in function, frankly the "safety" features made me concerned for the basic competence of the end user to drive a vehicle. Only to achieve a more expensive, heavier Prado after adding it to the car. In 4WD terms in Australia a Kakadu or VX Prado is like buying an E class Benz and then buying an AMG pack to add the nice wheels, an AMG badge, fancy trims and body kits for an extortionate premium, only to short change yourself the real reason for the AMG badge in the first place, being the stonking engines they produce. The GXL is a very comfortable and offroad tech laden bit of kit anyway. So all of that electronic aid stuff just felt unnecessary and very expensive when we sat at the dealers desk to decide which model and options we'd buy.
@SZDPSantos
3 жыл бұрын
@@Wazzaozzyskier definitely more expensive and, in some cases, unnecessary. But like I said, over here BMW and Mercedes would've charged at least £15-20k in some of their models (at least that's close to what they charged for my S Class) whereas Toyota "only" asked for around £6k. It's similar to the new BMW Z4/Toyota Supra. Both manufactured by BMW, literally the same car. One is a hard top, the other is a soft top. Both basic models are around £47k for the Z4 and the Supra, while the the top spec Supra costs £53k and the top spec Z4 costs around £64k. Same car. You're just paying for their name. But like I said before, although it does cost more for the extras in the VX, you're not paying through the roof like you do with the AMG pack or the M Pack in BMWs. When you compare it like that to the BMWs and Mercedes, it's definitely worth the money. But it all depends on the buyer, if they really need all that stuff though

They are a great car, and I seriously thought about buying one, but the topic that doesn't get enough attention is PAYLOAD! They don't have much. The mid-spec VX has a payload of ~600Kg. The luxury Kakadu has only 535Kg. Put on a bullbar, roofrack, fridge, camping gear and 4 persons and you are straight over GVM. If you are towing a mid-sized camper or caravan with a towball weight of (say) 200Kg, you slash the payload to pieces.

@@Ronny_Dahl Ronny, Great review of the 2020 model! If your interested in doing a comparison to a 2018 VX prado we would be happy to loan you the car ? Has ECU reflash and a bit of other gear fitted on to add weight(bullbar, roof racks, tyre change etc, typical add ons that many people do after buying). I think it would outperform the 2020 model on the sand but interested in your view.

@@MiniLuv-1984 Having driven both the 200 and a Y62, The build quality and interior design in the Y62 is Decades behind the 200 Series. Sure the Y62 will smash it in a drag race, but that doesn't make up for the awful rear suspension design in the Patrol. It may be very comfy but have fun chewing out the insides of your rear tyres every time you hook up a van or heavy trailer. The reason people buy 200 Series over Patrols is simple, Toyota know the market well, and they keep the 200 exactly where it needs to be to sell.

@@Deathpyro17 can’t be more wrong here the rear wheels being chewed out can be easily fixed with a set of airbags to bring the back up, aweful rear suspension design is giving you 50mm of extra ground clearance from factory as it does not have a diff pumpkin to worry about, the real reason people buy a 200 over a Y62 is the fact people bashed them early in there life which put a lot of speculation out there the Y62 used more fuel which it does not especially when towing resale value is about the same with both cars and the interior might look older but it’s a damn sight more comfortable and better appointed.

Good review. Tip. The Prado can engage low range without locking the centre diff. This is useful if you tow because it gives you more control (you can go slower) when reversing into tight driveways or caravan pitches.

Great review, currently considering replacing my Gen 4 Pajero to a 150 series. I’ll definitely miss the simplicity and bulletproof engine of the Pajero especially deep in the African bush but the lack of comfort/new features and the inability to fold a single rear seat instead of a double has steered me to the Prado as replacement. I have a 120/GX470 as my daily driver. We use it for family camping trips, and other such things. My upgrades have been installing an ARB dual compressor, changing my tires over to Cooper AT/3 265/70/17, Metaltech sliders, ditch lights, ARB 2500 awning & room, Redarc BCDC, and 12k winch. Soon will be adding some bash plates, maybe a bull bar (don't want to add too much weight), 270 amp alternator, and snorkel (for dust and sand). I waited to find a KDSS equipped vehicle, and am very happy that I did. It's way nicer on road, better articulation off. I don't really need any lift so KDSS is perfect. We see an average of 16-18mpg, 13.83L/100km combined. Not too bad for a fairly loaded 4.7 V8. It's definitely a great Family 4wd, it's an amazing little adventure rig.

Lovely car. The question of whether it's a land cruiser wasn't that answered IMO. Does it have that legendary toughness, durability and is it over engineered? Yes I would own a 150 in a heartbeat, even if I couldn't afford it! What about reviewing the Isuzu MU-X?

In the USA the same body with a petrol variant is a Lexus GX with a naturally aspirated 4.6 litre gasoline V8. “Landcruiser” is a just a name and it doesn’t really mean anything. I think it’s whatever badge Toyota put on it. They lost the legendary toughness after the 60 series anyway as soon as they started putting hilux front diffs in it became a bit embarrassing.

Ronny, I came across a discussion on the Aulro forum which discussed your review of the new Defender. They absolutely hammered you, due to your lack of preparedness which resulted in you being unable to set the All Terrain Control system (Or whatever it's called). FYI, I own a 70 series, will likely own a Patrol next and would consider a Land Rover (If it wasn't for the fact they're unreliable), so I respect all makes as long as the vehicle is FIT FOR PURPOSE -

Hi Ronny, love your content👍 a quick edit about "How to engage 4x4" part; It's possible to engage Low range without engaging Center Diff Lock. This may come handy, when you need low range on a hard surface. You can also disengage the already locked center diff, when in 4LO, if you need to make a tight turn. IMO this option is a plus, compared to conventional 2H-4H-4L 4wds.
