Ok, as a prius driver for years now... @Car Mojo, @CarExpert: Both of you are wrong. B mode is not for extra regeneration, it's for driving in mountains. Normally going down a (steep) hill in a normal car with stick shift you put it in 3rd or 4th gear to break with the engine, because if you use the breaks they'll be red hot if it's a long way down not to speak of increased wear. Now the prius being a automatic you can't select a gear, and that is where B mode comes in. It tells the car to use the engine to provide aditional engine breaking going downhill. And because the prius also uses the regenerative system for breaking it also results in more regeneration. So no it's not a more regeneration button, it will actually reduce the efficiency on normal roads because, as you pointed out yourself, it's designed to maximise the distance you cover when not applying power. Other point for @CarExpert, concerning the bar in the rear window. My 2nd Gen prius has the same design, all of them have. Now I can tell you this, the moment you see a car through the bottom window the car behind you is (I believe it's called) tailgating. My rule of thumb, if you see him above the bar then the car behind you is further away. If the car's taillights are hidden behind the bar, they're a normal distance behind you but there is enough light coming arround the bar to still be aware someone is there. Added bonus, you don't get blinded by badly adjusted headlights. Going to the bottom window, the guy is so close to you that if you break the guy will run in to you guaranteed. That said, being a tall guy (2m); Is there still space for the rear passenger if the driver seat is in it's most rear position? If so, then I think I found the replacement for my 2nd Gen prius (though at 278.000km+ it is still going strong without any defects worth mentioning).
@jerichozorua999

Thank for the B mode info, on my old Prius, I thought it was Break mode or something, hardly used it. For the bar behind, I wouldn't say it's mainly made to block headlights/high beams, because my Mercedes B-class' rear mirror has a dimming function, where at night time, the mirror dims out headlamp/lights from vehicles behind... Just wondering why don't all cars install the dimming rear mirror

Dominic actually the Prius will automatically go into B mode if you're on a long downhill. You don't even have to do this yourself. Try it going down the Illawarra escarpment if you're anywhere near Sydney or Wollongong.

I've owned three, 1.2 million kms between them, all private use, not taxis or rideshare. Hands down the best cars I've owned and I've owned a LOT of cars. They just don't wear out, everything works, the economy stays great and tyres and brakes last forever. Bought one new in 2008, still going daily 260,000km on it. Still feels tight, no rattles, nothing failed or broken.
@bmccameron7642

@Brendan O'Keeffe Allow for a battery replacement if it hasn't had one yet...it will need it despite the relatively low km's. At last check they were $2,400 AUD Genuine, plus fitting if you can't do it yourself. The batteries degrade chemically over time, k total km's less important. Water pump will be weeping, allow for that, not overly expensive. Check that all servicing is up to date, plugs (Iridium), in-tank fuel filter are the biggest costs service wise. I usually recommend a transmission oil change as it darkens and absorbs moisture over time. this can lead to transmission failure as the electric motors run in the oil. It's a simple drain and refill on these. Use only Toyota WS (World Standard) for this. Other than that, all the usual due diligence that goes with a old used car. If you can spring the extra, go a later model. The Generation 2 was a great car, but they're getting old. Unless you get it really cheap, they can costs as much as a 2009-2015 model (Gen 3). They all burn a little oil between changes, it's normal. The rings are low tension for increased fuel efficiency. If the seller has had the battery reconditioned, still allow for a new replacement on the 06...recon only lasts a little while before you're in strife again.

B mode is often misunderstood. HSD always regenerates as much energy as possible, even in D. When system decides there's certain empty capacity in the battery, B can increase charging current comparing to D mode which then regenerates more energy than in D. As a result B slows down the car more rapidly when "gas" pedal is released, but technically it is accomplished exactly the same way - by increasing the charging current - as driving in D and gently applying regenerative brakes. But primarily B mode alows ICE to be used for engine braking (means it regenerates less energy) if regenerative braking isn't possible (full battery) or in such cases as long downhills to help the braking system = allows regenerative braking for longer period and/or reduces friction brakes warming/wear.

I have a feeling that the concept of choice must be absolutely alien to Americans. So many complain that the interior of cars like the Prius, Tesla, ID3, i3 and similar are cheap if the car costs a bit more. You got the choice to buy eather a car with a cheap and bad drive train but a well made interior, like an BMW 2, Merceds C, Ford Mondeo, or a car with a high developed interesting drive train but cheap interior, like this car here. That is why choice means, not "which logo I get on my car".

I live in a city so I’m often squeezing through tight spots which very few other cars could pass through. Super handy! Happened to me this morning. Let’s design a car as ugly as possible and make it very slow, boring and uninteresting to drive then target people who thinks eating bacon is destroying the planet. - Toyota design philosophy

Yuck!! It is utterly hideous, I truly cannot stand Toyota and would never buy one. Bring the Peugeot hybrids here and price them right, I want a 508 GT Hybrid.. superb car!!
