In this Carsguide comparison test we’re weighing up whether you should go for a regular hybrid or a plug-in hybrid - and to do so, we’ve got the nation’s most popular SUV, the Toyota RAV4, up against a newcomer - the MG HS PHEV.
The Chinese-made MG HS Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is arguably more technologically advanced than our reigning Car of the Year, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid - but is it the one you should buy?
In this test the Toyota RAV4 we have is the Cruiser hybrid all-wheel drive, which has not only impressed us, but is arguably the most in demand family car in Australia with long wait times and a lot of driveway cred.
Up against it in this test is the all-new MG HS PHEV, which pushes the hybrid petrol-electric envelope even further than its rival. It has good looks, a technologically advanced powertrain and a pretty clever interior, too.
Both of these SUVs combine petrol and electric driving, and both are priced almost identically to each other. And with no plug-in RAV4 Prime available here, we had to figure out whether you go plug-free with an older favourite, or is the best choice to plug-in to a newcomer?
