A very nice, clean build-out! What puzzles me is that truck-owners who want a build-out often get cab-high shells which gives you essentially no living space at all. All the companies that make shells have models that are about 6" higher ... like my SnugTop Hi-Liner.
@delkelso

valid point, but if you are a paddler, the cab height shell makes it much easier to load and tie down boats on top.

Regarding the removable long piece, consider dividing it into 2 or 3 pieces so the owner has the option to only open up a section. Plus it would be easier to do without needing to exit the vehicle in case of heavy rain. In addition, one of the pieces could be used as a small table top that attaches to the shelf since the owner would be in a sitting position anyway.
@nosnerd1967

that would be a great idea

Was also thinking that the removable piece could be used as an angled bench seat back with double layers of foam mattress cusions. When you want the full size bed, just move the bench seat back over into that position and reposition the 3 sections of mattress cusions.

As a woodworker myself, and soon to be nomad, I'm curious what type of finish you apply to your projects, including edges of plywood, to ensure longevity of the end product. Do you round-over to ease wear & tear, or are these builds understood to be light use/temporary/occasional use? I'm currently struggling with NOT applying a polyurethane to the wood frame & panel elements in my vehicle (meant for ling term use), knowing that I'll be sleeping in the enclosed space - but also concerned about exposure to weather (mostly rain) when doors or rear hatch are open (SUV, in my case). Do you leave this entirely up to the customer to request, or do you suggest something? For the horizontal surfaces of my build, I've applied a marine grade vinyl with 3M 77 adhesive, with some area reserved for fridge & misc. gear covered with removable rubber matting. I've been trying to get rid of the rubber smell of the matting by scrubbing with Simple Green, and power washing, but after two cycles I still smell the rubber. Do you do builds that are intended for rugged, long term use? If so, what materials & finishes do you swear by?
@SolidWoodWorx
4 жыл бұрын
Hey there thanks for the question, I mostly leave the finishing up to the customers because It saves them money and they can pick exactly what color they want. But yes it does help to clear coat any wood coming into contact with moisture.
