The 1980 1st Conference was memorable for the introduction of the 3-point line and the mid-conference trade with Crispa/Walk Tall that sent Adornado to U/Tex which led to this. The handicap that is 1 import a time carried on for Toyota and Walk Tall, Great Taste dominated the 1st half of the elimination round with the import tandem of Jim Hearns and Lew Brown and the acquisition of Estoy Estrada. However, they regressed later and both Toyota and Walk Tall occupied the top spots as usual with Great Taste and U/Tex notching the last 2 semis slots. Toyota and Walk Tall continued pace beginning the semis at 2-0. Great Taste though continued their downfall, not winning a game in the semis. U/Tex however surged winning the last 4 games and got the 1st Finals slot thanks to the quotient system. Toyota and Walk Tall ending at a similar 4-2 engaged in a tight sudden-death match with Toyota winning I believe by just 2 points. Finals went an interesting trend, U/Tex winning Games 1 and 3, while Toyota winning 2 and 4. Game 4 though was controversial as Manotoc took out his starters with deficit still within reach, and coined the phrase 1 step backward 2 steps forward. Alas went to this historic game that Toyota just blew away, and the curse of 1980 plagued them with 2nd place finishes also in the 2nd (Invitational) and 3rd (All-Filipino) conferences.

Glenn MacDonald was a championship caliber player. Having won rings with the Boston Celtics before, he brought his winning ways to U-Tex. On Toyota's side though it's loss affected coach and former player Fort Acuña so much that he took his own life before the 1981 season started.

This was when the game was played by real tough guys. No prima donnas, no softies, no harm no foul! The great Bogs Adornado, still deadly despite his injury from previous seasons! The great Don Ramon Fernandez bringing the ball from backcourt to frontcourt and assisting the late great Arnie Tuadles! The great Living Legend Sonny Jaworski hitting those three-pointers! The late great Lim Eng Beng foul-baiting to the max! The great Abe King and the great Francis Arnaiz! Nagpapakamatay sa bola mga players, absorbing elbows, knees, shoulders, feet (there was even a foul called on a headbutt!) Walang maseselan, lahat lumalaban!

Despite the dominance of Crispa and Toyota during the early years of the PBA, teams like Utex, Yco Tanduay, Great Taste and even San Miguel have won PBA championships just shows you the parity and balance of PBA of the old unlike today's PBA which is dominated by 2 groups that has sister teams. Just glanced at the first 5 minutes of this gamr. Didn't know that there was no corner 3's in the PBA in the past. And it seems the other team had 2 imports while the other team only had 1? Was that really a rule? Not fair to the other team, if it was. Or was it just the team's option to only have 1? Imports also look taller, or maybe the PBA players were just a lot shorter.

As a Toyota fan, this is painful to watch. My instinct is to blame tuadles but now I think it's his teammates fault for not rushing to tuadles' aid so he wouldn't have to make such a long pass.

The time out cost them. It was only while watching this video that I realized it. Check the inbound after the deficit was cut to two, arnaiz cleanly received the inbound and everyone was still playing. Then the horn sounded nullifying the inbound. Had there been no time-out Utex would be forced to foul arnaiz, who was already making a bee line to half court and he was Toyota's best ft shooter at that time. But we can't change the past. Good game though. This was a classic, too bad it came at Toyota's expense.
