I am surfskate.
I started surfing and skateboarding at 8 years of age in 1973 and never stopped. Surfers always said I surf like a skater. Skates always said I skate like a surfer. I just called myself surf/skate. I have always wanted to blend the two disciplines in the way I performed in both sports. I have always been an outsider because of this but still embraced it.
My first video ever released in 1986 was entitled Surf/Skate. It was half surfing and half skateboarding.
Now there is an actual surfskate movement! I think thats really cool but 95% of the people I see doing it online have horrible style. Surfskate for me is not about the maneuver, but about the flow and body position mixed with the carve. "Who feels it knows it."
This is my first time riding an actual surfskate. It's the Santa Cruz X Carver Screaming Hand check cruzer with Carver c5 trucks and Santa Cruz 78a wheels. It feels amazing, although I am not used to it yet, and rode it on some very rough streets here in the Dominican Republic. Looking forward to getting into this.
Pretty classic, the Screaming Hand logo by Jim Phillips, which has become an iconic worldwide phenomenon, was initially used for my video "Speed Freaks" for Santa Cruz Speed Wheels.
Also did some "Steez Masters", a tribute to some of my favorite styles in surfing: Laird Hamilton, Tom Curren, Brad Gerlach, Jay Adams, Adam Replogle, Derek Ho and Mark Richards.
Let me know in the comments if you want to see more of this!
