I did forget to mention one thing in the video. In order to have the release work in a song, you need to use one of the "release" commands instead of the "off" command. These are normally mapped to the tilde (~) and equals (=) keys. There is a difference between the two versions, but since it has to do with FM stuff, I'll cover that in a different video. Additionally, I didn't know that you can add a release to the sequence macro by simply shift-clicking the bar. Thank you to Mahbod for letting me know!

2 years ago I watched a video on Mario Kart 8 that got me obsessed with VGM and music production and here I am today in a weird subcommunity in production and audio design that is so goddamn cool that I'm trying to learn how to use Furnace at 1 AM. Circumstances of chance brought me here over time...or maybe it was destiny. This tutorial is great, thank you.

You're welcome! I can definitely relate! I can't remember quite what got me into chiptune, but I've been making music for game hardware as far back as 2016. Granted, I wasn't very good at the time, but I definitely have some experience under my belt :D

I admit this lacks cohesive script and presentation, but it was still a very informative tutorial that explained just enough about those scary PSG sliders to get me started. Then again, "impromptu" is in the name, heh. I'd say keep these up, I would love to hear in particular about FM in the same fashion! Not a lot of tutorials on that topic.

I'm glad you found it helpful! Yeah, I intentionally don't make a script for these. When I have in the past, I tended to focus too much on following the script rather than actually teaching anything. I do plan to make more of these; however, I do have a lot of things going on right now, so it might be a little while before another one comes out.

Thanks so much for making this, I am so looking forward to getting used to the software and maybe in the future gain the ability to command the YM2612/SN76489 inside the Mega Drive instead of just simulating it in the DAW! I found it difficult with Deflemask on the iPad without a typing or musical keyboard.

I have a problem with the OKI M6295. I am not sure how to say this, but when I play a note on one of the samples, it keeps going to the lowest note possible. Am I doing something wrong, or what is causing that?
@SpinningSquareWaves
11 ай бұрын
The OKI MSM6295 is actually a relatively simple chip. While it can produce samples, it can only play them back at one frequency. You can work around this by having multiple samples that play back your instrument at different pitches, or by just using a different chip for samples, such as the Konami K056320
@JackTheGamer3
3 ай бұрын
@@SpinningSquareWavesSo you can only play the sample at one pitch?
@SpinningSquareWaves
3 ай бұрын
@@JackTheGamer3 Yes, as that's a limitation of the OKI MSM6295. You can resample the sample to be a different pitch though, you'd just need a separate sample for each new pitch. Or, you could just use a different chip that can playback at different pitches. Most chips can do this

Out of curiosity, how did you add instrument editor to your workspace?
@SpinningSquareWaves
Жыл бұрын
I think there is a setting that needs to be toggled in the configuration menu, but after doing so, it allows you to dock any editor as you can for all other windows. I think it was called "Allow docking editors," or something like that

I think it might be called "Advanced mode" now because that was the only setting I could find that did the job. Thanks for your help!

@@SpinningSquareWaves These two videos you uploaded have been extremely helpful for onboarding to trackers. I'm really looking forward to your next uploads. Do you have any other channels or resources you think would be helpful for someone learning Furnace Tracker or trackers in general?
@SpinningSquareWaves
Жыл бұрын
@@brianjosephromano It really depends on what you're wanting to do, but generally, I would recommend looking up tutorials for Deflemask. Furnace was originally designed around Deflemask support, so many of the resources for that program also apply to Furnace. If you're wanting to get into FM synthesis, I'd recommend watching ANDREW HUANG's 4 minute video on it. He does an excellent job explaining the basics of how it works. On a similar note, I would recommend Posy's video on sine waves since it gives a unique perspective on what sound is. Incidentally, it also explains the concept of additive synthesis very well. Are there any specific things you're wanting to learn about?

Maybe you could help me get started with the SNES chip. I can't seem to get any sound out of it. I've tried playing around with the "ins. editor > wavetable" and "ins. > macros" tabs and I've tried enabling the synthesizer in the "ins. editor > SNES" tab but nothing seems to work. Of course, I can create waveforms in the wavetable editor and play them directly from the keyboard, but I can't get the instrument itself to sound off when programmed into the pattern editor or even when played directly from the keyboard. Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. Steps below. In the instruments tab press the plus icon to create an instrument. In the wavetables tab click the plus icon to create a waveform. In the wavetable editor tab, draw in the editor space to change the waveform to your liking (or expand the right panel, select a waveform preset, and manipulate its characteristics with the slider). In the ins. editor tab navigate to the sample tab and tick the box that says "Use wavetable (Amiga/SNES/Generic DAC only)". Program notes into any channel in the pattern editor. For bonus points create several waveforms in the wavetables tab (make sure they're all unique by editing them in the wavetable editor tab), then in the ins. editor tab navigate to the waveform section of the macros. Increase the length to a reasonable value (say 15) and draw waveform change events in the automation panel that correspond to the waveforms you created. The result is that a single instrument playing a single note will cycle its voice through multiple waveforms.

I’m glad you were able to figure it out! Keep in mind that the SNES was meant for sample playback. Furnace’s wavetable support is just an extension of that. If you want to use original SNES samples look for BRR samples online. Bonus! You can also use the wavetable synthesizer if you want to make wavetable sounds that change over time without making a bunch of individual waveforms

So much for creating just the chip tune style? Very nice but it doesn't work for me since a real tracker doesn't focus on just one style, it practically covers all of them.-
@SpinningSquareWaves
3 күн бұрын
If all you want is the chiptune “style,” I wouldn’t recommend Furnace. The whole point of Furnace and trackers like it is to make accurate chiptune that works on real hardware, which it does exceptionally well. Furnace can do many styles and genres of music, but if you don’t care about hardware accuracy, there’s no reason to not use a modern DAW, like FL Studio or LMMS. Or, if you want to keep the tracker format, Renoise or OpenMPT would be good alternatives.

Жыл бұрын
@@satl374 There are two main versions of Furnace: a stable version and a development version. As the names imply, the dev version has more features, but the stable version should have less bugs. To get the stable version, go to the Releases tab on the Github page and simply download the latest release for your operating system. To get the dev version, the easiest way is to go to the Actions tab and then download the latest build of the master branch. You can also build from source, but that's much more complicated.
