They sell the correct reducer and hardener right next to that paint at tractor supply

Yes, for an additional $40 you can buy the "correct" stuff. The painters solvent is 1/4 the price. Much more budget friendly, and it works great for old equipment when you just need to keep the rust at bay.

@@Theweldingmillennial well here in utah it's $12 and the hardener is $19 still under $100 for a paint job. Not worth the headache of making it "work" if it's not gonna come out perfect and stress free it's not worth doing

Oil based enanle paints have a cure time of several days before they set up an get hard. At least they did in the late 70's, when I painted a car with my dad supervising. The paint now with the hardener (catalist) have a short drying an curing time. But the enamle is easier to work with an much more forgiving. You can take your time without being rushed. It drys slower Just make sure when you lay down a coat overlap the passes an try to keep the edges wet.

Yes, flash time, drying time, and cure time are all different. Each paint system has matched set of reducers and catalyst. This was the first time using the “painter solvent”. It worked better than I expected and the supplies for this paint job were about $50.

Use acetone to mix the paint ! About 40 percent acetone, 60 percent paint, 1 oz of hardener

I’m not a fan of straight acetone to thin paint. It will flash off too fast in most cases and is not recommended for this type of paint system. I would only use it in extremely cold conditions if I had no other options. Plus I try and save the acetone for cleaning fiberglass and using it to prep aluminum for welding. I can’t do either of those jobs with any other chemicals I have easy access to. Your results may vary.
