Everything about this song is perfect - besides being relatable. The melody, the lyrics, her delivery, all of it. You feel the hope she has in a miserable situation, but by the end of the song, you feel her strength, because she is the one who got herself out. The other person just had a fast car, but the narrator had the drive.

I was in the Army at age 18. My basic training drill sergeant had preyed on half of our platoon. 27 out of 60 women testified against him later. I had moved on to Monterey California to language school and I started to melt down. Self loathing, PTSD, partying too much, and just lost. The first time I heard this song was as I rode in my friend's Trans Am up Hwy 1 at night driving up to San Francisco. The windows wide open. Me wishing I could fly away. The song reminding me that I could maybe still be someone.

She just told my life story from my youth I couldn't wait to get out of my alcoholic home, absent mom, and oppressive town. Really hit me harder today than it did in the 90s. As I reflect on it, this song may have subliminally influenced some of my choices to get out. I just didn't know how, but managed to eventually, only to go back to it and get out again. I remember when this song first came out. We went to Rosemont, IL to see Peter Frampton and Tracy Chapman was back-up. When she sang this song, the entire crowd stood up and cheered her as she sang 'so I quit school and that's what I did". She had kept her head down playing the entire concert, then she looked up, in shock. She couldn't believe she had the support of everyone in the audience. It was beautiful. Then the crowd sang the rest of the song with her and swayed. Gorgeous.

Such a raw song from guitar, vocals, mood. Incredible piece of art. I don't know who has been around long enough in the human experience to not understand how powerful of a song it is. The thing about great art is how to relates to the people..... That's why it's so good.

Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to a morning in May, 1988. My wife of 15 years had just told me the night before that she was leaving me for someone I had considered a friend. I was devastated; only got about 15 minutes sleep, and went to another friend, who was willing to listen to my troubles. This song was playing on the radio and spoke to me of troubled times. Still does!

I can actually remember when this song came out, and I'm sure my mouth hung open. I'm listening to it here now almost 40 years later and tears are streaming down my face. Not only is it a complete work of art by a beautiful person, but it hits so close to home for me and many others I'm sure. I had a very poor, abused childhood, I mean really bad, and I remember as I got a little older wanting to escape, but not having the tools necessary to do that for a long long time. I wasn't all that smart, wasn't good looking, had no money, had a handicap that was visible, and was mocked and bullied severely at home and in school. I remember at one point when I was like 18 buying a pair of fake glasses and a tie for a couple of bucks so that people would think I was smart, and I wanted to feel like "I could be someone...." There were years of living with no car or junk cars and renting rooms in bad neighborhoods and working very low paying jobs. This song represents better than any other the story of how people want to become more than their present circumstances. Yes it is sad but it is also hopeful. Wonderful analysis you did of this song that I consider one of the greatest singer-songwriter tunes ever written. I'm so glad that it was recently featured and revived revived at the Grammys, to show it to a new generation. 👍👍❤️

Tracy is a treasure. And as far as your comment about the people with the least having the most sense, you're right. They have to to survive, they don't have the luxury of ignorance. I was too young when it first came out, but I heard it a couple of years after high school (1996) at the beach house my friends and I rented. I immediately loved it. What it means to me is hope, freedom, and never giving up. Sometimes you need to get the F out of somewhere and start over. Your statement is spot on people who live from day to day to survive and struggle to pay bills , mortgages , rent , car payments , food on the table and then try to raise their kids sometimes in a bad environment without common sense they wouldn't last a week. Wealthy people dont depend on common sense because most of their mistakes dont have consequences like us normal folk. The rich just throw money at their problems the poor havent got that liberty unfortunately. An amazing song by an amazing woman the talent just oozes out of her. You can feel every emotion in her voice. Top reaction as always and never edit something you mean my friend. Slainte from ireland.
